...According to AJ McCarron, The starting quarterback for the Alabama Crimson tide from 2011 to 2013, college football players should be paid because “In some way they’re (The NCAA) taking advantage of college athletes that sign their name to a certain school.” A few other reasons college football players should be paid is that they could get hurt and might not have enough money to get a good start on life after college, colleges have extra money for equipment, coaches, and fields, and college football players spend a lot of time playing their sport and don’t have time to get a full-time job. One reason that college football players should be paid is that they could get hurt and might not have enough money to get a good start on life after college. Health. US News says Former college football players were more than twice as likely to have physical problems that limited their daily activities and exercise. Sixty-seven percent of these former athletes said they had suffered a major injury. (“For Many College Athletes, the Payoff Is Lifelong Disabilities: Study”). These players focus all of their time on football, sometimes forty hours a week, and they blow out a knee, or roll an ankle, ruining their chance in the NFL. Shouldn’t they at least have a little money to cushion them out of college and get them on their feet? That’s the first reason college...

...Nick Saban If Nick Saban were running a company instead of a football program, he would be a top manager. Alabama football is big business, and it will continue to get bigger under Saban. “In 2006, the year before he arrived in Tuscaloosa, the athletic department brought in $67.7 million in revenue, mostly from football, and spent $60.6 million. Last year revenue was $124.5 million and expenditures were $105.1 million -- leaving a $19.4 million profit, according to figures compiled by USA Today. During Saban's tenure, Alabama has expanded the capacity of Bryant-Denny Stadium from 92,000 to 101,000, including the addition of new luxury (i.e., more expensive) seating”(O'Keefe, 2012). It was an obvious decision for the school to give him a two-year contract extension along with a significant raise earlier last year. With a salary package that averages $5.6 million a year over the next eight years, Saban is among the highest paid coaches in college football. “Nick Saban, the undisputed emperor of college football, has everything he could ever want in Tuscaloosa: Three national titles in four seasons; a great shot at another one a year from now; the best players; no static from anyone, including the browbeaten reporters who cover him; and the whole world kissing his feet”(Silver, 2013). Nick Saban is no doubt one of the best college football coaches in America. His passion, work ethic, persistence, and humility have got him to where he is today. These characteristics started when...

...football program at a very high level. Their cross-state rival, Auburn University, is located in Auburn, Alabama. With a recent National Championship win in 2010, Auburn University was ready to be a formidable opponent to the University of Alabama in the next few years. However, in the 2012 season the University of Alabama overpowered Auburn University in every aspect of the game. In the 2012 football season, the Alabama Crimson Tide fished the season number one in the AP poll and came home with a National Championship. The Crimson Tide ended the season with an almost perfect 13-1 record (7-1 in the SEC). The Tide’s only loss that season came to Texas A&M, a top SEC team led by their Heisman quarterback. The University of Alabama had nine players selected in the NFL draft with three players coming in the first round after the 2012 season. Alabama kept all of its coaches from this previous season. Nick Saban returned to the Tide in 2012 for his sixth season and finished with his third national championship. The recruiting class for Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide ranked number one in the nation in 2012. The class had a total of 13 players recruited in the ESPNU 150 which 3 would start for Alabama. The Auburn Tigers, Alabama’s most hated rival, on the other hand ended the 2012 football season in embarrassment to the school and fans. The Tigers completed the season with a humiliating 3-9 record (0-8 in the SEC) and didn’t even make a bowl game appearance. This was the worst season...

...the decision he wanted not only to be a head coach, but "a great head coach,” and believed there were no shortcuts to success (Mink). ...Tyler Andrew Ford Dr. Breland ENG 101 22 October 2012 What is the first picture that comes to mind when you hear the words “good leader?” Maybe you picture past figures in your life that have made you who you are now. Maybe you picture Nick Sabine Leading his Crimson Tide to all their recent victories. Or you might even possibly see Adolf Hitler, although what he stood for will always be atrocious, he did do an incredible job of getting others to follow him. So the question is: What makes a good leader? Susie Shellenberger, the 2010 recipient of the Reed Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award, would say, “A good leader is one who doesn’t compromise integrity or character when no one is looking. A good leader maintains the same high standards in private as seen in public.” Let’s break down what she meant when she said this. First, a good leader doesn’t compromise character or integrity no matter what. Webster gives such definitions for character as “moral excellence and firmness,” and integrity as “the quality or state of being complete or undivided.” When you put these two together, the sum is a person who is secure in his convictions and who lives under those convictions no matter what the circumstances are. A good leader does not live a two-faced lie. As its definition states, to be a person of integrity means that you are complete or undivided. You are unwavering. You do not act differently around different people groups, but remain the same no matter what others might...

...affect a team. New coaches get hired and existing ones get fired. With each coaching change, there is a chance for change in leadership, which in return could make a program worse or in some cases better. Also, college kids have to deal with their classes and have other off-field distractions to handle. This goes along with the demands that football puts on them. This makes one think whether it is even possible to have sustained success, and if so, such then leads to the question of what is needed to have continued success in college football? To start, one can look at successful programs that have had the most wins. When discussing wins and losses in recent years, what comes to mind is the Southeastern Conference and Alabama Crimson Tide in particular. The SEC has won the last seven national championships, and Alabama has won three of the last four. But, one asks “Is winning football games the only thing that should determine success?” What about the academics and the team’s graduation rate? Those should both be vital parts of “success.” Sadly, coaches are judged and evaluated mostly by their win-loss record. So, what are the main areas that would contribute to having a better win-loss ratio? First, strength and conditioning, is the obvious one, and second, leadership skills is important too. A successful coach should being able to develop leadership in the players in the program as that will help set them up for success in their future. As well, without a...

...1. American Sport Movies There are few countries in the world in which sports permeate national life to the degree that it does in the United States. Sports are a big part of the fabric of American life. The centrality of sports in American life is amply reflected in the American cinema. For decades movie makers have successfully mined sports to produce some of the most inspiring, poignant, exciting and memorable American movies ever made. The genre of ‘Sport Movies’ established in the Fifties and the Sixties. At the very beginning it was hard to see it as an independent genre because there was a lot of mixture. There have been propaganda movies as well as comedies, dramas, gangster movies or even westerns combined with some sport scenes. So the movie industry defined three categories of sport movies. Category 1: movies in which the main part of the narration is about sport or an athlete Category 2: movies which tell the life story of an athlete Category 3: movies which use sport scenes to describe a special milieu In addition to that there are a lot of movies of another genre which use sport scenes to dramatise the story or to create a good suspense. The first sport movies were all about the so called American Myth of victory and glory. Fair competitions and the better athletes defeating the weaken. The fascination of sport inspiring the people was used to lure the public. Then in the eighties and nineties there have been made a lot of biographical movies...

...Joan of Arc -- the seventeen-year-old peasant girl, who, as she said herself, "did not know ‘A’ from ‘B’, " but who, in a year and a month, crowned a reluctant king, rallied a broken people, reversed the course of a great war, and shoved history into a new path --what are we to make of her? The people who came after her in the five centuries since her death tried to make everything of her: demonic fanatic, spiritual mystic, naive and tragically ill-used tool of the powerful, creator and icon of modern popular nationalism, adored heroine, saint. She insisted, even when threatened with torture and faced with death by fire, that she was guided by voices from God. Voices or no voices, her achievements leave anyone who knows her story shaking his head in amazed wonder.’ Joan was born into a poor common family in the peasant village of Domrémy in the French province of Lorraine in 1412. She grew up a simple but unusually devout farm child during the height of the Hundred Years’ War. Disaster after disaster befell her native France -- the English invaders and their Burgundian allies conquered and occupied the northern half of France including Paris. Dauphin Charles VII, the rightful but un-crowned king of France, set up the remnants of his royal court at the town of Chinon. From here, this weak monarch of questionable competence tried to rule over the unoccupied rump of France. Starting in May, 1428, Joan, claiming that God was directing her through the saints, repeatedly approached...
