...killing Billy Budd? Is it Claggart, Captain Vere, or Billy Bubb himself? There are many people who will argue all three men are responsible for killing Billy Budd. Their argument is Claggart, also known as Jemmy Leggs, provoked Billy in to striking him, attacking an officer is a serious offense. Captain Vere witnessed Claggart pushing Billy’s buttons by yelling at him, accusing him of mutiny, and saw the frustration in Billy’s face, but did not pull rank and order both men to stand down. However Billy is responsible for his own actions and should never had let anyone control his emotions. Billy Budd is a simple man who has a stuttering problem and also he cannot read. Billy did not let that stop him from helping other sailors on board the ship. Billy was also naïve he only saw the good in people and didn’t believe his fellow sailors when they informed him that Claggart has it in for him. Dansker, a sailor stationed with Billy, stated to Billy “Jemmy Leggs is down on you” but, Billy ignored the warning. Billy didn’t believe him because Claggart always spoke to him in a sweet voice. Claggart is the ship’s Master of Arms; he is responsible for keeping the ship operating in an orderly fashion. He does this by ordering the flogging of sailors. A sailor could get flogged for any minor offence. The day Billy Budd checked on board the ship he witnessed a sailor getting flogged. When Billy asked why he was getting flogged a sailor informed him no one knows why anything could get you...

What the Englishman said about survival was this: "If you stop taking pride in your appearance, you will very soon die." ‘He said that he had seen several men die in the following way:’ "They ceased to stand up straight, then ceased to shave or wash, then ceased to get out of bed, then ceased to talk, then died. (pg 174)". All throughout the novel Billy is never given any respect and in doing so this cause an effect on Billy which will make him feel like he is worthless and can do nothing right and he believes everything that anyone tells him. Billy loses his uniqueness and his personality and becomes a blob that is why throughout the novel Billy latches on to people, for example Weary his war buddy Billy needs him to do everything for him. During the war Billy wanted to die when he was shot at by a sniper he stood there allowing the sniper to take another shot at Billy. Billy also did not care much for death after every mention of death in the novel it says “so it goes” because of all the things that happened to Billy throughout the war he got less affected by death and merely takes it as it happens to everyone and why cry or show any emotion towards it. All of the...

...Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis For Billy Fitzgerald I can still hear him shouting at me Lately in a wreck of a Californian ship, one of the passengers fastened a belt about him with two hundred pounds of gold in it, with which he was found afterwards at the bottom. Now, as he was sinking-had he the gold? or the gold him? —John Ruskin, Unto This Last Preface I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? For more than a decade the people who run professional baseball have argued that the game was ceasing to be an athletic competition and becoming a financial one. The gap between rich and poor in baseball was far greater than in any other professional sport, and widening rapidly. At the opening of the 2002 season, the richest team, the New York Yankees, had a payroll of $126 million while the two poorest teams, the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, had payrolls of less than a third of that, about $40 million. A decade before, the highest payroll...

... The adult who strongly influences my present life and will influence my future career decision is a very good friend of mine named Billy, who is nineteen. This influence of mine gives me motivation to do and be better, critical feedback, and tips and advice. Homer Hickam is motivated by his teacher, Miss Riley, to follow through with his dream and accomplish the most he can. Similar to my life, my influence motivates me to do better and accomplish as much as I can. Billy never gives up on me no matter how many mistakes I make, he believes I’ll be better, for example in school. Billy wasn’t a straight A student and prioritized school while he was in school but, he makes sure I do all my homework no matter how small it was. He expects big things from me in the future just like Miss Riley’s high expectation from Homer in the future. Today, Homer is a former NASA engineer so hopefully I’ll be just as successful with the guidance from my influence. Billy is a very smart person and is particularly good at visualizing and noticing small key things. Billy does not directly tell me whether I did a good job but the thought of me doing something perfectly right satisfies me because I know he is proud of me. This influences me greatly and affects how I would make a decision today. Before I make a decision for example on a test, I put myself in Billy shoes and think about how he would see it by using an alternative method to solve the question. Homer wouldn’t have went so far without...

...Which is worse, starting a mutiny to avoid putting one man to death, or putting one man to death to avoid a mutiny? Everyone agrees that Billy Budd was responsible for the death of the Master-at-Arms, John Claggart, and that severe punishment for this act was necessary to avoid starting a mutiny. However, some people believe that the court should have sentenced Billy to death while others believe the court should not have sentenced Billy to death. The court should have sentenced Billy to death for three reasons. It was entirely necessary that any act of killing be punished, the crew aboard the Bellipotent be controlled, and hostility amidst the crew be avoided. The first reason that the court should have sentenced Billy to death is that any act of killing must be punished. By...

The shop owner not sure but due to he wanted to sell the watch and told Billy it is made in Switzerland. Billy bought the watch and went home. He realized that the watch was actually made in China and he went back to the shop and wants a refund from the shop owner. However, the shop owner refused to pay back Billy. In this case it would be a voidable contract because the law allows that party to withdraw from the agreement if there is misrepresentation or fraud occurs in the contract. For example, Billy wanted to a refund from the shop owner because he gave wrong information to Billy as the GEZZ watch was made in Switzerland but actually made in China. Elements that take place in this case are offer, acceptance, intention to create legal relation, and consideration. 2.0 Offer According to (Quinn, 2007), the person who make offer called ‘offeror’ and person to whom the offer made is known as ‘offeree’. Offer can defined as a communication that treated as an offer if it specify the terms where ‘offeror’ is prepared to make an agreement to the ‘offeree’. ...Vonnegut is a book on the experiences of World War Billy Pilgrim, the main character of this book happened to be among the military soldiers participating in this war. As a soldier, not adequately trained appears in various events that surrounds his life in Dresden. The of the book, Kurt Vonnegut organizes this events in an abnormal chronological way as he fragments the events in relation to time, characters, and the structure to combine his nonlinear story. From the book, Slaughterhouse-Five, the initial details that the readers get about Billy is that he pays unsystematic visits to every event during the war period (Bloom 11). The experiences that Billy goes through are episodes that do have chronological obligations. This reflects the structure of the book that has the beginning, body and the conclusions, not placed traditionally. The author of the book says that Billy has, “come unstuck in time.” From this phrase, the author turns the time from something intangible to something tangible and therefore uses this as a fix to his own purpose (Federhen 44). The use of the word “unstuck” by the author implies that Billy is free. Apparently, Billy and Vonnegut achieve a certain level of freedom. In other words, Vonnegut and Billy have no limitations with time and the author, Vonnegut can place the character, Billy in a period of his choice. This makes the book have an effect of collage that makes the pieces and bits of the life that Billy has. However, the author of the book brings the...

...general badness of character, wickedness of the mind and heart, and also has an absence of religious principles. A depraved individual is one who will do corrupt acts and practices to the good that surrounds them. John Claggart is a character in Herman Melville’s Billy Budd, Sailor, which is consumed with depravity. He is the evil of the story. The following paragraphs will present Claggart’s depravity. The evil nature of Claggart is depicted in the way he looks. The following paragraph is a detailed description of John Claggart the master-at-arms: “Claggart was a man about five-and-thirty, …a vague field for unfavorable surmise” (Melville 2445-2446). He is a handsome man just as Billy is, but his chin has a strangeness about it that Melville uses images of Tecumseh, and Oates to reference it to. Melville’s comparison of Claggart to these two men, who have questionable backgrounds, puts a negative shadow on Claggart’s nature, to separate the evil “handsome” sailor from the good “handsome” sailor. The skin color of Claggart is described as almost without color; the narrator states that he appears to have “something defective or abnormal” (Melville 2445) in his blood. This could be a way of presenting Claggart’s depravity by showing that he has so much evil inside him that it has consumed him and is now without skin color. Billy does not know evil so he appears tanned and healthy looking. Claggart tries to appear of high social class but the other sailors notice there “lurked...

...encounters. Billy thinks about how life is meaningless and it never ends, just repeats and repeats. Kurt Vonnegut uses a lot of black humor and a lot of irony throughout this novel. Corresponding of this, readers are able to realize the disgust of the war, but at the same time laugh at some of the absurd situations Billy goes through. Vonnegut beautifully shows that life is simultaneously worthwhile and meaningless. All people react differently when it comes to calamities; some people mourn, some avoid the tragedy all together. In Slaughterhouse-five,...

...It's early in the morning, a Tuesday ironically, when Billy gets the call to collect Sam Winchester’s soul. She's surprised that Sam is being collected, and Dean isn't, because she had always assumed they would go out swinging, together. When she gets to Sam, the scene before her is nothing like she imagined the younger Winchester’s death to look like. There are no demons, or angry spirits, he isn't killed by a wendigo, or a witch. He's killed by a seventeen year old boy, driving an old Chevy pickup. Sam is lying almost motionless, in the middle of a quiet road. He’s the victim of a hit and run. There’s an awful lot of blood surrounding him, pooling around his chest, and his blood is bubbling rhythmically from his mouth. As a reaper, she's seen her fair share of hit and run deaths, but this is different. This is Sam Winchester, the man who saved the world from Apocalypse, not once but twice, the man who rid the world of the devil, twice. The man who has killed thousands of evil creatures alongside his brother, and now here he lay, in...
