Creon: An Effective Leader In Sophocles Antigone

Creon is an oppressive leader in the tragedy Antigone by Sophocles. From time to time, Creon shows sympathy for Antigone. When Creon leads his people he often abuses the power. Creon is often described as a tyrant and a good leader. Creon’s actions often portray his decision of being a tyrant or a good leader. The actions for Creon being a tyrant is when he doesn’t bury Polyneices. Actions showing qualities of a good leader is when he reduces the sentence for Antigone. Creon has a chance of being a good leader that has a heart. His actions hurt his chances of becoming a good leader. Creon’s actions show a desire to preserve and protect his country, but his actions also show him lusting his power. Creon has the potential to Throughout the tragedy, Creon shows two sides of himself. Creon shows his side of being a tyrant when he doesn’t want to bury Polyneices. When Creon hears about Polyneice’s death, he makes the executive decision to not have Polyneices buried. Antigone hears the news and buries her brother. Creon hears the news and is outraged. When Creon hears it was a girl he begins to think of punishments for Antigone. Creon’s actions throughout …show more content…
When Creon decides to not let Polyneices be buried properly it shows a desire to preserve and protect his country. His desire to protect his country is shown here because if he buries Polyneices it shows that he respects thieves. He doesn’t want to repeat the past and go through another war. Another way Creon shows his desire to preserve and protect his country is when Creon gives his original punishment to Antigone. Creon gave a harsh punishment to Antigone because he doesn’t want to look weak to the people of his country. Creon isn’t the person who would want to look weak. No matter how fast, far or rich, how ruthless, mercenary or arrogant – it seems we can’t get enough. The question is, are we creating heroes or monsters? In the play Antigone, Sophocles draws Creon as an autocratic dictator, interested only in political order and public obedience to the state. His stubbornness renders him unable to feel the injustice of his decree and ultimately rewards his blindness with personal tragedy. Could it be that Sophocles is asking us to question the qualities of unwavering focus, resolve and commitment – celebrated by many as being vital attributes of effective leadership (Avolio, 1999)? Qualities which in the case of Creon, may also be categorised as sociopathic or even psychopathic (Babiak & Hare, 2006). Sub-clinical socio/psychopathic traits such as narcissism, impulsivity, superiority, low-empathy and self-promotion are ironically also those that may assist individuals in rising to the top of the corporate or government ladder (Boddy, 2009).
