...An essay is usually a short piece of writing. It is often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can be literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population provide counterexamples. It is very difficult to define the genre into which essays fall. Aldous Huxley, a leading essayist, gives guidance on the subject: Like the novel, the essay is a literary Abstract This article will examine the reasons why it is important both linguistically and psychologically to build a vocabulary quickly when learning a foreign language. Descriptive Essay

...Writing a Descriptive Essay Directions An essay has the same elements as a well-written paragraph. A paragraph has a topic sentence; an essay has a thesis statement. A paragraph is developed with supporting statements; an essay has three paragraphs based on the thesis statement's supporting ideas. A paragraph has a concluding sentence; an essay has a concluding paragraph. An introduction does two things: it gets your reader's attention, and it presents the thesis statement. The thesis statement identifies the topic of the essay. Look at the introductions below Example #1 If we were to place the body of every teenager who died in an alcohol-related accident in the last five years endto-end, the line would circle the globe three times. Every year, hundreds of teenagers lose their lives because of drunk drivers. Driving drunk is a growing problem in our society, and the consequences are great. Example #2 Hundreds of teenagers lose their lives because of drunk drivers. It is a problem that affects students in every school in America. Driving drunk is a growing problem in our society because more and more teens are drinking and then driving without considering the serious consequences that could result from their actions. These consequences include financial burdens, sorrow caused to those losing loved ones, and the senseless reduction of our greatest natural resource: our young people. Which introduction catches your interest and pulls you into the text? Hopefully...

Pre-Med AMSA Reflection

...Initial Reflection I was writing this paper I started by going to the Pre-Med AMSA’s website and making the flyer using the basic layout of most flyers. I used a template on Microsoft to organize my flyer and then I put the information I found on the club’s website in along with the logo. After doing my process work I took the suggestions and I switched the logo and contact information around so that the flyer would be more effective. After revising my flyer, I started creating my essay with the introduction where I included Ann John’s definition of a community of practice and a description of my community. When I began describing the Genre convention and the social role I tried to include as much detail as possible while answering all...

Chemotherapy Reflection

...going to college at all. Dramatic right? This is because I knew that essays go hand and hand with any English class like side effects with chemotherapy. And just like the cancer treatment, the pain needs to be endured in order to advance to the next level. So that is what this course was for me -- a 5-week chemotherapy session. I have never had to go through chemo so I do not have the credibility to compare the two, but just allow me to exaggerate my disdain for writing. Throughout this course, I repeatedly participated in the essay review process, was forced to learn how to form a proper thesis, and was introduced to graphic organizing techniques that will, unfortunately, actually help me out in the future. The essay review process is almost as boring as it sounds and is self-defined in its name. Writing an essay consists of brainstorming ideas, creating a rough draft, reviewing the rough draft, then submitting the final paper. We learned this early on in English class and as a matter of fact, we had to submit a “bio” of who we were on the first day of class. Now as I look back at that...

Essay Sources Reliable and Relevant

...papers and essays all over the world. The internet, articles and journal, and books are commonly used to obtain this information. The determination of reliability and relevance will give supportive background to the writing. Monitoring for biased or unsupportive information is important as well. These guidelines create strength and assurance that the information provided is accurate. I determined my sources to be reliable and relevant by utilizing the university’s library. The sources are determined credible by the university. The publication dates, credentialed authors, and subject relevance were checked before consideration of usage. I attempted to check the purpose of the information, its supportive points, and the citations provided. These are others ways that I determined reliability and relevance. While researching, I used specific criteria when using the search tool. I noted the appropriateness of tone, structure, and supportive elements in which the writing reviewed. The material was evaluated for negative principles and eliminated anything that contained content that hinted toward a biased opinion. There were no biased authors from what I could conclude. Obtained material was used to strengthen my essay by creating a supportive and consistent flow of information. Facts and reproducible information helped to create an effective paper and make my essay creditable. If the information is not reliable it could create an ineffective sequence of evidence creating weakness...

Is Cheating Wrong?

...example, a student has to write an essay on a specific topic, but because of a full schedule including sports and music lessons, along with poor time management, the student finds himself sitting at the computer the night before the essay is due, completely drawing a blank when it comes to beginning the essay. It is easy to go on the internet, search for the topic and then find several websites dedicated to essays on that topic. The student using another person’s essay as their own will only hurt them in the long run. They may be caught and punished for plagiarizing, as there is a multitude of software available to detect plagiarizing. A teacher gives the assignment to measure the student’s understanding, ability, and comprehension of the actual act of writing the essay. It is with these assignments that the student can learn and perfect good writing habits, a skill that is taken with them into adult life. Cheating in sports has been happening for a very long time. As far back as 1919, cheating was recorded in the baseball World Series; the cheaters then became infamous for their cheating behavior rather than their performance on the field. It can be argued that the behavior was talked about more than the actual baseball game itself. When anyone cheats in sports, they not only let themselves down, but they also let down their teammates and their fans. The most common method of cheating in sports is using performance enhancing drugs, creating the illusion that sportsman is better...

The Importance Of Writing

...In high school, I hated writing essays for my English classes. At first, I did not have a reliable writing process. I would free write a rough draft and turn it in as a final draft. I would also write last minute instead of using the time to create a well-thought essay. I focused more on passing a class rather than boosting my writing skills. Now that I am in college, I take writing seriously. Throughout the years, my writing process has drastically changed. As a writer, I will continue to advance my writing skills. Prewriting is significant when preparing for an essay, although this step is most of the time ignored. The process of writing is just as important as the writing itself. Prewriting is great for writers to have an organized essay. Sectioning the writing process can make writing less stressful and gives the writer more time to go back and improve their paper. My writing process consists of brainstorming, outlining, rough drafting, and peer revisions....

Great Essay Presentation

...Tips for a Great College Essay Why write an essay? The purpose of the essay is to convince admission officers whom you’ve never met, in less than ten minutes, that you would be a good match for their colleges. At the most basic level, it allows admission officers to evaluate your communication and writing skills. In addition, the essay allows admission officers to discover more about you as a person – a side of you not shown by statistics like grades and SATs. The essay gives information about your history, attitudes, interests and creativity; it gives a sense of your values and goals. What admission officers are doing is creating a community…looking to see how you would fit in that community, what would you bring to that community and what sets you apart. How the essay is evaluated • • • Is your writing mechanically sound? Is your writing style comfortable? Can you write a good sentence? Can you write a good paragraph? Do you address the question asked? Can you form a thesis? Can you discuss a theme? Is your argument logical? Can you get in and out of the essay with some finesse? Do you write with style, nuance and creativity? Do you write with a distinctive voice? Choosing a topic Choose the essay topic that appeals to you most. The topic is less important than your delivery Remember: there is no right or wrong answer. The college just wants to know who you are and how your mind works. Bad essay topics - there are bad essays, not bad topics; but be...

Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...We all know love. We have all loved in some kind of way. We love our parents, significant others and even our friends. But we can also love other things like animals or material things. But what is the difference between loving and liking? And is it better not to love and feel pain or to love and be hurt in the progress? Jonathan Franzen seeks to answer these questions in his essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts”. The essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is, as mentioned, written by Jonathan Franzen and published in The New York Times, May 28, 2011. Jonathan Franzen is born in 1959, and he is an acclaimed American novelist and essayist. The essay is based on the commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College in Ohio, USA. “Our technology has become extremely adept in creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly. (…)” As Franzen claims in his essay, many people can feel like they love their technological object. It gives them a satisfaction, which human interaction maybe wouldn’t. Franzen however thinks, that people in general don’t love material things: they like them. There is a major difference between loving and liking – even though it might appear small. “Liking, in general, is commercial culture’s substitute for loving.” Products are made to be likeable, but if that concept in transferred to a person, you would instantly see...
