It was Tuesday afternoon when Peewee and Sammy set out for Winnie’s new home, which was three houses farther down the street. Winnie would be inside because the red-haired young girl who was her new owner was at school. But this day,
Winnie snuck out of the house when the cleaning lady came in the front door. Winnie was like her brother Bo. She liked adventure.
Winnie jumped around on the grass and looked for other kittens on the street to play with, but none of them were outside. After awhile, she looked across the street and saw woods. All those trees. Maybe there was someone over there to play with.
Minutes later, in the woods, she saw a snake. “Hi, I’m Winnie. What’s your name”?
“I’m Slither,” he hissed.

“Run down the sidewalk, Winnie” said Peewee. When your friend gets off the bus, she’ll see you.”
The bus stopped and the girl with red hair jumped down each step as if she was playing hopscotch. “Winnie, what are you doing outside”? she asked. “Come on. Let’s go home.”
Peewee watched until Winnie was at the front door. Right before she went in, she turned and winked at her big brother. Peewee was shaking. Whew! Another close call. Peewee looked around for Sammy. He spotted him on the sidewalk on the other side of the street and waved for him to come over. “Thanks, Sammy. You were great.
You ran really fast—again. That old snake didn’t know what happened. You saved my little sister.”
Sammy looked like he was ready to cry. “Peewee, I don’t know if I can do this anymore. You do scary stuff. What’s it going to be tomorrow? A fox? A raccoon? Are you trying to get me killed”?

Peewee’s eyes popped wide open. “Oh,Sammy. I am so sorry for putting you in danger. I understand if you don’t want to come to Mo’s house tomorrow.”
