Chanting, all I could hear was chanting. I walked to my dorm window and peered out. Thousands of kids were walking on our campus. I knew what it was for. From the window, I could clearly see two guys holding up a banner. It read, “Against The War!” Most people were chanting but others were stomping, like an army or something…. odd.

I yawned and turned around so my back was facing the protesters. Walking to my dresser, I pondered. Should I join them? I shook the thought as I remembered what kind of trouble I could get in. Here at Berkeley, the officials banned political solicitations for any civil right movements. If I didn't know this, the protesters would be like vultures to ensure I knew this.

Somehow, I got here, at U.C. Berkeley, …show more content…
We were engulfed in silence beside the protesters and their never ending chanting. Kenneth was right. There is always an easier way, but Danielle had a point too. After ten minutes, Kenneth spoke up and faced Danielle and me,

“I prefer conscientious objector Danielle.”

I broke out in a contagious laughter that brought all three of us to tears. “I swear you two will kill each other next time,” I said as I got off the curb and onto my feet.

“No way! Me and Kenny boy go way back,” said Danielle while lightly punching Kenneth on the shoulder.

“Yea Jack, you know us was better than that,” Kenneth stood up as well and dusted himself off.

I sighed and took one last look at the rally, then turned my back towards them as I had done in my dorm.

“Let's go to the eat-in down the street, i'm hungry after that dispute,” I said to the both of them.

“All you did was sit and listen!” Danielle said exasperatedly.

“That's all he does, eat, breath, and listen,” Kenneth rolled his eyes. “Do we really have to go to the eat-in? I swear the woman there stares at me and it gives me the creeps.”

Danielle and I walked off laughing as Kenneth dragged his feet behind us.

“Be glad you have an admirer!” I told Kenneth as we laughed our way to

Segregation: an Issue of the Past?

...towards the end of the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that those who were once slaves were to be set free; however much more than a document would be needed to diminish the ideas and attitudes white people continued to hold onto. Into the 1960’s, one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclaimed was written, African Americans were still suffering from inequality and discrimination. The need to end racial segregation and discrimination sparked the build up to The Civil Rights Movement. Like society, literary trends started to focus on racism and prejudice. In particular, the principled southern-bred writer Langston Hughes shows social injustices and racial prejudice in his writings because he experienced the culture first hand. His poems became the voice for African American’s because he clearly depicts the emotions they felt during this time. Literature as a whole grasped the public’s attention towards The Civil Rights Movement to show the importance of social equality. Langston Hughes’ poems “Merry-Go-Round” and “Dreams” express how necessary it is to put segregation in the past, and encourage African Americans to stay hopeful in order to reach their dream of living in a racially equal America. The Civil Rights Movement was victorious because many African Americans did not get discouraged and lose spirit, but instead properly fought to change the peoples’ mindset by demonstrating unity and nonviolent tactics. During the Civil Rights Movement, it was easy for African...

Martin Luther King's Civil Disobedience

...time, then when would it be considered a wise and timely point in history to do so? African Americans experienced over 340 years of oppression, segregation, and utmost hatred toward their race in America. In Birmingham, Alabama, the most segregated community in the country, Dr. King viewed more hatred toward his people than anywhere else. In his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” he did not seek to solve all issues through writing, but to give the “white man” a general consensus of the situation and seek their understanding, not only as a civil rights advocate, but as a “Clergyman and Christian Brother.” The African-American community sought to negotiate peacefully with the city fathers, but they refused. The question then arose: Why they did not turn to violent action after the constant failure of nonviolent negotiation? Dr. King understood that, “Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue,” otherwise meaning that the only way civil disobedience can be successful is if the oppressor recognizes it as a volatile action against their past actions. If the African...

Zadie Smith Speaking In Tongues Summary

...The United States has a disappointing history of treating minorities, or non-whites, with apathetic behavior. The Civil Rights Movement, which has roots in the 19th century and peaked in the 1960s, reversed the trend and granted African Americans with anti-discriminatory legislation. Because of this, almost every minority within the country has followed the Civil Rights Movement as a guide for achieving equal treatment. In her essay, “Speaking in Tongues”, Zadie Smith outlines the differences of those with a single voice, or the native dialect, versus people who utilize a multitude of voices. Furthermore, this relates to the Civil Rights Movement because the leaders who were “lettered” had their own voice in addition to other voices which provided...
