...Title of the thesis: From ‘The Cosby Show’ to ‘Blackish’: Cultural Analysis comparing gender roles. By: Dominique Hoskins Shorter University Statement of the problem: This study needs to be conducted because over past years throughout television, there have not been enough representations of wealthy African-American families being portrayed. Many shows like My Wife & Kids have tried to carry out with their own originality. So far none have been able to connect with audience in an influential way as The Cosby Show. Lit Review: Slide one: * Tannen (2010) mentions that both masculine and feminine conversational styles are equally valid; her use of the term genderlect reflects this idea. * Describing them as masculine and feminine styles presents them as two distinct cultural dialects rather than as inferior or superior ways of speaking also * Tannen (2010) identifies that each gender uses its own distinctive language codes to draw different inferences from the same message. Slide two: Studies using Genderlect Styles Purpose (importance) of the study: The purpose of this study will be to discover the progress of wealthy educated African-American families portrayed on television. ...America Good Times originally aired on CBS in 1974. It was a black situation comedy focused on the daily lives, struggles, and hardships of a disadvantaged black family living in a Chicago housing project during the peak of the civil rights movement. Esther Rolle was cast as the matriarch, Florida Evans. The character had originated as a maid on the sitcom “Maude”. From analysis of the main characters in Good Times, there emerges a clearly exhibited grouping of a minstrel show ensemble. Every minstrel caricature is represented; the mammy, the brute, the promiscuous, exotic woman, the lazy son, the ‘mulatto’, and the pickaninny. There are no legitimate marked talents portrayed among the characters, except for J.J., whose inability to be taken seriously enough undermines any effort to benefit from his artistic talents. As Bodroghkozy (2012) observes, “Good Times waded into these troubled waters. As a comedy reaching a diverse audience, the show had to negotiate its representations with care in order, on the one hand, to circulate empowering messages about African Americans while, on the other hand, not to unduly discomfort more conservative white viewers, including those who might have seen the ethnic whites of Chicago and Boston as victims in the era’s racial turmoil. Good Times quickly developed into an important site of contestation and struggle over questions of “blackness,” the black family, ...

The paper will specifically focus on the research studies for the Neilsen Ratings System. The goal of the paper is to explore these issues, incorporate the ideas and practices of the Neilsen Rating Systems and discuss the pros and cons of this research giant. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Neilsen Rating System The Neilsen Ratings System began as a radio rating system by Arthur Neilsen. The Neilsen Rating System evolved to eventually analyze television data. In 1950, Nielsen moved to television, developing a ratings system using the methods he and his company had developed for radio (Levin, 2006). That method has since become the primary source of audience measurement information in the television industry around the globe. Measuring Ratings The Neilsen Rating system is characterized as a syndicated data provider. A syndicated data provider tracks the change of one or more measures over time, usually in a given industry (Cooper, 2006). Neilsen Rating system makes a very lucrative business for the data that is presented to the entertainment industry, most importantly television. The primary system of measuring data for the Neilsen Rating system is by gathering data and the industry...

...Movin’ On Up: Have Black Sitcoms Really Changed the Black Community for the Better? Through time, blacks in television have been able to abolish many of the pervious stereotypes from past generations. However as media progresses and blacks are becoming a more predominate part of American television, the effect of black sitcoms is being called into question when it comes to their effect on the black community. The early 70’s through the 90’s were the golden age for black sitcoms, both the good and the bad. Blacks were still portrayed as both ignorant, poor, mammy and uncle type characters in shows such as Good Times, Stanford and Son, and more recently, Tyler Perry’s house of Payne. However, many shows promoted the educated, independent, affluent black family such as The Cosby Show, The Jefferson’s, and A Different World. Do these shows truly have an effect on the black community, and even more importantly do they effect how the rest of America views them? For blacks portrayal on television perception is reality, many preconceived notions of how blacks act and carry themselves in everyday life have been eliminated, nevertheless, black sitcoms still reinforce stereotypes that have plagued the black community since the beginning of slavery. Background: * “From Mammy to Miss America and Beyond: Cultural Images and the Shaping of U.S. Social Policy:” A brief summery of the history of blacks on television and how this has effected the community in general. * In “Television...

...Laquita Easter 5/8/11 The Cosby Show was a great show for African Americans in the early 80’s. I love one particular character from the show it was “Clif Huxtable” played by comedian Bill Cosby. The show most people thought it was not “real” enough. The reason most people will think this is because of “Cosby” family life on the show. Cliff and his wife Claire Huxtable were very successful, educated people. Cliff was a doctor and his wife was a successful lawyer. The two raised 5 children who needed much guidance and advice as any children would. The show was very interesting and funny but was the joke on how the whole series was played out? I don’t believe so, that made me adore and look up to Cliff Huxtable. He was fair, down to earth, and made his fatherly love & support for his children to broaden and make them choose for themselves. Bill Cosby character was the father of all fathers; he supported his wife and watch football on Sunday nights. He was still the all American dad, in one if my favorite episodes, it was when Theo wanted to stay out later. Theo: Dad, will it be too much to ask if U stay 30 minutes after curfew? Cliff: Well, Theo if I let you stay 30 minutes after your curfew, then you may ask for an increase in your allowance, and then you’ll want to borrow the car. Theo: Okay Dad, would a “no Theo” be too much to ask? I loved that episode and even use some of Cliff’s parenting when dealing with my own children situation. Bill Cosby always seen himself as the...
