...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays Week One Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. One situation that comes immediately to mind is the phenomenon of climate change we are currently dealing with and how we are woefully unprepared to cope with it. If critical and/or creative thought had been used by all concerned, instead of fear and denial, we would be in a better position to handle and curtail these climate changes. When the data that pointed to human-induced climate change first was made public, it seemed that fear and hysteria was the common theme in most discussions of the problem. It has gotten better in recent years but it may be a case of too little, too late. It is important to think critically and creatively because it helps you to see the whole picture. When you think critically, all sides of the problem such as history, a source, a context are considered making a realistic and effective solution to a problem more likely. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Explain how we use them to form thoughts. What role does each play in critically assessing situations? We have free will when we have the freedom of self-determination, action and ability to make choices. If the choice is consistent with a person's desires and nature then it is representative of a person’s...

...“ why essay writing is hard ?” For many people writing is frustrating and many students have trouble writing anything. Sometimes students take extra lessons to just be a good. We all know how boring writing an essay can be and how hard to make a good one. In this essay I will talk about the difficulties we face while writing essays. The main reason that makes writing hard is that we focus on the external rewards like getting A or just to get the professor’s approval , and when you focus on getting these things your brain stops being creative and come up with ideas so that’s why it becomes boring . However that means when you are trying to write a perfect essay but in the same time thinking of getting an A , that will make you stop being creative in writing . Another good reason is lack of focus. Many students when they start writing ,their mind starts thinking about a lot of information . After that they forget about writing and start to think about their life or something happened to them in the past , so when they go back to writing they forget everything and they delete what they wrote to start again. Beside its being lack of focus it’s a waste of time too. The last reason is a bad environment. Some people love writing in a specific place in their room , they think their creative ideas are born there , and some people can’t just bring a pen and a paper to write because they are used to write in their computer . Others can write when its quiet, loud, or at any time of...

Student name: Phan Si Bao Cuong Student ID: L9920929 Date: 4/7/2013 In the business world today, creative thinking is one of the most indispensable elements that involve in whether companies can attain success. There is no doubt that thinking differently has brought many advantages to the success of businesses. Creativity can be defined as an ability people use to produce fresh ideas (Mattiske 2010). Bills and Genasi (2003) go further and suggest that people should force themselves to throw the traditional way of thinking away to form new ideas or even unique method to alter their future. The quality of products can be improved if inventiveness is boosted in office. Steve Jobs states that applying attractive ideas and new technologies to the process of doing business can help companies develop and flourish. One key point is that the value of products can be enhanced if creative thinking is promoted in the workplace. If business owners encouraged their staff to think differently, this could result in the competition between employees so they try to produce new ideas that can...

...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essay l and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essay A situation of public interest that comes to mind is legalizing marijuana. So many people thing that legalizing it is a great thing because of health reasons but what about what kids think about it. Some people feel that legalizing marijuana should have a more critical thought process to it. Some children feel that since marijuana is becoming legal in so many states “because of medical reasons,” they think that it is ok to smoke. Not only is it not ok it is illegal, in the way that they are using it. Children think that it is their free will (make unimpeded choices) to smoke marijuana because it is accepted by society. It is the children opinions (their thoughts not factual) that smoking marijuana is the “cool” thing to do. Truth – fact or belief that is accepted as true Knowledge – familiarity and awareness Three hindrances in critical thinking are: problem solving, making decisions that benefit everyone, not just you and good thinking strategies. A way to overcome some of these obstacles is to slow down and do not be so quick to respond. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and think of the choices based on what the outcome would be as a whole. A message in advertising that some people struggle with is the lost weight advertising. It gives people the thought that if they take these pills or eat this certain meal that they will instantly lose weight...

...Project-Reflective Essay As I look back at the writings I have created in these past few years, I realize that other than my junior year, I haven't written any narrative pieces, in any classes. The focus throughout my high school curriculum has been toward argumentative, analysis, and informative writings. Only in my junior year did I write my first creative writings in the form of a short story and a poem. The first creative writing I had to write a "Vomit" Draft. A vomit draft was the very first draft of a paper with little to no guidelines. "Bring two minutes to life" was the only instruction. We had to throw down 500 words without paying any real attention to punctuation or grammar. This kind of freedom associated with such creative writing was an alien concept to me. Getting used to writing without a structure that we had to follow, without a set of guidelines we had to abide by took a while. But, this kind of writing really helped me learn and improve, not just my writings, my organization and my time management skills as well. Knowing that I had to write such a demanding paper (it turned out to be fourteen pages longs), I had to improve my time management skills, which, up till junior year, hadn’t really been a challenge. Forcing myself then, to distribute time wisely has really helped me now, with the terrific pressures and burdens of college applications. This creative writing segment in my junior year helped my prepare, in a way, for these college essays. It gave me...

...Critical Thinking Student Development Unit 2005/06 [pic] [pic] Welcome! This booklet contains all the handouts and information that you will need for the Critical Thinking workshop held at the Student Development Unit. As well as the exercises we’ll be working on during the session, you will also find guidance that you can keep for future reference, such as advice on active learning and intelligence, models for critical thinking skills, and questions to help you think critically. When you are asked to complete an academic assignment, your tutor will be looking for evidence of these three skills: • Gathering of complex material • Making sense of that complex material • Communicating your understanding of that complex material to an informed reader.[1] The ‘making sense’ stage is the one we tend to neglect out of fear that we may not have anything of value to contribute. But, as the eminent thinker Edward De Bono puts it: ‘Thinking is a skill that can be improved by training, by practice and through learning how to do it better. Thinking is no different from any other skill and we can get better at the skill of thinking if we have the will to do so.’[2] We hope that this handbook will help you to develop strongly argued and well-structured pieces of work, and encourage you to build critical thinking into every aspect of your academic life. Be prepared to make some changes to how you work – if you always...

...Businesses need to invest in creative thinking if they want to be successful With the rapid development of global economy, creative thinking is playing more important role in the global economic competition due to the fact that traditional ways can hardly keep up with the pace of increasing complexities and differentiated needs. As a result ,This essay will discuss the necessity and importance of creative thinking for success in business. Serrat (2009) argues that human resource is the most important factor to produce creativity and the world will remain the original level without innovation. This is especially true when we look back the history of social developments that illustrates new ideas and innovative products are produced by some employers with creative thinking skills. Therefore, companies should invest substantial money in training programs in order to encourage employees to develop the awareness and ability of innovative thinking. It is also important for executives to recruit experienced professionals by offering more attractive payment, and to make some specific plans like some themed activities to foster creativity of the employees. What is more, upgrading and reorganizing the working environment is also one the most effective and common ways adopted by many international giants to stimulate employees’ passion and creativity. For instance, Google has been voted as the best workplace in many countries like Canada and India. However, micro-kitchens, tech...

...write easily and well, but they do not feel an overwhelming need to. As it happens, however, writing essays is one of the best ways to develop the mental skills necessary for learning and thinking. Despite the widely held belief that human beings are rational animals, the fact is that we are no such thing--at least not naturally. What we are is capable of rational thought. We have the capacity to learn how to reason, but that capacity does not come to fruition without careful nurturing. Just as the skilled athlete has, through diligent effort and application, honed physical capacities that are inherent but not well developed in most human beings, so the skilled thinker has studied and trained himself to apply mental skills in a manner beyond the reach of most untrained minds. The exercise of rational thought or procedure to analyze a subject and to express in an orderly way the judgments arrived at through such analysis is called "discourse." Writing which aims to arrive at an understanding of a subject--or to make such an understanding possible for the reader by leading him through the steps of rational analysis of that subject--is called "discursive" writing. Virtually all of the writing required of a student in high school or college should be discursive, and it is a truly unfortunate trend that highly personal and so-called "creative" writing has often been allowed to replace discursive writing in much of the curriculum. The function of training...

...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays Joshua T Lemmerman PHL/458 April - 13 - 2015 Matthew Fallesen Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays A couple months back there was a gentleman by the name of Eric Garner. This man was from New York and got into an altercation with police. Eric Garner was no angel, but he was not complying with the police officers. One of the police was given an order to subdue the gentleman via chokehold. Eric had asthma and the chokehold ultimately ended his life. Now the public is completely appalled and sickened by events like these. We are not police and sometimes we do not understand how hard their job really is. This situation could have had a completely different outcome if the police had actually had a critical and creative thought process before the chokehold order was given. It is hard because the police did not know this man was asthmatic, but they went off instinct and were trying to detain the gentleman from moves they have been taught. The police in this situation did not use critical thinking to their advantage. Instead they trusted the orders that they had been given. This entire situation could have been avoided by simple critical and creative thinking. They did not evaluate the issue in order to form their judgment. There was no evaluation thought at all, just the simple fact that they were given the order to use excessive force and it cost Mr. Garner his life. If the police would have been able to...
