...ENGLISH HANDBOOK -“Welcome to my evil lair…” -Mr. Braiman Brooklyn High School of the Arts www.mrbraiman.com http://handbook.mrbraiman.com “EVIL” Welcome to my evil classroom lair. In order to become full-fledged evil “minions,” you need to read this handbook carefully. It explains everything you need to know. “English,” as you may know, is shorthand for “English Language Arts.” Being that we are in an Arts school, but one where academics must and always do come first, it is important that we approach the subject as what it is: an art form. How does one study the arts? What exactly do we do when we study drawing, sculpture, music, or dance? Well, anyone who has studied the arts will tell you that studying the arts essentially involves two things: • Learning about, and developing an awareness of and appreciation for, existing works of art in that particular form; • Developing the skills and techniques associated with the art form, in order to create our own works. In the case of language arts, much like any other art form, we will be studying existing works of art (i.e., reading books, stories and poems), and developing the skills to produce our own (i.e., writing). That’s what English Language Arts is. We will also be preparing ourselves for New York State’s Regents Comprehensive Examination in English, which we’ll all be taking in June. This two-day, six-hour, four-part exam requires no specific knowledge or content, but it does require the skills to listen, read,...

American's Should Not Use Credit Cards

...Nilson Report, February 2010, the average credit card debt per household with credit card debt is $15,788 and the number of credit cards held per family is 3.5. This issue has destroyed many lives and keeps causing problems among many American’s today.” It is my personal opinion that credit card usage ought to be reserved for people who have a high income and who reliably make a lot of money. Personal credit card debt doubled in the past four years and personal bankruptcies are at the highest rates ever and still more Americans are spending money that they do not have. There is a potential dark side to plastic with some unfortunate account holders getting out of their depth and building up debts that become a problem and cause of worry Credit Cards have become a problem for most Americans credit card users and there are even cases that students commit suicide because of heavy debts they owe the credit card companies (Manning, 2000) By paying with cash, you can “feel” the money leaving, which is not true with credit cards, where upon flipping a credit card up on a counter, leaves you feeling nothing emotionally.   Just as credit cards encourage overpaying for an item, they also allow individuals to buy more than budgeted. First, the charges by most of the credit card companies are rather exorbitant. Apart from   that these credit card companies charge their customers on the use and withdrawals of money with the cards, the credit card companies also charge their customers...

...to be one and have learnt from my reading that modern entrepreneurs have all worked to use technology for the betterment of our lives. Therefore, I decided long ago to study engineering and did not miss any opportunities to learn how the machines in our everyday life worked. In my school days, I used to listen to audio cassettes on a tape recorder. When I learnt the difference between mono and stereo recording, I thought of converting two mono recorded audio cassettes into a single stereo cassette, recorded in mono mode using the cassette's LEFT and RIGHT channels as a separate channels, to be heard in sequence, not together. To my delight, the idea worked and resulted in compacting two cassettes into a single mono cassette. With good scores in the science subjects, I could choose the engineering stream to take up for Bachelors. I chose Electronics & Telecommunication, because of its wide, interdisciplinary span and the ever increasing use of electronics in every branch of modern science, from Astrophysics to Medicine. It is a field rich with opportunities for an entrepreneur. The curriculum of University of Pune introduced me to the basics of several subjects, such as Digital Signal Processing, Integrated Circuit Application, Computer Networks, Digital Communication, System Programming and Operating Systems and application of theories in practice through lab work and team projects. Presently, I am studying in the final semester of the Bachelors program. Though technological...
