Every nine years seven boys and seven girls were sacrificed. Every nine years 14 kids were murdered by a horrendous monster. Every nines years nobody did anything about it. So he decided this was it. And he volunteered.
“Let me take his place! I will sail to Crete and face this monster.” People all around gasped at this sudden outburst. Confused whispers and murmurs could be heard as they all asked, “Prince Theseus?” “Can he save our children?” Theseus, the Prince of Athens, stood bravely and confidently in front of the people as the quiet whispers continued to grow louder. He slowly walked to the trembling young boy and told him to go to his parents. “I will sail to the island of Crete and save each of your children from death.”

“Here is a ball of thread. Tie this to the entrance of the maze and unravel it as you make your way through the confusing pathways. That way, you’ll be able to find your way back after you defeat the minotaur with this. This was only sword I could steal, but it should do. Good luck!”
Before Theseus could say thanks, she was gone. That night, Theseus couldn’t sleep. All he could think about was the monster that he would soon have to face.
Suddenly, a loud bang awoke Theseus from his short nap. A guard stood outside, banging on the door with his fist while trying to get the keys with his other hand. Once he got the door open, Theseus stepped forward, the thread and sword hidden in his toga. “Are you volunteering to die first?” the guard said with a slight chuckle.
“Well, might as well get it over with, right?” At that comment, the guard rolled his eyes and grabbed Theseus by the arm, leading him down a long, stone hallway barely lit with fire here and there. At last, they reached the huge entrance to the maze, faint sounds of the minotaur’s whining echoing off the …show more content…
Soon, he could hear the loud breathing coming from the animal as he walked closer to the center of the maze. Theseus could now hear stomping against the stone floor, little shakes in the ground beneath his feet, and a bit of fear in his body. As Theseus slowly turned the corner, he came face to face with the horrendous creature in front of him. The head of a bull and body of a man. Large horns sticking out the sides of his head, slobber slowly dripping from his mouth filled with sharp teeth, and hooves slowly stomping the ground. Theseus quickly pulled the sword out of his toga and charged at the minotaur. After minutes of incredible bravery from Theseus, the minotaur had finally been killed, now lying dead on the cold, stone

Eva Ibbotson - a Company of Swans

...A Company of Swans Chapter One There was no lovelier view in England, Harriet knew this. To her right, the soaring towers of King's College Chapel and the immaculate lawns sloping down to the river's edge; to her left, the blue and gold of the scillas and daffodils splashed in rich abundance between the trees of the Fellows' Gardens. Yet as she leaned over the stone parapet of the bridge on which she stood, her face was pensive and her feet— and this was unusual in the daughter of a professor of classics in the year 1912— were folded in the fifth position. She was a thin girl, brown-haired and brown-eyed, whose gravity and gentleness could not always conceal her questing spirit and eagerness for life. Sensibly dressed in a blue caped coat and tarn o'shanter bought to last, a leather music case propped against the wall beside her, she was a familiar figure to the passers-by: to ancient Dr. Ferguson, tottering across the willow-fringed bridge in inner pursuit of an errant Indo-Germanic verb; to a gardener trimming the edges of the grass, who raised his cap to her. Professor Morton's clever daughter; Miss Morton's biddable niece. To grow up in Cambridge was to be fortunate indeed. To be able to look at this marvelous city each day was a blessing of which one should never tire. Harriet, crumbling bread into the water for the world's most blase ducks, had told herself this again and again. But it is not cities which make the destinies of eighteen-year-old girls, it is people— and...

...THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL : THE DEFINITIVE EDITION Anne Frank Edited by Otto H. Frank and Mirjam Pressler Translated by Susan Massotty -- : -BOOK FLAP Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl is among the most enduring documents of the twentieth century. Since its publication in 1947, it has been read by tens of millions of people all over the world. It remains a beloved and deeply admired testament to the indestructable nature of the human spirit. Restore in this Definitive Edition are diary entries that had been omitted from the original edition. These passages, which constitute 30 percent more material, reinforce the fact that Anne was first and foremost a teenage girl, not a remote and flawless symbol. She fretted about, and tried to copie with, her own emerging sexuality. Like many young girls, she often found herself in disagreement with her mother. And like any teenager, she veered between the carefree nature of a child and the full-fledged sorrow of an adult. Anne emerges more human, more vulnerable, and more vital than ever. Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi occupation, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse for two years. She was thirteen when the family went into the Secret Annex, and in these pages she grows to be a young woman and a wise observer of human nature as well. With unusual insight, she reveals the relations between eight people living under extraordinary conditions, facing hunger, the ever-present threat of discovery and death, complete...
