I refuse to participate in the charade of pretending to be surprised to see a classmate, and when I'm asked, "What have you been doing?" as one inevitably is, I never know where to draw the line between "stuff" and the full, self-reflective version one might share with a close friend. I think too much detail implies an exaggerated sense of self-worth and is hence a greater faux pas than too little detail, so I've always hewed closer to the "stuff" version, but this runs its own risk of suggesting you don't think the other person is important enough to merit the full telling of your own story. Kimbrough Sherman's production management course is a required course which deals with the operational aspects of a business, such as what goods and services it provides, where it locates, and how it organizes resources, people, and processes. The course has two major thrusts: (1) strategic and tactical decision making and (2) standard (mostly quantitative) decision techniques. Writing in Sher- man's course was directed at the strategic and tactical areas. We (Walvoord and Sherman) collaborated in gathering the data and writing the chapter with generous help from McCarthy and other team members, who helped to shape the study, check data, and critique chapter drafts. Olivares Department of Psychology Bridgewater State College oolivares@bridgew.edu Abstract Our intuition, and perhaps our experience, suggests that study time should be positively associated with grades. However, the study time-grade association literature has provided inconsistent findings: some researchers have found a positive association, others a negative association, and yet others no association between study time and grades. The present research sought to better understand the nature of the study time-grade association by examining the effects of student, teacher and course characteristics on study time, grades, and the study time-grade association. Results show that study time and grades were inversely associated (r = -.19). Regression analyses indicate that grade inflation was the best predictor of study time; that is, as grade inflation increased study time decreased. Course difficulty was the best predictor of grades; as perceptions of course difficulty increased expected grades decreased. And, course difficulty, grade inflation and student cognitive ability moderated the study time-grade association. Thus, data suggest that the study time-grade association may be spurious. The majority of new students entering higher education leave their initial college of choice without completing a degree (Tinto, 1993), and national attrition rates have been increasing since the early 1980s at two-year and four-year institutions, both public and private (Postsecondary Education Opportunity, 2002). At all types of higher education institutions, including highly selective colleges and universities, the most critical period or stage of vulnerability for student attrition continues to be the first year of college (“Learning Slope,” 1991). More than half of all students who withdraw from college do so during their first year (Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange, 1999), resulting in a first-year attrition rate of more than 25% at four-year institutions, and approximately 50% at two-year institutions (ACT, 2003). Retention research suggests that student commitment to educational and career goals is perhaps the strongest factor associated with persistence to degree completion (Wyckoff, 1999). ...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis.
