...Denise Johnson Class: PHL/320 Instructor: Jose Rodriguez Due Date: 01/25/2016 Title: Critical thinking discussion and summary The way I define critical thinking is to evaluate an issue and determine a conclusion without putting personal judgements and thoughts in to the situation. What makes a person a critical thinker? To be able to think logically and come to conclusions based off facts. Making wise choices also comes from critical thinking because in order to make a wise choice there is a lot of effort and thought behind it. Critical thinking has helped me so much in my life for example I believe it was my critical thinking that had me enroll into college and get a degree. I asked myself how I will be able to have a decent living and good earnings. I am a single mother to three and working three jobs in order to provide for my family. I believe that if I earn a degree and educate myself I will be able to land a good job making way more than minimum wage. My ideal goal is to gain a degree and eventually work only one job that will help me be financially stable and secure. I expect to learn how to be a better critical thinker and to be able to make better choices with the help of this course. I want to be able to think before I act so I do not have to suffer from consequences of my actions because I did not think beforehand. I believe enhancing my critical thinking skills and being better at making decisions will save me disappointment in my future....

...hree main problems are listed for the north Dallas location, which are decreased sales volume, WAN problems, and competition from other local retailers. These problems are further complicated by employee attrition, city council legal action, improperly managed inventory and product mix, market trends and variable pay system. The simulation groups the problems into critical problems of urgent nature to address, to non-critical problems still of urgent nature. While the others problems focus on critical yet non-urgent problems and non-critical of non-urgent focus. In framing the problems, the critical urgent problems are the product mix, competition from a local retailer, and variable pay. The critical yet non-urgent problems are legal action. Lastly the non-critical yet urgent problems are the WAN system. In using a Pareto analysis it was determined these were the key problems facing the company. The first choice of product mix was chosen because while sales were falling this factor went along with the opening of the competing store. The improper product mix goes hand-in-hand with decreased sales volume. While product mix is only one factor affecting decreased sales volume this factor is the most important. As market tends show an improperly balance product mix will not bring the consumers into the store for purchasing these items. These factors as well as market analysis can be turned around with an aggressive marketing campaign focusing on the products which have traditionally...

...Thinking Critically Simulation Maurice Smith Critical Thinking: Strategies in Decision Making /MGT 350 Cyndie Shadow, M.B.A. January 28, 2008 Abstract Business company owners and store managers in the retail industry must ensure their businesses are competitive to the industry, in order to maintain their store doors open. In the following scenario a problem evaluation and decision making process is simulated to assist in evaluating a specific retail stores current state. A description of the types of evaluation tools and techniques used and how they assisted with the evaluation of the decision-making process and outcomes will be outlined. A consideration if other types of tools and techniques would have generated better results will be evaluated. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the decision-making process and how different tools and techniques assist with critical thinking. Credenhill is a competitive retail business which is the subject of a simulation. At this time one of Credenhill’s local stores is dealing with problems which range from low sales, unhappy employees to other issues affecting their current operations. During the simulation we went through a problem evaluation and decision-making process intended to identify Credenhill’s current state, suggest corrective actions and measurements to ensure that the outcome of the corrective actions are beneficial to the store. In the following we will discuss the...

...Critical Thinking and Society PHL/458 August 14, 2013 Critical Thinking and Society 1. Describe a situation in which critical and creative could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically in similar situations. A situation in which critical and creative thinking could have been used for a better outcome occurs when the United States went to war with Iraq. In 2002, President George Bush declared that Saddam Hussein posed weapon of mass destruction. Even though the Intelligence could not confirm his assumptions and other nations not agreeing to invade Iraq the United States still declared war with Iraq. Once the war began the inspectors began to look for the weapon of mass destruction. After several months it was crystal clear the country had no weapons of mass destruction. By thinking critically and creatively the United States could have prevented a war thus, saving of trillions of dollars and thousands of lives. 2. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Explain how we use them to form thoughts. Free will is defined as choosing to make a decision and do what he or she please at any time. Free will gives a person the ability to change his or her choices. Truth is defined as “what is so about something, the reality of the matter, as distinguished from what people wish were so, believe to be so, or assert to be so” (Ruggiero, 2009). Knowledge is by personal experience, observation, and report from other. We have faults...

...Critical Thinking Scenario John Doe ETH/316 August 5, 2015 Critical Thinking Scenario Wyoming's Upper Green River Valley is a crucial link to Yellowstone ecosystem. Every year thousands of animals including Antelope, Elk, and Mule deer, pass through the valley on a long migration from the Grand Tetons to their winter grazing pastures. This valley is also home to the rare Sage-Grouse. The valley is also the home to the vital trout habitat of the headwaters of the Colorado River. People have compared the green valley river environment to the environment of the Serengeti, because of the spectacular variety of wildlife. Locals and environmentalist say it is starting to look like Saudi Arabia because of the natural gas drilling sites. So the question is to drill or not to drill this is what we will discuss in this essay. Scientist and other experts claim that there’s large pockets of natural gas in this geological region and is attracting many natural gas companies to drill and extract this natural gas. Nightline reported an article stating “Experts have estimated that there’s roughly 20 trillion cubic feet of gas here. That would supply the entire nation’s natural gas needs for about a year. The same geological formation that creates a natural corridor for wildlife also holds rich deposits of natural gas, miles beneath the surface. This country’s increasing demand for natural gas coupled with new technology is turning this area into a bonanza for the energy industry...

...AC 1.1Explain the difference between beliefs, attitudes and values Every person has a set of beliefs, values and attitude that are individual to them. A belief can be religious, it can be an assumption that something is true without any proof or verification, beliefs can also be a firmly held conviction, this can stem from something that they have been told from a young age, something that they have read or heard for instance I believe that people should not tell lies and if they do then I would lose trust in that person. Values underpin how we all behave, work and treat others, each person’s values can be very different, one of my values is that every person should be treated fairly, this value stems from my upbringing where as a child in a family of five children, my parents ensured that we were all treated fairly. This follows into my working life where I try to ensure that I treat all of my staff fairly and give each person the opportunity to progress in their career. A value is a principle or standard of behaviour and is a person’s judgement of what is important in life, the importance, worth or usefulness of something. A company may have a set of values that may be different to your own, in time you may accept these values as your own. Our values may be added to over time for instance as you start your working life you may value earning money and progressing in your career, as you have a family you may value family time over career progression. Abraham Maslow’s...

...In the process of researching the selected topic regarding “Fear” there were many angles to consider in how ‘in depth’ the writers got into their topic. There were many questions to ask in how well the authors of the writings made their claims concerning the topic. As each author has his or her own way of reaching the audience it would be only right that his or her writing process reflect this. Each author has their own brand of emotion and logic he or she uses to reach their audiences, which in turn can affect each authors writing. Each author brings to the table a unique style of writing, one using technical/formal, one using a bit of technical/formal with a bit of informal thrown in. The third author was very informal toward their audience. In regard to this analysis this essay will reflect on each different aspect these authors bring forth in their writings concerning the topic “Fear.” The first author who will be discussed within this essay is Frank Furedi. As he is the one that started this essay on the trail of finding how different authors reflect on this topic of fear. Furedi starts his topic with “The only thing we have to fear is the “culture of fear” itself” (Furedi, 2007, pg. 1). In stating his argument that” fear is playing a key role in the twenty-first century” he is making a claim without any support to back his statement at this time (Furedi, 2001, pg.1). The style of Furedi’s writing is a mixture between formal and informal, in the range of semiformal. The...

...Critical Thinking Assignment 1 Kim McLaughlin 01/26/2014 Abstract Our senses both enlighten and deceive our mind. Our senses act as a liaison to the world working hand in hand to shape our perception of who we are, where we are, and what is going on in our surroundings. Our senses nourish our brain a lot like food nourishes our body; without them our brain would be virtually blank. Provide at least three (3) reasons for believing in the accuracy or inaccuracy of sensory information. Our sensory information comes directly from our senses. For example, our eye sees what is taking place around us and sends the data to the brain so we can identify or recognize our surroundings. Thus, the information from the eye is real and not in any way modified or abstracted. Secondly we should believe in the accuracy of sensory information because our prior knowledge helps us to relate to what we perceive to be true. This brings about the production of sensory information that helps us in making decisions good or bad. Having accurate information, one is able to decide whether a particular taste is sweet, sour or bitter subject to what they perceive. One more example to support accuracy of sensory information is when a doctor whose patient has multiple symptoms and with his knowledge he diagnoses the correct illness and the patient gets well. Third, the data from our senses is very important especially in establishing a starting point for our learning and behaviour nuisances in the...

...JEROME LICKISS CRT/205 WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENT INDIVIDUAL: WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING MRS. BARBARA STEARS Critical thinking is as the old saying goes “thinking about thinking”, we use critical thinking almost in everything we do day to day, such as figuring out what we want to wear for that day. When we use critical thinking we are deciding whether or not criteria are of good sense of logical. If we were given a project such as designing something or evaluate something or do anything that involves coming up with a conclusion, you would have to stop and really think more critically of what it is you are going to design, how you’re going to deign it and whether or not the design will meet all the requirements that is expected. A lot of things need to happen when you’re using critical thinking especially if you were required to give a design especially at work. Examples of the steps you would take when using critical thinking would be taking notes, considering other designs and not just the one that just pops up in your head and as well as making sure that all the specs meet company requirements. Your basic goal when it comes to critical thinking is to be able to come up with a decision that is not only correct but wise. It is real easy for us to be able to just make a quick decision when it comes to any decision we face in life, which can have severe consequences if the wrong decision is made, but if we can take the time to evaluate our objective using standards or...

...Finding Inner Peace John Frazier Finding inner peace is easier than alot of people think it is. In a few simple steps I can explain how to begin this process. Of couse you will not become a spokes person for peace over night. However with time you will find yourself having a very relaxed way of thinking and living. Peace comes from within do not seek it without. The most critcal part of this journey is being able to love yourself 100%. Though this sounds easy, its not when you have a society that has made an image of what they consider a perfect male or perfect female. God has made every human on this earth have distintive features. And in his eyes they are all beautiful. If you are one who deals with self esteam issues, every morning look yourself in the mirror and say God does not make mistakes. Our first and last love is self love. The second step is accept what it is. There is only so much that we have control over. If we are presented with a situation that we can not change or affect then just let it be. "It is what it is" is something i like to say. For example say your going to be late for work becasue there is traffic and there is only one route to your job, instead of getting stressed out about being late for work understand that you can not physically pick up the cars and move them so just let it be. Obviously there is nothing you can do about traffic so don't think about it just wake up alittle earlier the next day. If you practice this on small situations...

...by. Beginning critical thinkers often tend to do the things exactly the way they want, or how other friends and family do them and they do not commonly think outside the box. Average level critical thinkers are a very moderate critical thinker. They may have had little or no training on the subject and they tend to only think critically when the situation is convenient for them. They do understand that there might be more involved to their thought processes but they might not have learned just how to deal with things with critical thinking just yet. The average critical thinker has a thinking level above the beginner and not quite to the advanced, but there is an opportunity for these folks to learn and become advanced. The advanced critcal thinker is the not so common person who has learned all of the steps to critical thinking and has also learned how to apply those steps in order to solve problems. These are the people who have the ability to tell most truth from non truths and are always questioning everything. This is the ultimate level of critical thinking that we all wish to achieve. I would place myself on the average critical thinking level. I am not always critically thinking, however, I do have a very questioning mind naturally. I have not chosen to follow in the footsteps of my friends and family when it comes to my thinking and my beliefs (political or...

...The Tragedy That Changed My Life Happy go lucky were the days of my childhood. All a kid could think about was having fun. There were no worries about taking on adult responsibilities, or growing up anytime soon. You just wake up in the mornings and attack the day with hyperness and happiness. Besides, since childhood doesn't last forever, my main priority was to venture into something dangerous, carefree of any outcomes ready to present itself. At the age of four, the worst day of my childhood had finally come to seek me out. I was sitting in the living room watching television with my family when my father asked my brother if he wanted to ride with him to the store. I heard my father ask him, I wanted to go with them so that I could get some candy. My father told me no so i went outside to play until i heard the door open, then I stood on the back bumper of the truck and crouched down where i would be unseen. The vehicle started moving backwards, and before I knew it we were driving down our steep, bumpy hill and we reached the road. The vehicle started to increase in speed, and all I remember was blacking out. Everything had gone to silence; I thought i was dead. I don't remember falling off the truck, or rolling on the rough asphalt, but i do remember waking up in my brother's arms bleeding tremendously all over him while my father was panicking trying to drive me to the Shannon Fire Department for help. I was then strapped to a stretcher and rushed in an ambulance to...
