Crisis

...What is the definition of a crisis? According to dictionary.com a crisis would be a sequence of events at which the trend of all future events, especially for better or for worse, is determined; turning point (crisis, n.d.). A crisis can hit a company anytime and it does not discriminate because of size or notoriety. The best thing a company should have is a plan of action prepared in an advance, a crisis management plan. The Triad Group apparently did not have a crisis management plan in place as the problems started to sneak up, the company felt pressured and fell apart. According to Rick Amme, who heads the crisis and media relations firm Amme & Associates, Inc., there are five stages of scandal. The Triad Group went through all five stages until the United States Marshals, arrived at the door to seize the products and shut them down (Amme, 2004). Could have The Triad Group avoided such a big scandal? Maybe not as the problems had started awhile back but what if the company had followed protocols. The first stage was no comment. Throughout the recalls and seizing of the products the Triad executives and spokesperson would decline to comment on the situation. Although the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) commented that the seizing of the products was to prevent the company from distributing any more products, Triad did not come forward. The best thing that the company could have done was to communicate throughout the crisis. Johnson and Johnson is such company after it...

Management Crisis

...| Topic-; Identify any crisis, which occurred recently in industry/organization critically analyze the ways by which it was resolved. What is management crisis?Crises can strike any company at any time. Microsoft, ValuJet, Chrysler, Pepsi and the tobacco industry are some of the most recent companies that can attest to this fact, but they are not the only ones. Crises do not discriminate based on a company’s size or notoriety, and they can hit when a company least expects them. They come in many forms – strikes, layoffs, product recalls or allegations of misconduct, but while some of these may seem small, every crisis has the potential to damage the reputation of a company. Regardless of the severity of the situation, crises pose a serious threat to companies – not only to their reputation but their fiscal health as well. When Odwalla’s apple juice was thought to be the cause of an outbreak of E. coli bacteria, the company lost a third of its market value. The same allegation against Jack in the Box restaurant in 1993 caused the hamburger chain’s stock price to fall from $14 a share to nearly $3 a share. On the other hand, some companies emerge from crises unscathed in the eyes of consumers and investors. Johnson and Johnson is one such company. After it was discovered that its Tylenol capsules had been laced with cyanide, Johnson and Johnson reacted in such an effective way that the case is now well-documented as an example of successful crisis management. The factor...

Toyota: the Accelerator Crisis

...TECNOLÓGICO DE MONTERREY | THUNDERBIRD Production Operation Management TOYOTA: THE ACCELERATOR CRISIS Study Case Report | | 1. What were the drivers of Toyota´s accelerators crisis? Why was Toyota facing a recall crisis? The drivers of Toyota crisis were Strategic, structural and cultural issues. At the strategic level, the cost reduction strategy added with the increasing of the output volume strategy caused a decrease in quality. Furthermore, the structure of Toyota (HQs in Japan and not in the U.S) impacted Toyota’s response to customer’s claims, taking a long time to address Toyota consumer’s concerns, and in fact was one of the most criticized issues during the crisis. In other words, the company took a considerable time before recalling units that meant life losses and significant economic impacts. At the cultural managerial level, there were difficulties driven by how Japanese address the situation vs. how Americans deal with the problems. The company lost its original philosophy due to different cultural orientations between Japanese headquarters and North American subsidiaries. The fact that Toyota was recovering from its last unit’s recall (due to motors leaking oil) plus the beginning of the global financial crisis, ended up yielding a deviation of the original long term plan to look after the U.S subsidiary´s financial performance, triggering a swap in the three main pillars of Toyota (Safety, Quality and Volume). 2. Crisis Intervention Paper

...There is the process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their condition. This rations patient treatment efficiently when resources are insufficient for all to be treated immediately. There is a need to assess crisis and trauma because not all individuals are equally affected by the crisis which means like one size fits all. Some will need intensive intervention and others will need very little, if there’s any. Recovery from crisis exposure is something that is typical but not everyone exposed to trauma either needs or wants professional help. Therefore, crisis intervention should be offered in response to demonstrated need. There are three parts of a crisis. First, the stressor known also as...

...Andrew Walden Crisis Management Professor Clark Bailey Planning for a Crisis Having a crisis management plan is invaluable when a crisis actually occurs. Whether it be a crisis at home or at work, if you are not prepared with some sort of plan of action, the results could be far worse than the crisis itself. Knowing that crises are inevitable is also a valuable thought. Prevention, communication, leadership and legalistic are all key element that make up a good crisis managemnt plan. I will be discussing many possible crisis that could occur at my home or workplace. When I began analyzing my household in order to determine the possible crises that could occur at my home I realized that my family and I are very ill prepared. As I began trying to compile a list of possible crises I realized that the possibilities were basically endless, so I decided to focus on the most probable crises that may occur. The major crises I came up with are: A house fire, a home invasion, a gas leak, or a chemical leak from a nearby chemical plant. First I will go over my crisis management plan for a fire. As far as prevention is concerned, I would make sure that all of the smoke detectors had batters and were in working condition. Next I would make sure that there were at least two fire extinguishers that are accessible and in working condition. I would also have at least two escape plans. Plan B would be an escape route if someone was trapped upstairs, and plan A would...

Crisis Intervention

...Running head: A Biblical Approach to Crisis Intervention A Biblical Approach to Crisis Intervention and Brief Therapy Brandon Carpenter Liberty Theological Seminary Abstract The paper discusses the brief counseling approach to crisis intervention as utilized by the author. After a crisis is defined and determined, the author uses a short-term counseling methodology adapted from the ABC model as introduced in Kristi Kanal’s text. The counseling pedagogy blends the elements of the ABC model with biblical principles which may be used by the Christian counselor for the purpose of short-term crisis management. A Biblical Approach to Crisis Intervention and Brief Counseling Every believer in Jesus Christ is called to a ministry of encouraging and helping others, especially to other brothers and sisters in the faith whose lives have been encroached upon by a crisis. Many times the abundant life that was promised by Jesus is disrupted when a crisis presents itself. Although every believer can experience the joy of their salvation through the ministry of the Holy Spirit which inwardly resides in them, Christians are not exempt from the distress and vulnerability that crises are capable of producing. Counseling, which is bathed in prayer and which appropriately uses and applies the Word of God, is an essential responsibility of Christian life and fellowship. Moreover, various intervention models and presuppositions are available...

...INDONESIA: The Causes, Effects and Lessons of the 1997 East Asian Financial Crisis by Zara Ahmed Julia Dreier Frank Ro April 9, 2007 FSPP 556: Macroeconomics Professor Kathryn Dominguez [pic] Introduction Following its independence in 1945, the Indonesia economy deteriorated drastically as a result of political instability, a young inexperienced government, and ill-disciplined economic nationalism. However, the New Order administration in the 1960s, brought about a new degree of discipline to economic policy that quickly brought inflation down, managed foreign debt, but more importantly, attracted foreign investment through financial liberalization. As massive inflows of foreign investment poured into the country, problems soon arose with regulation and oversight. These structural weaknesses created instability and ultimately multiplied the effects of the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. With strong encouragement of the IMF, Indonesia adopted a set of policies to protect currency values and penalize insolvent companies, in order to restore investor and creditor confidence in the country. Despite assistance from the International Monetary Fund, the Crisis devastated the Indonesian economy and brought on massive social unrest. This paper consists of six parts. We intend to analyze pre, during, and post-crisis trends utilizing such macroeconomic models as the Mundell-Fleming model, the IS-LM model, and the open economy model for calculating...

Gm Communication Crisis Analysis

...In February of 2015, General Motors initiated a recall on 800,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 and 600,000 Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Ion and Saturn Sky vehicles. The controversy surrounding the recall at this time was why had GM chosen to recall the defective vehicles so long after the ignition switch problem had been discovered. They had been under investigation for just that. Recently inducted as GM’s CEO, Mary Barra was struggling to keep the GM name in tact through this recall nightmare. She is credited for maintaining her cool as she continued to defend how GM was handling the recall and pledging to conduct an internal review of the company stating that GM would, “hold [themselves] accountable and improve our processes so our customers do not experience this again (CNN)." To support this promise, she appointed legal firms to conduct an internal investigation of the events leading up to the recall. In March of that same year, GM expanded its ignition switch recall after admitting to this being the core cause of the recall. The recall was now to include cars sold between 2008 and 2011 in the US. The death toll reached a total of 13 confirmed cases. It is apparent that GM did not feel the need to acknowledge the ignition switch issue until these deaths came to light. Why else would it take GM 10 years to issue a recall? Barra was stuck in a tough situation. She hired Ken Feinberg, a well-known attorney experienced in determining victim compensation, to address...

Communication and Crisis

...Communication And Crisis Course: Date: Professor: Crisis Communication Communication is an essential component of effective crisis management. This is especially the case in a situation where the basic needs, health, and lives of thousands or even millions are at stake. In a situation where the water supply is at risk, for example, it is essential to establish a communication plan as soon as the risk becomes known. In this way any preventable cases of illness or death can be mitigated. When the risk of water supply contamination by a biological agent becomes known, for example, the main requirement is to communicate this to as large a proportion of the affected public as possible while minimizing the risk of panic or false information. To do this effectively, a sequence of risk-related communication needs to be implemented, including the choice of a risk communication team, communication to the public via the press and via information technology. The first step of communicating a risk situation and all its associated factors is from the agency managing director to subordinates in charge of communication practices and risk mitigation. One component of such communication is the need to assemble a risk communication team (Clawson Freeo, 2012). According to Clawson Freeo (2012), this team should include at least the CEO, the chief of Public Relations, the Vice President, and Senior manager of, in this case, the Division of Water Safety, the safety...

Crisis Management

...Definition of Crisis Management Crisis is inevitable and the planning and execution to bring under control such an event that has been developed through complicated processes that causes damages and potentially affects an entire organization is called Crisis Management (Vassilikopoulou, Lepetsos, Siomkos, & Chatzipanagiotou, 2009, pp. 65-66). Crisis Management in Relation to Business Vassilikopoulou et al. (2009) stated, “Crisis are events that are difficult for a company to avoid” (p.66). Vassilikopoulou et al. further stated “the types of crisis are numerous from ‘small-scale organizational issues’ to a grave crisis." Several studies prove that when a company neglects a crisis it will eventually hurt the brand and the image. The following two citations will prove this “The immediate expense of product replacement and consumer compensation may pale in comparison with the loss of consumer trust and damage to brand evaluations” (Lei, Dawar, & Gürhan-Canli, 2012, p. 336). “A poorly managed marketing crisis can quickly destroy the affected brand’s equity, which might have been nurtured over many years” (Zhao. Y., Zhao, Y., & Helsen , K., 2011). Managing Crisis Management should minimize negative consequences (Vassilikopoulou et al., p.69). Vassilikopoulou et al. described “companies involved in a crisis are more likely to be held responsible for the defective product if they have a poor reputation” (as cited in Siomkos, 1999). Thus, a good reputation could also play a protective...
