Criminal Code and Crime Statistics Activity

1. Canada’s first Criminal Code is rooted in the common law of England. As by the 18th century, England did not have any written criminal law, it involved into an endless pit of difficult case laws, petty anachronistic, harsh trails and punishments. The first criminal code was not unified and clear according to Sir John A. MacDonald. He believed that we would be shocked today at some of its provisions. Severe punishments such as whipping for any offence was rewarded. 2. Current Criminal Code is based on the changes to accommodate the needs to changing times. Most of the laws are changed by time to bring ease for the citizens of the country. Some of the laws such as birth control and abortion was seen as a crime until 1988. But there are many changes to the law today, the law contains some 28 parts which includes a range of offences from s. 49 “intending to alarm her majesty” to s. 71 (C) “accepts a challenge to fight a duel” to very serious offences such as murder. In section 2 of the Code, simple terms are given a far more complex definition. 3. Indictable Offences are more serious offences such as aggravated assault. 4. Summary Conviction Offences are less serious offences such as water skiing at night, common assault, or theft under a certain amount. 5. Hybrid offences includes a wide range of offence that may include indictable or summary conviction offences at the option of the crown. A number of trail options are given to the accused dependent to their charges, whether its a summary conviction or indictable offence Part | Section Number(s) and Name of the Offence | Type of Offence (Indictable,Summary, Hybrid) | Sentence | Part II— Offences Against Public Order | Sections 46 and 47, High Treason | Indictable | Life Imprisonment | Part II— Piracy | Section 74 | Indictable | Life

Defense Of Provocation: The 1899 Queensland Criminal Code

...The defence of provocation is covered in sections 268, 269 and 304 of the 1899 Queensland Criminal Code. Murder charges can be reduced to manslaughter with the successful application of this defence, assault charges can be fully absolved through this defence (Caxton Legal Centre , 2016). The defence of provocation is a common topic of debate as the legislation can be seen to contradict the values and morals of society in many ways. The impact of this inconsistency between legislation and societal views is outrage over verdicts which justify acts of aggression and support a victim blaming culture. This ‘ancient’ defence was established in the 16th or 17th century, during this period it was considered a cowardly act for a man to ignore an insult...

Criminal Code Amendment In Australia

...Questions have been raised about whether the Criminal Code Amendment (Animal Protection) Bill’s main purpose is really to enhance the protection of domestic animals or is it rather to protect the commercial and trading interests of the animal industries. These amendments would deter the investigators who have been extremely successful in exposing animal cruelty. Remarks have been made regarding the bill not being concerned with people who witness the animal cruelty firsthand, but only if one records or photographs malicious animal cruelty. The RSPCA has urged a federal senate committee in order to throw out the proposed bill. RSPCA Australia Policy Officer, Mr Jed Goodfellow has stated that this bill “is focused on the wrong people” he believes...

Icd-9-Cm E Code Supplementary Classification

...The ICD-9-CM E codes supplementary classification is located in the Tabular List of Diseases; they describe external causes of injury, poisoning, or other adverse reactions affecting a patient's health. ICD-9-CM E codes and ICD-10CM external codes (that begin with V-Y) are also reported for environmental events, industrial accidents, injuries inflicted by criminal activity, and so on. While assigning the codes does not directly impact reimbursement to the provider, reporting them can expedite insurance claims processing because the circumstances related to an injury are indicated. If the place of injury had been at a grocery store, or other place of business, the business's liability insurance would be billed instead of the patient's health...
