For the first half of the year I sat at a table full of people who I did not like, nor did they like me. Everyday I dreaded going to that lunch table knowing that I would not be able to talk to people that i thought were my friends. Every so often i would hear them talking bad about people that I was aware they were friends with. One day we went on a courage retreat, and it was a really fun time. At the end we all sat in a circle at some people went up at talked about what they were going to stand up for. I being the impulsive person that I am went up “I’m going to stand up for people that the girls at my lunch table are talking about.” The day after I came to school completely oblivious to what was about to come to me. The same routine of not talking to me quickly came to an end when one of the girls confronted me about what I said. Eventually I left to throw my trash away and came back to all the girls at the table giggling then looking up at me and stopping. I didn’t fight, i didn’t argue, i just grabbed my lunch box and walked away. The next day I didn’t go back to that table, one of the people in my advisory told me I could come sit with her at the table she sat at. I later became close friends with all of them and still sit with them to this day. Without courage I would not have been able to stand my ground and walk away. I am a very nervous person when it comes to confrontation but in this moment I didn’t care, I could have fought, but I that would have been cowardly. Courage helped me walk away and leave the toxicity of the situation I was

Why Try Erase History?

...Cristal Gonzalez Mrs. Patterson English III - 5B 14 May 2013 Why Try to Erase History? To Kill a Mockingbird, for various reasons is marked top and a must read before you die, because of its outstanding lessons through the eyes of a little girl. This book teaches history and life lessons better than any textbook or teacher. Society strongly believes there is no reason for banning this book, because it teaches about racism, shows courage, and gives a mental vision of how society has changed since then. It’s very difficult when people have decided your verdict by just seeing the color of your skin. People shouldn’t be judged by how they look; in the end we’re all human, nothing more nothing less. There are different types of courage shown throughout the book. It ranges from how courageous a kid could be and an adult too. Society has come a long way, and it has changed for the best. When you realize in the book how society was, you think to yourself how could people be so cruel? Although years after, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself said, “…I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character…” (King). To Kill a Mockingbird, teaches racism better than any textbook, “I thought it taught things about racism and tolerance better than a history textbook,” (Oakley Ebscohost). To Kill a Mockingbird Essay

...It is true that Harper Lee’s novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is more than just a simple story. Novels that challenge the reader’s way of thinking become distinct from others. Lee explores key ideas such as prejudice and courage and challenges readers to think about major moral issues experienced in society .The story at first seems like any other childish novel but Lee highlights key ideas making the novel evolve into something much greater. Lee shows the co-existence of Good and Evil and the moral nature of human beings in society. Readers re-evaluate their understanding of the world making the book much more significant. Ideas such as prejudice and courage are emphasized in To Kill a Mockingbird. Prejudice is the preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. My Grandfather – a Commemorative Speech

...My Grandfather – A Commemorative Speech Some people leave this earth without their names being immortalized in history books, but that does not mean that they are forgotten. They are remembered by their friends and family. And some special people are remembered by people they hardly knew. My grandfather was one of those people. My grandfather was a special man. What made him special? Why will he be remembered by not only friends and family but also by small acquaintances? It was because he was a very selfless and compassionate man. He put everyone before himself in every situation. This was a man who worked three jobs at a time to support his wife and six children. He struggled most of his life to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. But he did so with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He didn’t just speak of compassion. Often he would let his children’s friends stay with them when their parents couldn’t keep them in their own home for various reasons. And though he wasn’t a rich man, he provided them with a roof over their head and food on the table, the same as he would do his own family. These children will remember the man who took them in when they had nowhere else to go. And he did not just speak of courage. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Often he would treat me to stories of when he saved fellow shipmates from being thrown overboard in the middle of a typhoon. And when he pulled into the port of Nagasaki and saw the...

Tim O' Brien Comparison

...Savannah Chacon Thomas Laird English 101 4 November 2014 Tim O’Brien Tim O'Brien was in college when the Vietnam War was happening which influenced his work. His most popular work is called “The Things They Carried” which is a book compiled of short stories about his experience in the Vietnam War. There are 6 of his short stories: The Things They Carried, Love, Spin, On The Rainy River, Enemies and Friends, How To Tell a True War Story which was published in 1990. His next popular work was “Going After Cacciato” which was written in 1978. The similarities in themes is that they are both surrounded by the idea of war. In “The Things They Carried,” there are psychological burdens from the war that follow these soldiers for the rest of their lives. O’Brien uses the title, “things they carried” to imply that the “things” the characters carry in these stories are both literal and figurative. While they all carry heavy physical loads, they also all carry heavy emotional loads, full of grief, fear, and love. In the novel “Going After Cacciato,” the theme is seen as having courage and taking control. Both of these themes from these two different books relate because the theme of control is a theme that subsumes and defines courage itself; therefore, courage in war requires self-control of body, senses, and emotions. Soldiers must have a lot of self-control in order to be in war because they must follow orders without questioning. In “The Things They Carried,” The main character is...
