...Humanity’s Next Great Leap Media Analysis of a Scientific Case Study Abstract The human race’s ability to manipulate the world around us has continued to grow exponentially as we have made our various technological leaps further forward into the future. J. Craig Venter, and a team of his best and brightest, managed to push the envelope even further with his breakthrough discoveries in genomic research, resulting in the creation of the first ever self-replicating man-made living cell. Many pivotal discoveries such as this have played key roles in shaping humanity’s development. Things that were once considered to be out of our reach or of unknown origins have slowly been unlocked as a result of the advancements we have made through the ages. This paper analyzes how the journalists of three separate internet news articles reported on JCVI’s successful creation of a synthetic bacterial cell. The purpose was to interpret the articles and to determine whether or not the information within them accurately reported the findings of the J. Craig Venter Institute’s case study. There has been a great deal of speculation as to what the next scientific advancement will be to act as the catalyst for the next great leap forward in mankind’s long history of scientific progressions. Many of our newly discovered technologies have greatly improved the quality of our lives, while others have simply given rise to increasingly more efficient ways for killing one another. The difference between...

...LIBERTY THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY BOOK CRITIQUE: TWO VIEWS ON WOMEN IN MINISTRY A Paper Submitted to Liberty Theological Seminary Dr. Garry Graves In partial fulfillment of the requirements For completion of the course Systematic Theology II THEO 530 By Vernon L Langley July 26, 2012 Beck, James R. Two Views on Women in Ministry: Revised ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2005. ISBN: 978-0-310-25437-9. Thesis Statement: in view of the fact that my own outlook on women’s responsibility in ministry is in between social equality and Complementarian; however I will attempt to show that women have a part in ministry, through the assessment of these two differing points of views as offered in the principal book Two Views on Women In Ministry and as contrasted with other academic books. Introduction: Dr. James R. Beck has assembled four academic assessments which present the egalitarian and complementarianism / hierarchical analysis regarding women in ministry with unprejudiced supplementary counterpoints to completely enlighten the one who reads. The arrangement of analysis appear to evaluate and distinguish in a reasonable, impartial way that supply the one who reads with a good insight of the dispute, with opposing opinions offered at the conclusion of every article. However, the reasonable approach to the arrangement of both components regarding women in ministry do not completely disclose...

...Sweet ladies “Sweet ladies” is a British short story adapted from the original story written by Rachel Cusk and published in 2003. Sweet Ladies is about a woman named Sylvia Furnish who owns a candy store. One day a small group of women come into her store with all of their children and she catches one of the children stealing candy. Sylvia confronts the mother, and the son, named Troy, starts defending his mother, but ends up apologizing and returns the candy bar. The story stretches over a day, and it is written from Sylvia’s point of view. The story takes place in Doniford, which is a city in the southern part of England and it is described as a cold and windy city because it is near the sea. Mostly the characters in the story are in the candy store, which is a two story building where Sylvia lives on the upper floor. The store is not described as good as I could be, but when you read the story you assume that it is a small dark store because she describes the smell as a “chalky smell of sweets” (page 1line 33) and there is a bell over the door that chimes every time someone walks in. In the store Sylvia sells candy, tobacco and some stationary (page 1line 31). Sylvia Furnish is a very strong minded and bitter woman, but deep down she turns out to be kind and loving (page 4 lines 132-133) because she decides to give Troy a candy bar, the next time he comes to the store, even though he just tried to steal from her. The reason why she is so bitter could be because she...

...–––Grade Marking: Briefing for students What is grade marking? Southampton Solent University is introducing a new system of marking your assignments called grade marking. This means that for most of your assessments, you’ll get a grade (e.g. B2) rather than a number (e.g. 65) when your work is returned to you. The exception is assessment where you can either be right or wrong, such as some multiple choice tests, where you will still be given a mark. Why is grade marking being introduced? Although marks are currently given on a scale of 0-100, research has shown that most tutors only mark between 35-75%, and that actually, marks are only reliable to 2-3%. Therefore having fewer marking points, spread more widely, will mean that marking will be fairer, and that your best and worst marks will be better represented in your final degree mark. Grades also match exactly with the Generic Grading Criteria that you use in your assessments. If you get a B2 in one assignment, you can use the grading criteria to show you what you need to improve on to get a B1 or an A4 in your next assignment. Overall, we think, and research has shown, that grade marking is better for both staff and students. What do I have to do? You don’t have to do anything. All your assessments from now on will be returned to you with a grade, apart from exams and some assignments that have clear right or wrong answers which will still be in numbers. Staff in the faculty offices will change...

However, due to its ability to interrogate power, critique the news and ability to possess dialogue and democracy the Daily Show is the epitome of alternative journalism these qualities emerged in the shows October, 29th 2013 episode in particular. Geoffrey Baym states in his article “The Daily Show: Discursive Integration and the Reinvention of Political Journalism”, he believes The Daily Show is a prime form of alternative Journalism and the shows ability to function as both entertainment and news has brought on mass appeal of all generations. Drawing on live broadcast coverage of public statements and government proceedings, the content of The Daily Show resembles much of the mainstream news media. The show contains a few major content elements where within each; various aspects of alternative journalism emerge. One is the satire news update. The daily show advances beyond the style of “fake news” like other talk shows. The satire segment often focuses on national and global issues of significance left unquestioned. For example in The Daily Show’s October, 29th episode Stewart begins the program with a segment called “is that a good thing or bad thing”, within this segment he is able to critique the news by showing his audience live broadcast coverage from mainstream news organizations such as CNN...

More importantly, they need to be able to convert the wealth of available data and information into a valuable form for decision-making and action. Collected data must be converted into intelligence. This is accomplished through analysis. Strategic and Competitive Analysis comprehensively examines the wide spectrum of techniques involved in analyzing business and competitive data and information including environmental analysis, industry analysis, competitor analysis, and temporal analysis models. It helps business analysts and decision-makers to draw effective conclusions from limited data and to put together information that does not often fit together at first glance. The Analysis Iceberg Strategic management involves all aspects of a business and requires a knowledge and understanding of the environmental impacts on an organization to ensure that correct decisions are made and taken. It is not just about looking at best fit...

...Divine Foreknowledge: Four Views By James K. Beilby and Paul R. Eddy Eds. Student Name: Kevin M. Polito Student Number: 1516105 Essential Christian Doctrine 1 Spring 2013 – Lewis Word Count: 3,054 Introduction: A necessary and timely book “Throughout the history of the church, Christians have discussed the nature and content of God’s divine foreknowledge” So, rather innocuously, begins the introduction to the text under review. Recently, these “discussions” have become more frequent and heated due, in part, to a robust Calvinist resurgence seen throughout Christendom, especially within the United States. The places and individuals who are engaged in such debates are as varied as the ivory tower and the theologians who inhabit them all the way to the local, faithful Sunday school teacher presenting material to her students who attend her small, rural church. The debate is robust within evangelicalism because of the implications that one’s adopted view has on important questions such as: 1. The Nature of and mode of God’s foreknowledge 2. The Nature of Divine Sovereignty 3. The Nature of Human Freedom Divine Foreknowledge: Four Views is a necessary and timely book. Although, church history bears witness to a diversity of opinions regarding the nature and content of God’s divine foreknowledge, the need for careful and scholarly examination remains as relevant and important as any point in church history. An encroaching, imperious secularism...

...Shieber, J. (2009). Personal responsibility and middle knowledge: A challenge for the molinist. International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, 66(2), 61-70. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11153-008-9194-5 In this paper, I develop and discuss an argument intended to demonstrate that the Molinist notion of middle knowledge, and in particular the concept of counterfactuals of freedom, is incompatible with the notion of personal responsibility (for created creatures). In Sect. 1, I discuss the Molinist concepts of middle knowledge and counterfactuals of freedom. In Sect. 2, I develop an argument (henceforth, the Transfer of Negative Responsibility Argument, or TNRA) to the effect that, due to their construal of the concepts of middle knowledge and counterfactuals of freedom, Molinists are not entitled to the notion that individuals are personally responsible--even for those actions that they freely perform. I then discuss the only two promising strategies for rejecting the argument in Sects. 3 and 4. Finally, in Sect. 5, I contend that, although TNRA may be unsuccessful as an internal argument against the Molinist, either of the possible strategies for rejecting TNRA poses a difficulty for the Molinist. Both response strategies force the Molinist into adopting a popular compatibilist strategy for rejecting a common negative argument against compatibilism. Thus, if Molinism represents a libertarian--i.e., incompatibilist--account of human freedom (as, e.g., Flint claims in his...

That Scripture teaches the doctrine of divine providence cannot be denied. The very act of creation was the result of God’s providence, as the created order resulted solely from His will and power. Simply, the world did not have to be; it came to be as a matter of divine choice. As a result, our world is contingent; it has no independent existence, but exists “moment to moment only in and through and unto God (Neh. 9:6; Ps. 104:30; Rom. 11:36; Heb. 1:3; Rev. 4:11).”1 In other words, the world and everything in it is entirely dependent on God for its being as God actively “works all things according to the counsel...
