Memorials are variant by nature. They can be as complex as a whole museum based off a historical event, or they can be as simple as writing a tune that’s dedicated to a close friend. They can be completely personal - or they can be simply for remembrance. Monuments, however, are a bit more formal. A monument, by definition, is a structural figure whether it being a building, statue, or any other construction, that was built solely for the purpose to pay tribute to an acclaimed or significant person/event. When the location, size, material, and purpose for the monument is all carefully thought out, the monument becomes greatly successful in honoring what or who it was built for, thus achieving it’s purpose for existence. Therefore, these factors must be considered by the group or agency when constructing a monument.…show more content… The Crazy Horse Memorial, located a few miles from Mount Rushmore just outside Rapid City, is a pure work of art that commemorates the Sioux leader Crazy Horse, and the Indian tribes that previously lived there. Creation of this national icon started in 1948 by the sculpture none other than Korczak Ziolkowski, who dedicated 30 years of his life working on this alone before he passed away in 1982, and is buried in front of the mountain (Source C). The message that this monument conveys is very significant to its remembrance of the Sioux leader, Crazy Horse.
