Cosmo Argument

Explain the cosmological argument with particular reference to:
The rejection to infinite regress and god as the necessary being (30 Marks)
The Cosmological Argument is a posteriori argument put forward by St. Thomas Aquinas. Gottfried Leibnitz also made a similar argument. In the Cosmological Argument, Aquinas said that he believed that all things in the world were caused to exist by something. The universe exists, so there must be something that caused the universe. He believed the first cause to be God. He said that God is the only thing that was not caused by something else.
The argument seeks to prove the existence of God from looking at the world we live in and the universe as a whole. The whole theory is based on cause and effect (when one event causes another to happen, the cause is why it happens and the effect is what happens.)
Aristotle believed that all movement depends on there being a mover, and there has to be something that originates this. The universe follows this principle so needs a mover – this is the prime mover. The mover caused everything to come into existence, however, needs nothing to cause it and so must be exempt from the laws of nature.
Thomas Aquinas created five ways to prove the existence of God, the first proof is based on motion, It can be noted that some things in the universe are in motion and it follows that whatever is in the state of motion must have been placed in motion by another such act, and things achieve their potential through an external force. In order for something to change it requires actuality and this cannot go on for infinity so there must be a starting point – this is God.
The second way is based on a series of cause and effects in the universe, this proof rejected the theory of infinite causes, saying there has to be something that started everything off. There is a cause for all things, for example

Multiverse ♥

...Maybe In Another Universe, I Deserve You Gaby Dunn What if, in another universe, I deserve you? Hear me out. There’s this philosopher from the 1890s named William James, and he coined this theory about “the multiverse” which suggests that a hypothetical set of multiple universes comprises everything that can possibly exist simultaneously. Are you following? The entirety of space, time, matter and energy is all happening at once in different timelines: It’s the idea of parallel universes. Right? So okay, let’s presume the multiverse is real. Well then, maybe somewhere in those infinite universes is one, or several, where I deserve you. Maybe there’s a universe out there — happening now — where we end up together and when I close my eyes at night, I’m not dreaming the way a normal person would. Instead I’m seeing flashes of our lives in the multiverse. They’re not simple dreams because I miss you, right? They’re scientific, anachronistic visions. For instance: In this universe, I don’t want a family, but maybe in another, I’m more of the type to settle down. Maybe there’s a universe where you hold my hand while I give birth to our daughter in a white hospital room with pink flowers and fuzzy teddy bears on the window sill. Where we take family vacations and pose for dorky pictures in our neon bathing suits on the sands of a Florida beach. Where we curl up to watch a cheesy movie at the end of a long day in our big, green, suburban house once the kids have fallen asleep...

A Story

...Weekly Writing Seven It was an abnormally cold day in Baghdad, when I got my first chance to ride a Blackhawk helicopter. I woke up at 0500, began getting dressed and grabbing all the gear I would need for the flight. When I got to the tarmac the pilot was already starting his pre-flight briefs. The pilot told us it was just a routine flight over downtown Baghdad, and everything should be just fun, but Intel said there had been a recent rise in hostile activity in the area, so we should be on our guard. We began boarding the Blackhawk and getting all of our gear strapped down and the Machine Gunners began doing weapons checks on their M240Bs. When we took off from BIAP everything was going according to plan, the helicopter was operating perfectly. It wasn’t until 20 or so minutes into the flight that I would realize the true purpose of the flight was. We were given the brief that the mission was just a typical fly over for surveillance on a market in Baghdad, but after a while I noticed we were nowhere near the particular market. The Blackhawk slowed down to a halt over a small building and I could hear the pilot barking orders at the two men sitting up front but couldn’t make out what he was saying. The two men began unstrapping themselves and hooking up rappel ropes to the outside edge of the floor. I began hearing gunfire and realized we were taking small arms fire to the right side of the helicopter. The right side gunner began returning fire, I looked out the window and...

Mister Robertson

...waved goodbye to my friends as I stepped off the bus and headed to my house. I was super excited to get home and see my parents. They hadn’t talked much at all yesterday. As a matter of fact they just stayed in their bedroom all day. They haven’t been feeling well. I ran up the stairs of the front porch and swung the front door open with a big, cheesy grin on my face; However, when I opened the door there was no one in the den. The television was off and the house seemed to be abnormally quiet. I took a step in and started calling out. “Mom? Dad?” I called. I knew they were supposed to be here. Dad had the day off and mom didn’t have any plans with her girlfriend’s until next week, right? I placed my backpack on the ground next to the couch and walked into the kitchen to check the calendar. October fifth. I was right. Dad took this day off so him, mom, and I could go see a movie together. “They’ve got to be here somewhere”, I thought myself. Then it hit me. School let out early today because of a busted water pipe. I looked at the watch on my wrist. “It’s only twelve o’ clock. They may still be sleeping.” I headed back through the den and slowly opened their bedroom door. Surely enough, there they lie. A sigh of relief escaped my mouth and my grin returned. I tiptoed over to my mom’s side of the bed and pulled the covers back. I was greeted with the same sight as the day before. She lay there motionless, eyes glazed over, mouth agate. Her skin was a pale white and her hair...

Broke

...One of the most eye-opening movies I have seen in a while is the 30:30 film by ESPN called Broke. In the movie Broke, former athletes from all of the major sports leagues are interviewed and give their real life stories on how things were when they were pro athletes and how it is harder than it seems to hold on to the millions of dollars that they make in their careers. I for one knew that many players went broke fast, but I honestly had no idea how they did that until this film. To be honest it always made me somewhat mad that all my favorite athletes were in the tabloids all the time because they let all that money gets away from them. Little did I know, outside influences were taking everything away from them. It is important to express my overall reaction and also talk about something that really shocked me. First of all, after the film ended I had an instant reaction and opinion on the film and it’s subjects. I really felt for the former players who were thrown into this world of big money, fast cars, and women. There were so many influences that affected the way they spent their cash. For example, these guys are thrown into this world as 18-21 year olds that many had never even cashed a check before. Before they even get that first check people are trying to take advantage of that, as agents and bad parents look out for their own interests. These agents take a big piece of the pie, and sometimes cycle money into personal investments without these young men knowing it....

Vast Hell

...Vast Hell “A small town is a vast hell” The quote above describes how badly some people perceive small towns. There could be many reasons behind this strong dislike. One of them could be that small towns are often seen as these tight and small communities where everybody know each other in one way or another and are noisy with too much time on their hands, which resolves in gossip spreading out quickly in town when something happens. But what do you do when you try to move past the gossip, and stumble upon the ugly truth? We see this in the novel “Vast Hell” by author Guillermo Martinez, where the quote is also from. The story takes place in a small village, and resolves around a man that thinks back to the arrival of a nameless young boy in the small-town, that manages to become the talk of town, when rumour starts spreading that he is romantically involved with the wife of one of the two barbers in town, who people call “the French Woman” for unknown reasons. Fuel is added to the fire when the boy and the French Woman disappear, leading half the town to believe they ran off together and the other half to believe that the barber somehow did away with them. Further investigation into the case gives the story a whole different turn, because after digging in the ground to see if the barber had buried them there, they do find dead bodies, but not the bodies of the boy and the French woman, but of a lot of unknown people. The story is told with a first person narrator...

Seinfeld: the Untold Story

...SEINFELD: THE UNTOLD STORY Throughout Seinfeld’s eight-season stint on network television the show and its creator’s have stereotyped everything from young Puerto Rican boys to Jewish Priests. The main stereotype of this sit-com is the very florid portrayal of the generational age groups of the characters. The main characters represent the beginning of the Generation X culture. The parents and relatives of Jerry Seinfeld and that of George Costanza present the presence of the members of the Silent or GI generation. Throughout the television series we have seen the elderly as stereotypically helpless individuals with little or no purpose. The character’s Jerry Seinfeld, George Costanza, Elaine Benes, and Cosmo Kramer, represent the Generation X culture. These half-witted characters are often unreliable and uncaring about the society they live in. These characters often care about nothing more about life outside their own. The stereotype of these characters and the success of this very popular television show have contributed to the media’s wide usage of stereotyping generations. The article, “My Inner Shrimp,” can be directly correlated to George’s eccentric ego trips with his problems with shortness, unemployment, and baldness. George’s character is often portrayed as a very loud, very rambunctious person who is often seeking to be on top. Elderly: Helpless or Not Throughout the series we have seen the elderly characters of Seinfeld often being absent minded, senile...

Analysis of "The Red Lin"

...The Red line Analysis The short story takes place in London. We know this because the different sections in the story are named after subway stations in London; another way we can tell is the characters statements about the city: “Cathy had been at work, so the boyfriend had shown him around London” (p. 64, l. 25 - 26). The story unfolds in the subway’s underground system of London in the late 19’hundreds but could as well be set as today, because the way our characters describe their surroundings: “You couldn’t walk, always it had to be busses and what the English called the tubes” (p. 64, l. 29-30). Here we get an impression of a modern city where everything has to be fast and there is no time to waste. All of the main characters meet in the underground system at the end of the story. All the characters are placed here and throughout the story we hear their individual stories and get an impression of how they are and how their personalities are, these flashbacks and changes between the different characters can make it confusing at the beginning of the story, but at the end it makes good sense. This is a post modernistic narrative technique, and it is used because we have to hear the story from everyone’s point of view, to understand what is going on. I think the narrator has chosen the city of London because it’s a modern world city where everything has to go fast and it’s easy to get confused like Berto got. The title is called The Red Line. I think the narrator probably...

Determining the Percentage of Oxygen in Air

...Before the “Determining the Percentage of Oxygen in Air” lab, the students were to read the background and purpose information on the lab. The experiment was designed to determine the percentage of oxygen in a given air sample. The purpose of this lab, although, was to teach students to be familiar with laboratory procedures and safety. On the day of the lab, Mrs. Robinson spoke to the entire class on how to do the experiment and the materials that we needed. We then proceeded to put on our safety aprons and goggles. My partner, Wyatt, and I gathered the materials of a 100mL graduated cylinder (with a 0.1 accuracy), a pie tin, a small candle, and a lighter. We needed to be incredibly safe with the lighter. The only chemical is water. When we first got our pie tin, I noticed there was some wax already on the bottom meaning that it was already used. We had trouble getting the candle to stick to the pie tin, but we did and we filled the rest of the pie tin with water. When we lit the candle I could smell the fire. The graduated cylinder was placed over the candle and the flame started to die down and I could see smoke in the rest of the cylinder. As the flame died, the water around the candle started to rise. When the flame did eventually die, the water vacuumed up at a faster rate. The same results followed with other trials only with different readings. Although I noticed that if the wick of the candle was wet, it crackled before lighting. This phenomenon occurs because...

Cuba Narrative

...Yordani is a Cuban resident that came to United States exactly one week ago. I have been informed that in order for a Cuban citizen to obtain a visa or permission to leave the country, a person from a foreign country has to invite the individual to visit him/her; in this case the foreign country is United States. Apparently, everything was ready for Yordani and his wife to travel to U. S., the only thing they were waiting for was the airplane tickets, but they were told that someone had already bought them, so they were okay. The day of the trip arrived and the tickets were nowhere to be found. Yordani and his wife had to sell some of their own things in order for them to buy the tickets because now, another problem had arisen. If they do not leave the county using the visa, they will never have the opportunity to obtain another visa again, so they had to sell many of their own things (TV, bicycle, etc.) in order to get the money to buy the tickets. The issue here is not the tickets, the issue here is that the person who invited them, (Peter), at the last minute, decided not to buy their tickets anymore because he had made alternate plans. Yordani knew my father because my father had visited Cuba several years before. Yordani called and explained a little bit of what was happening and my father told him that he was welcome to come and stay with us. When they arrived here, they explained more in detail what had happened. While they explained the story, they were crying...
