...6 December 2011 Radical Couch Potato. The concept of being radical conjoins up images of out of control extremists seeking to institute drastic change and forcing it upon everyone. The thought of doing nothing also has radical implications. Dose placing the extremist next to the couch potato present an easy contrast to examine or do they share more in common than we would anticipate? It’s hard to determine which course, action or lack of action, is the scariest. The wearing blinders approach is a contributing factor to many social problems that we all face. Our acceptance of these views makes us equal to the ones presenting them. We witness the viewpoints of radicals every day in the news media. They draw the major attention and focus due to the fact they prey upon the emotions and fears of ordinary people. Groups and individuals expressing extreme beliefs sometimes seek a response that may be violent, and that scares us most of the time. That’s why being bystanders produces no action or outcome, which is considered radical, unlike the activist who displays their agenda openly. The media allows these far reaching actions and ideas to consume our narrow view of our world. By taking little or no action against the militants who seek to control the destiny of the majority we become the militant through our inaction. The political process produces differing opinions, which many are considered deep-rooted in their parties. The extreme right verse...

...Twenty years earlier, he explains, he and his friend had dinner at a restaurant called "Big Joe" Brady's, which used to be located where the hardware store stands. The officer confirms that this was the site of the restaurant up until five years earlier, when it was torn down. At the time of their last meal together, the man continues, he was eighteen years old and his friend Jimmy was twenty. The two had grown up together and were the closest of friends, but the man was leaving the next morning to go out to the West to find his fortune, and Jimmy was the type of person who would never leave New York. After eating their dinner that night, they agreed that no matter where they were or what they were doing, they would both do all they could to return to that same spot at that exact same time, ten o'clock, exactly twenty years later. The officer expresses interest, asking why they had been in contact so seldom over the past twenty years. The man briefly explains that he has been busy in the West trying to make his fortune. He checks the time on his watch, which is adorned with diamonds, indicating that he has been successful in his business endeavors. The time is three minutes before ten o'clock, the precise moment that they are scheduled to meet. The officer stays a few minutes more, and it is after ten o'clock when he says goodbye and leaves. The man waits twenty minutes more. Finally, another man approaches, bundled up against the light rain that has started to fall. The...

...Aussie Band Jakubi Premiers 1st Music Video Couch Potato There must be something in the water down under, because we've seen wave after wave of talented new artists emerging from Australia lately. Jakubi is an Aussie bred 5-piece band that has the ability to create infectious 'pop-spinned' r&b jams. They've set their sights on the U.S. for their first tour, and released their very first music video, 'Couch Potato' three days ago to preview their upcoming EP, Can't Afford It All. 'Couch Potato' blends electronic soul with bright visuals for their first video, indicative of their sunny subversive-funk sound. The idea of the video is simple enough. A lazy, beautiful girl lounging on a couch floats through a sunny neighborhood, eventually attracting...

...Abstract Meditations from a Movable Chair consists of a series of non-fiction essays by Dubus that are detailed memoirs of his life. Just by reading the title, one can tell how the book describes the way that Dubus continued to write from his wheelchair after being “crippled” by his accident. Readers had the opportunity to experience this honest man’s life through his eyes. Being a handicapped man, everyday tasks became challenges, taking much longer to accomplish. Throughout all the hardships, Dubus had the perseverance to continue living his life and do what he loves; write. Book Review Andre Dubus' essay collection Meditations from a Movable Chair, is not a book that I would have chosen off of a prodigious bookshelf to read on my own time. Dubus incorporated twenty-five immensely personal short stories into this book to prove how hard life can be. From the very title of the book, most of the essays explain his reflection on how the accident changed him emotionally, fundamentally, and physically. Position Having read Meditations from a Movable Chair, I was very fond of these essays and actually enjoyed the disorganization of the chapters because I have a penchant for putting pieces together. The great thing about short stories is that they are thorough and get right to the point. Dubus writes about themes that are relatable to ordinary people; some of the themes include: family, tolerance/acceptance, religion/faith, perseverance, tragedy, art, literature, commitment...

...San Mateo, Kristina Marie (.) Ent102 MANILA FAME Reaction Paper Last Sunday, me and my co-entrep students went to MANILA FAME which was held in SMX Convention Center. As I walk through those furniture and handcrafts, I was really amazed on what I saw. I was stunned and really delighted. To think that there`s so much things you can do in an object as long as you have wide imagination and creativity, you can design and even put up a very unique thing that can change the world`s perception in furniture and handicrafts. And in that object you created you can earn a lot of money. In just a simple chair, a very simple chair, you can earn 300,000, just like that. Seriously, it invites people to sit and appreciate the art and the couches with oversized pillows make you want to linger. Those seats look comfortable. The tables I saw are super cool. I also appreciate the bed, the unique clothes made of pineapple, the handicrafts. Very nice. And of course, who wouldn`t notice the chandeliers (can we call it that?) is awesome. The wires are not as noticeable as I thought they would be. I really like the use of the unique couches, how they match the designs. Such a great idea. There certainly is a lot to see. And, I think the large pillows (with the printed animal on it) are pretty. And the chairs, it reminds me of antique stores whose owners place objects on the chairs to discourage customers from sitting on them (usually with good reason). Upon seeing the designs of the chairs, I...

...would like to go back to live, it’s a lot of jobs for bilingual people, things are not too expensive, and the economy is very stable now. In Lima there is a lot of Chinese food which is called chifa (several thousand Chinese restaurants in Lima) which is not the typical Chinese restaurants that we have in America, and fast food restaurants from around the world. In Lima we eat a lot of fish and rice. In the mountains they eat a lot of potatoes. In Cuzco they eat cuy (fried guinea pig) but that is not common in Lima. The Supermarkets are pretty wow, with everything you can imagine, and most things they have for tasting, including the alcohol. Still, there are no flavored chips, for some reason, Peru has not picked up the idea of flavored potato chips, which really is beyond me. But, the chocolate is good. Clothes, shoes etc., all much cheaper, although, I am yet to foray out and purchase anything, as my bags are full enough. I would love for many more people come to my country to visit and have a good time....

...plenty of time, it would be a splendid opportunity to try a good, slap-up supper. He said he would show us what could be done up the river in the way of cooking, and suggested that, with the vegetables and the remains of the cold beef and general odds and ends, we should make an Irish stew. It seemed a fascinating idea. George gathered wood and made a fire, and Harris and I started to peel the potatoes. I should never have thought that peeling potatoes was such an undertaking. The job turned out to be the biggest thing of its kind that I had ever been in. We began cheerfully, one might almost say skittishly, but our light-heartedness was gone by the time the first potato was finished. The more we peeled, the more peel there seemed to be left on; by the time we had got all the peel off and all the eyes out, there was no potato left – at least none worth speaking of. George came and had a look at it – it was about the size of a pea-nut. He said: “Oh, that won’t...

...Dialysis and Osmosis Beitz 1 Introduction: The cell membrane is not a solid structure. It is made of millions of smaller molecules that create a flexible container. Proteins and phospholipids make up most of the membrane structure. “The proteins are found around the holes and help move molecules in and out of the cell. There are also proteins attached to the inner and outer surfaces of the membrane” (BiologyKids, 15). There are receptor proteins which receive specific molecules, and there are transport proteins. There are two types of transport proteins which only allow specific molecules to enter and exits, therefore selectively permeable. Releasing chemicals is called Exocytosis, and taking in chemicals is endocytosis. “Scientists use the fluid mosaic model to describe the organization of phospholipids and proteins. The model shows you that phospholipid molecules are shaped with a head and a tail region. The head section of the molecule likes water (hydrophilic) while the tail does not (hydrophobic). Because the tails want to avoid water, they tend to stick to each other and let the heads face the watery (aqueous) areas inside and outside of the cell” (BiologyKids, 15). The two surfaces of molecules create the lipid bilayer. The interior of the lipid bilayer is “oily” and flexible like a soap bubble. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane, which is a barrier that has holes large enough to allow water molecules to pass but small enough...
