...Through the activity, I realized how silly it was to work against my usual steps based methodology in order to create a creative collage. My initial intention of going without a plan was to not limit myself within the boundaries of an outline so that I can freely decide on materials that I think would fit in my collage. This resulted in me just blindly looking for images that would represent MediaCorp but do not portray the lack of creativity in the industry. Reflecting on it, I could have used the systematic approach in a way that would not limit my material gathering. Creativity is an abstract topic and to represent it in a collage would be difficult. By brain storming and coming up with a plan on how to represent the topic, I could have saved time on the search for new cut outs half way through the collage making. Having a plan beforehand will not limit the materials that I can gather as long as I do not rigidly follow the plan down to every single detail but instead use it as a guideline. The efficiency enhancing methodologies do not limit creativity, most of the time it is the wrong usage of such methods that is the culprit. This point is supported by an interview with Dr. Larry Wending, vice president of the 3M’s research department, made in a Business Week article by Brian Hindo (2007). "In some cases in the lab it made sense, but in other cases, people were going around dreaming up green-belt programs to fill their quota of green-belt programs for that time...

...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays Week One Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. One situation that comes immediately to mind is the phenomenon of climate change we are currently dealing with and how we are woefully unprepared to cope with it. If critical and/or creative thought had been used by all concerned, instead of fear and denial, we would be in a better position to handle and curtail these climate changes. When the data that pointed to human-induced climate change first was made public, it seemed that fear and hysteria was the common theme in most discussions of the problem. It has gotten better in recent years but it may be a case of too little, too late. It is important to think critically and creatively because it helps you to see the whole picture. When you think critically, all sides of the problem such as history, a source, a context are considered making a realistic and effective solution to a problem more likely. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Explain how we use them to form thoughts. What role does each play in critically assessing situations? We have free will when we have the freedom of self-determination, action and ability to make choices. If the choice is consistent with a person's desires and nature then it is representative of a person’s...

...Christabel, Part III (in fairy tale format) Bracy the bard stood silently, stunned by Sir Leoline’s dismissive and fleeting regard for his warning, albeit a warning that came in a dream. Sir Leoline was never one to question Bracy’s sense, for his sense was always good and accurate. ‘They should not leave today, they should postpone immediately,’ thought Bracy. But that was simply no longer an option. Sir Leoline had made up his mind, it appeared, and there was no changing it. To have led Geraldine away, leaving his beloved daughter Christabel in a puddle of tears and emotional turmoil on the cold castle floor, despite her pleas, was strange behaviour on his part. ‘Something was amyss,’ thought Bracy. Sir Leoline’s behaviour was surprising, for Christabel was the one person Sir Leoline would do anything for. She was his only daughter, and the only living reminder of his dead wife that he so adored. ‘Something terrible is looming over the castle,’ thought Bracy, but he did not know what. Bracy led a wailing Christabel to her bedroom, shaking his head. Moments passed, and Sir Leoline and Geraldine were walking through the castle. Geraldine stopped Sir Leoline suddenly, sobbing quietly. She turned to Sir Leoline and looked deep into his eyes. Her eyes turned snake-like and glared. Sir Leoline did not appear to notice, but only seemed mesmerized. Geraldine began to speak, and expressed her regret for having caused Christabel to act so wildly. ‘I want nothing more than the best for...

... 2. Narrative a. Purpose i. A narrative essay tells a story. It can be fact or fiction, however it does tell a story. Generally speaking the story has a meaning of sort. Narratives are interesting and creative ways to teach a moral to others. In the Narrative I want a Wife, Brady tells a story when her friend, a man, came to her house and made a comment that he wanted another wife. Thinking about what her friend had said, she decided that she would like the same. (Brady, 1971) b. Plot in a chronological series of events ii. The moral of a narrative is what would drive the plot. The plot of a narrative should be in a distinct chronological order. This makes the narrative easy to understand and easy to follow. The chronological order of narratives are mostly in a timeline effect. 1st this happened, then this happened, then something else happened. Or I said this to Bob. Bob replied with this. I did this after Bob’s response. Whether it be in chronological, spatial or built oin dramatic order, the structure of narratives are always easy, and clear to follow. iii. c. Creative tension iv. A good Narrative also contains creative tension. Creative tension will allow the write to build up the reader in suspense. Sometimes, the creative tension actually compels the reader in a way which strikes a problem or issue that is unresolved during the storyline. ...An essay is usually a short piece of writing. It is often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can be literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population provide counterexamples. It is very difficult to define the genre into which essays fall. Aldous Huxley, a leading essayist, gives guidance on the subject: Like the novel, the essay is a literary Abstract This article will examine the reasons why it is important both linguistically and psychologically to build a vocabulary quickly when learning a foreign language. The article asserts that very little can be achieved or learned in a foreign language with a small vocabulary and that by building a sizable vocabulary quite quickly one can soon be able to function adequately. You may also wish to look at http://www.jalt-publications.org/tlt/files/95/feb/meara.html Introduction It is obvious that in order to learn a foreign language one needs to learn many many words. ...Some students find it difficult to come up with impressive and insightful essays when they are being told to submit one in class. Since writing requires you to be skilful, creative and smart all at the same time this makes writing essays all the more difficult. Students are compelled to generate essays for their own good like when they are being prepared for college or when they are required to write essays about themselves for documentation purposes. For whatever reason, some students find it a struggle to come up with a mix of words and make it appear sensible and brilliant. Here are a few suggestions on how to write your very own essay without straining your brain too much. First of all, one must know that you have to keep it simple. You have to know that as a student, not much is expected from you so you shouldn’t pressure yourself too much. Just make a carefree and free flowing essay that mainly talks about yourself and no one else. If you do have to include any other person in your essay in which you believe is quite necessary then it has to be done minimally. Perhaps you can mention your parents and your siblings. Other than that, it would just be a complete waste of your time. So start off with an introduction about yourself, what your name is, where you live. Like this example here: I am (insert name here) and I am currently residing at (insert address here). This introduction will give the reader the idea a bit of who you are. Then you can include the basics such...

...What Does a Good Essay Need? • An academic essay aims to persuade readers of an idea based on evidence. • An academic essay should answer a question or task. • It should have an argument. • It should try to present or discuss something: develop a ‘thesis’ or a set of closely related points - by reasoning and evidence. • An academic essay should include relevant examples, supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources. 1. Starting Your Essay Although there are some basic steps to writing an assignment, essay writing is not a linear process. You might work through the different stages a number of times in the course of writing an essay. For example, you may go back to the reading and notetaking stage if you find another useful text, or perhaps to reread to locate specific information. Start work early You can’t write a successful essay unless you give yourself enough time to read, research, think and write. Don’t procrastinate or leave it until the last minute; start as early as possible. Define the question and analyse the task Writing down everything you know about a topic is not enough to make a good academic essay. Analysing, then answering the essay’s question or task is central. • Be sure that you understand exactly what the question requires you to do. • Identify the key words (like discuss or analyse) and clarify the approach you are required to take. See The Learning Centre guide ‘Answering Assignment Questions’ 2. Researching...

...WRITING THE CRITICAL ANALYSIS The following format for writing a Critical Analysis constitutes an excellent initiation to the literary essay. These steps teach you to write, and think ‘up’ the Taxonomy. These are the preliminaries to the literary essay. DESCRIPTION: Give a brief description of the scene (comprehension, interpretation). This paragraph also includes a thesis statement from which this short essay flows ANALYSIS: In composing the analysis you are ‘writing to learn’ as you examine how the devices work in the literature. As you go through an analysis, select only those details on which the effect of the selection most obviously depends. (Whether or not the author ‘meant’ to use the elements in the way they did is a moot point.) Analyzing the creative product and how it works. (application, analysis). INTERPRETATION: Use all the knowledge gained from reading and analyzing the scene and put it together into a short discussion of the overall effects. Some questions to examine may be: What is the purpose of the scene? How does it develop character, conflict or theme? What are the explicit and implicit messages? What is its effect on its audience’s sympathies? (interpretation, analysis, synthesis) JUDGEMENT This is a summative statement about the learning / insight / understanding gained through the analysis of the scene. What have you learned through studying it – about the play, about the theme, about the craft of thegenre ingeneral, about the manipulation...

...Christine Professor Lydia Gardner English 101.091 2.22.2013 Essay #1 Writing Style Writing is a process that take practice to perfect. Like everybody, my writing has it's srenghths and weaknesses. In order to understand your writing strenghts and weaknesses, you must know your learning style.Knowing your learning style can help you learn how you think, how you work and how you write. My writing characteristics are independent, rational and concrete are my three best writing strenghths, here is three reasons why i agree. .According to my results i am a independent writer, willing to spend time thinking about a topic then able to pull ideas together easily. I have to agree, i take the term "writing is a process" seriously becuause i know it takes time to reach a destination as far as a paper is concerned.i save all my drafts which helps me see the differenece between my first draft and my final draft. Seeing that difference strenghths my reslove to spend writing one step at a time to pull together ideas.I particularly spend a lot of time on planning my piece. Planning involves deciding how I am going to organize my essay, how I am going to deliver it, and recognizing the expectations of the reader. For example, while writing my first essay on gun violence, I acknowledged that one of things I need to do is to make sure my professor doesn't fall asleep at...

...1. This essay suggests that an "American Idiot" is a perosn that relies on the media and gives into emotional tactics. For example, someone who pledges allegiance before they understand much of anything about America. It is somebody who just does what everybody else is doing. 2. An example of contextual analysis is when you were describing the cover of the album and how the music within inspired your emotions. "Widely considered one of the best anti-war protests of 2004, the album came complete with the picture of a hand gripping a bloody heart-shaped grenade. While the cover gave me an idea for one of the shoot's best photos, it was the music within that gave voice to my anger and consoled my relentlessness, assuring me that I wasn't the only one that believed so passionately that our country was on the wrong track." (page 1, paragraph 4) An example of textual analysis is when you analyzed the term "Redneck Agenda" that had been previously mentioned in the essay. "The 'Redneck Agenda' might also be referring to another favorite punching bag that Armstrong hits in many other songs on the album (most notibly 'Jesus of Suburbia'), the religious right wing of the conservative party." (page 4, paragraph 1) An example of word analysis is when you analyzed the word, "faggot". "while the word 'faggot' is a slang, derogatory term for a homosexual, it has also been used to define anyone who refuses to fight or be 'manly'". (page 3, paragraph 3) An example of a sentence analysis...
