...Creative thinking is the ability to imagine or invent something new (Harris, 1998). It has the ability to accept change and newness and a motivation to play with thoughts and possibilities. To think creatively an individual has to think outside of the box. Creative thinking is a skill that allows individuals to work through problems and find solutions that others may have not considered. If one does not believe that he or she can think creatively then one will have trouble with the process of creative thinking. Within creative thinking he or she will have ability, attitude, and a process (Harris, 1998). Everyone has the ability to be creative substantially they need is to take time and make a commitment for it. Attitude in creativity is the ability to accept change and newness, a willingness to play with possibilities and ideas. The process for creative individuals is to work hard and continually to improve solutions and ideas. The creative person knows that there is always room for improvement. A workplace example of creative, logical, and persuasive thinking occurred when the department was planning the save a life tour. We had to start out creative in how we would keep the attention of four hundred junior and senior high school students and know that we were leaving an impact on the choices they will be accountable for during the rest of their lives. After several conversations during our group meetings we put in our logical thinking to make the best decision possible of...

...Creative Thinking Name HUM/111 April 28, 2013 Yasmeen Thomas Creative Thinking Of all the political issues present in our country today, the issue of Gay Marriage is one that everyone has an opinion on. There are very few people who will ever say, “I have no opinion.” They may not want to express their opinion, but everyone will have an opinion on this topic. The Gay Marriage debate is explosive because it touches several hot buttons: religion, civil rights, homosexuality, homophobia, race and hatred. In order to properly address this issue we have to consider all sides of the issue. Not just the issue itself, but how each side feels about the issue. We have to ask if their opinions are valid or emotional. We have to ascertain whether their feelings are based on universal truths or religious fervor. By considering all sides we may come up with multiple solutions. We can also put ourselves in the opponent’s shoes and try to argue against ourselves so we can see what the other side sees. We can also take the position of an onlooker to judge the situation impartially. In a topic like this there is rarely one solution. More likely, it will be a series of imaginative compromises that will ultimately take place. As Alfred North Whitehead warned, “Fools act on imagination without knowledge; pedants act on knowledge without imagination.” Living creative means combining knowledge and imagination (Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, 2012). In order to bring groups together...

...both think. Potentially this would give me the ability to use creative thinking rather than critical analysis. Creative thinking can break down the typical way of viewing things, and in this particular situation could provide you with a more open mind when dealing with the particular details so you can reach a more rounded outlook. In the case of a political topic I think this can be very important. Especially when it comes to getting rid of bias when dealing with a serious topic. The main strategy I would use when it comes to promoting curiosity in the topic is to find something that people are interested in whether it be good or bad, and then provide a fact or idea that they may grow curious about. If it's something that someone wants to know more about, or is involved enough in to go seek out what I’ve written about it then it's provoking curiosity, and potentially leading them to information they hadn't bothered to review before. I think these strategies are effective because I’ve seen it work before, especially in academic writing. Providing a debatable idea will lead people towards the topic, or at the very least more facts about it so they can have steady ground to debate on. I could also provide information, or a topic that will move people to look for more information for a naturally curious desire instead of just to debate. I think this is the most difficult thing because even when you provoke creative...

...c. Use correct APA, MLA, or Turabian style. Content: Instructions: o Fulfill all of the requirements as listed above. o Select 1 of the following worldviews (Secular Humanism, Hinduism, Buddhism, or Islam) that have been considered in the course content. o Identify the worldview that you have selected on your Title page (APA, MLA, or Turabian). o Using course content and additional sources outside of the course, complete the following: Note: This is a “Critical Thinking” assignment so you must go beyond just giving factual content, and demonstrate your comprehension of the material. To accomplish this, the assignment will be asking you to “compare and contrast” your selected worldview (Secular Humanism, Hinduism, Buddhism, or Islam) with the biblical worldview. • Compare: To speak of or represent as similar; to liken. • Contrast: To set in opposition … in order to show strikingly their different qualities or characteristics, and compare their superiorities or defects. In your paper, you must follow the outline and answer the questions below. How would the worldview that you selected answer these 5 worldview questions: 1. The Question of Origin – (How did life begin? How did mankind come into existence?) i. How would your selected worldview answer this question? ii. Compare and Contrast this with how the biblical worldview would answer this question. 2. The Question of Identity – (What does it mean to be human? Are humans more important than animals?) ...

...Through the activity, I realized how silly it was to work against my usual steps based methodology in order to create a creative collage. My initial intention of going without a plan was to not limit myself within the boundaries of an outline so that I can freely decide on materials that I think would fit in my collage. This resulted in me just blindly looking for images that would represent MediaCorp but do not portray the lack of creativity in the industry. Reflecting on it, I could have used the systematic approach in a way that would not limit my material gathering. Creativity is an abstract topic and to represent it in a collage would be difficult. By brain storming and coming up with a plan on how to represent the topic, I could have saved time on the search for new cut outs half way through the collage making. Having a plan beforehand will not limit the materials that I can gather as long as I do not rigidly follow the plan down to every single detail but instead use it as a guideline. The efficiency enhancing methodologies do not limit creativity, most of the time it is the wrong usage of such methods that is the culprit. This point is supported by an interview with Dr. Larry Wending, vice president of the 3M’s research department, made in a Business Week article by Brian Hindo (2007). "In some cases in the lab it made sense, but in other cases, people were going around dreaming up green-belt programs to fill their quota of green-belt programs for that time...

...Critical and creative thinking is regaining its popularity in the global education scene. This resurgence in popularity can be attributed to the demands of the evolving economic, political, social and technological world in the 21st century. The competitiveness of the global market demands corporations to constantly innovate. To do so, corporations need employees who are able to think critically and creatively. Barren of natural resources, Singapore depends on its human population for economic survival. Education then becomes a key instrument in promoting the state’s economic development. In 1959, the Ministry of Education issued a report, asserting that, ‘the government’s education policy is designed to equip the youth of the State with requisite skills, aptitudes and attitudes for employment in industry’, and it has not changed since then. So, as we move into the 21st century, the government has termed critical and creative thinking as skills that all students should develop within themselves. The education system acts an agent to instill such skills in the younger generation. The objective of this paper is to discuss the possibility of facilitating the development of critical and creative thinking among students in the current Singapore education system. So, we shall begin this paper by introducing the concepts of critical and creative thinking. Next, we shall study factors in the current Singapore education system that influence the development of critical and creative thinking...

...Critical and Creative Thinking PHL/ 458 Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. Recently, Facebook has force its users to download a separate messenger application that is supposedly to give user a faster way to send messages to other users directly from application instead from the current Facebook application. The creative thought was to have instant/real time access to communicate with other Facebook users. With the new application it forces Facebook to have access to your phone (i.e. Camera, contacts and even what you search in google). The messenger s has closed the gap on traveling long distances to meet with someone face to face or the delivery of a letter. That right now, instant access to whomever to transact personal or business with your customers or loved ones has evolved into a right now/instant way to communicate. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Explain how we use them to form thoughts. What role does each play in critically assessing situations? Free will is defined as voluntarily; independently. Truth is a reality or a fact. Knowledge is the Familiarity and Information. Opinion can be define as the Belief; point of view; advice We use our own thoughts and judgments to coincide with each and every idea or thought we formulate. Whether right or wrong...

Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. The story that really jumps out to me is the Ebola virus that has been hitting our country. When introduced to us we saw the bad affects of the situation hitting and that we should be scared. The news gave little no information about what they knew accept for the dangers. Know lets say that they gave this creative thought about how they would present this to people. I would think that things would have been different. Like giving people preventive measures to survive and how to out last the situation. It is so important to think critical on times like these because often people fear the worse and dictate how they live there life’s on information that they hear. When being in the public eye and a voice to the ear of the people. ...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essay l and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essay A situation of public interest that comes to mind is legalizing marijuana. So many people thing that legalizing it is a great thing because of health reasons but what about what kids think about it. Some people feel that legalizing marijuana should have a more critical thought process to it. Some children feel that since marijuana is becoming legal in so many states “because of medical reasons,” they think that it is ok to smoke. Not only is it not ok it is illegal, in the way that they are using it. Children think that it is their free will (make unimpeded choices) to smoke marijuana because it is accepted by society. It is the children opinions (their thoughts not factual) that smoking marijuana is the “cool” thing to do. Truth – fact or belief that is accepted as true Knowledge – familiarity and awareness Three hindrances in critical thinking are: problem solving, making decisions that benefit everyone, not just you and good thinking strategies. A way to overcome some of these obstacles is to slow down and do not be so quick to respond. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and think of the choices based on what the outcome would be as a whole. A message in advertising that some people struggle with is the lost weight advertising. It gives people the thought that if they take these pills or eat this certain meal that they will instantly lose weight...

...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays Week One Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. One situation that comes immediately to mind is the phenomenon of climate change we are currently dealing with and how we are woefully unprepared to cope with it. If critical and/or creative thought had been used by all concerned, instead of fear and denial, we would be in a better position to handle and curtail these climate changes. When the data that pointed to human-induced climate change first was made public, it seemed that fear and hysteria was the common theme in most discussions of the problem. It has gotten better in recent years but it may be a case of too little, too late. It is important to think critically and creatively because it helps you to see the whole picture. When you think critically, all sides of the problem such as history, a source, a context are considered making a realistic and effective solution to a problem more likely. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Explain how we use them to form thoughts. What role does each play in critically assessing situations? We have free will when we have the freedom of self-determination, action and ability to make choices. If the choice is consistent with a person's desires and nature then it is representative of a person’s...

...1. Have you ever changed a strongly held attitude? What caused the change for you? In our everyday lives, attitudes play a major role in affecting our behavior. The influence how we feel and behave toward others is in our environment. Attitudes have important influences on our decisions. The most commonly used approach in changing attitude is to attempt to change what people believe and what they know. Attitudes are often learned from other people and are often a defining characteristic of groups. It can also be genetic. A strong attitude is very resistant to change. To change attitude, spot and match the balance of affective/cognitive/behavioral components, especially in the person’s self-image. Where there is affective attention, offer emotional arguments. For cognitive listeners, use a rational argument. For the behaviorally focused, do something. 2. Have you ever done something in a group that you would not have done if you were alone? What happened? How did you feel? What have you learned from this chapter that might help you avoid this behavior in the future? 3. How do Milgrams results- particularly the finding that the remoteness of the victim affected obedience- relate to some aspects of modern warfare? 4. What are some of the similarities between Zimbardio's prison study and the abuses at the Abu Ghralb prison in Iraq? 5. Do you believe that you are free of prejudice? ...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays PHL/458 December 1, 201X XXX Introduction Critical and creative thinking are an important part of everyday life. First, this paper will describe a situation of public interest in which these could have been used for a better outcome. Next, it will define free will, truth, knowledge and opinion, how they are used to form thoughts and the role they play in critically assessing situations. It will also identify three hindrances to the critical thinking process with an experience. Lastly, it will identify a message in advertising, how it was perceived, and the reality of the advertisement and distinguish between perception and the reality of the message. Situation of Public Interest The current situation of public interest that will be discussed is the selling of swastika ridden wrapping paper by Walgreens. Walgreens was carrying the wrapping paper in celebration of Hanukkah when customers started to notice the swastikas. This is clearly offensive to the Jewish community who would be purchasing the wrapping paper. As a result the product has been pulled from the shelves (Huffington Post, 2014). This situation could have been avoided if a quality assurance individual or product reviewer was consulted. It is those individuals job to review the product and gage how consumers will perceive the product. The review process should include a checklist with critical thinking questions one it. One example would be...

...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society PHL458 Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Free will is the ability to use critical and creative thinking to approach problems to make an educated choice in what directive or direction to take (Ruggiero, 2012, Chapter 2). The textbook states that some psychologists would argue there is no free will, only compulsion as defines as the irresistible urge to do something. The textbook author, Ruggiero, states that although we are influenced by both nature and nurture, we retain a significant amount of free will to make choices (Ruggiero, 2012, Chapter 2). According to Ruggiero (2012) truth is what is so about something, the reality of the matter, as distinguished from what people wish were so, believe to be so, or assert to be so (Chapter 2). The truth is not relative nor does truth change; only one's perception of what is truth changes. If truth were relative, no one would seek out the answers as any answer could be considered truth. Perception can be relative; truth is the view that is fated to be ultimately agreed to by all who investigate (Ruggiero, 2012, Chapter 2). Knowledge is what we know, not what we think we know (Ruggiero, 2012, Chapter 2). We can find true knowledge from experience, observation and report. All three of these methods of obtaining knowledge are subject to the failure of faulty experience, faulty experience, faulty reporting and faulty memory. One may feel he is knowledgeable on a subject, only to...

Instead of an executive order consisting of one man’s thoughts, the situation could have been brought to congress to debate a better outcome. An outcome that helped identify individuals that posed a credible threat rather than detaining an entire ethnic group of people. Similar situations would also benefit from debates among many rather than decisions made among few. Free will is a voluntary decision; free and independent choice. (dictionary.com, 2014) Truth is the actual state of a matter. (dictionary.com, 2014) Knowledge is the fact or state of knowing. (dictionary.com, 2014) Opinion is a personal view, attitude, or appraisal. (dictionary.com, 2014) Free will allows us the freedom and ability to form thoughts and think critically. Truth is the information that we seek to help form our thoughts and to be able to effectively think critically using facts. Knowledge is what we have or have gained from using truth and thinking critically. Opinion is the state of thoughts and ideas that we have and the conclusions that we make using the knowledge that we have gained from thinking critically. Many hindrances get in the way of critical thinking. Three that I can think of are emotion, self-centered thinking, and prejudices.
