The conquest of the world by the Europeans was a key event within Historical Globalization. Historical Globalization was the finding of many significant sources by the Europeans. It was the start of their dominance throughout the world. Colonizing a lot of the world, Europe became the most well-known and influential continent throughout the world. Exploring many parts of the world led to many discoveries and the start of Globalization because of the European contact with many people along the way. One major discovery that was made was the Silk Road. This was a very significant pathway to the trading and profitable route for the Europeans. The person that had written this source did not like how Historical Globalization occurred. The reason they could have written this source is because they grew up in a country where they had no say and their opinion didn’t matter to anyone. The era this source could have been written in was maybe during the Industrial Revolution which is around the 1800’s. Either you were developed or strength of your country/continent declined. Europeans always wanted power, but this person totally disagrees with that. The source is saying that each country should have independence because it states that “No country should seek to extend its policy over any other country or people.” The view of the Europeans was very Eurocentric and disagrees with the interpretation of this source. Each should be responsible enough to make their own decision and have confidence within that decision because it says, “Every country should be unrestricted, secure, and confident in pursing these goals, regardless of the country’s size or strength.” The imperialistic attitude of the Europeans goes against what this source is trying to say because it says it doesn’t matter about the size or strength of your country. Being dominant and influential doesn’t give you the right to use that power over another. How in the 1880’s the Canadian government tried to assimilate First Nations. This is disagreeing with the first statement, “No country should seek to extend its policy over any other country or people,” because First Nations are a group of people and today the government has apologized and set up funds for First Nations with problems and may need different types of counseling. Agreeing with this quote would be that dominance isn’t important and it doesn’t matter who you are or how strong your country or continent is, you have no opinion on decisions that are being made inside another country. The opposing view of this source is that country’s and different groups of people should have all influence and control over the country’s or continents that are weaker and more vulnerable to be influenced with decisions that are being made. I agree with the idea that is being presented to some extent to how the Canadians assimilated First Nations and the actions of the Europeans in the 1800’s were disrespectful. I think the more industrialized countries should help guide other countries that need the leadership to make the right decisions without over ruling them.
There are no excuses to how the Canadians treated First Nations in the 1800’s-2000’s. The integration of the First Nations into mainstream society disagrees with the source because the action is of the Canadians towards the First Nations and how they tried to be Paternalistic over the First Nations. Trying to Assimilate First Nations was the wrong thing to do because of the way they approached it, they thought they were doing good for them but in reality, they weren’t. Residential schools resulted from an Imperialistic type of attitude. If the parents didn’t let their kids go to the school, they were arrested. When in Residential Schools, it wasn’t just their religion they had to change, everything was transformed. The distance between the kids and their parents was so far away, they didn’t have contact with their parents for 10 months at a time. They lost many traditions that had been in their family for many generations. This led to a very Eurocentric way of life because Canada had already adopted many of the European lifestyle; it was just natural for the First Nations to pick up European traditions because that is what they were taught. They couldn’t speak their original language and brothers and sisters were split into different rooms so they couldn’t speak their own language. Clothing that they wore looked like something many groups of people were wearing and it was very European like. Residential schools led to many First Nations abusing alcohol, becoming drug attics and others have family violence. The apologies that the Canadian government has tried to send to them may not be enough to fix what has happened. They established the Aboriginal Healing Foundation. It was used to help those aboriginals in need to get the help from councilors and guidance from people that they needed to help them heal. It’s a good thing we learn from our past because doing this again could lead to even worse issues. The issues that they had led to should have been dealt with a long time ago, but they just started to get fixed not too many years ago. Many First Nations today don’t like to speak of their experience within the residential school if they went to one because that is how brutal it was. The Residential Schools go against what the source is saying because the Canadian government and the teachers of the school were trying to extend their policy over the First Nations. They did some unnecessary and inappropriate things to try and rule over the First Nations and all it caused was major problems in today’s world.
Not Consulting the First Nations over land has been the leading cause if many present issues today. For many years, since the 1900’s the Canadian government has had building built on First Nations land. Without consulting them, the First Nations have gotten angrier about what is happening to their land. The Oka-Quebec crisis was one of the most dangerous of them all happening in 1990. The municipal government wanted to build a golf course on the land of the first nations and they had enough of it. Because of all these crisis’, the Canadian government brought in the Indian act in 1876. The Act was designed to protect the land that First Nations still had left to them. But, under the act, title to the land still belonged to the government. This act today, is ignored and didn’t do much because the First Nations are not being asked permission before using their land. Many treaties were brought in and some still exist today. Many of the treaties were ignored in the 1700’s-1800 because of language barriers and translators had to come in and translate but there was always room for confusion. . They also have 70 treaties that are still around today, between the Europeans and many First Nations that deal with the land claims. The northern gateway pipeline would run from Edmonton to British Columbia and the concern would be that it would go through many reserves and many of the First Nations dis agreed with the pipeline. Lands that are left for the First Nations today are called reserves. They were built for the First Nations to live on and there are 140 reserves in Alberta alone. Many land claims are still an issue today and are still yet to be sorted out between the First Nations and the Canadian government.
Helping guide countries or groups of people is not an issue. This is being paternalistic. When the Europeans were trying to help the Aztecs survive, they thought they were doing the right thing until they all got wiped out. During the 15th and 16th centuries the Europeans came over into what is now Newfoundland, and contacted the Beothuks people. They tried to help them survive, but then ended up cutting off their food supply and the Beothuks became extinct. Canada and many developed continents should be able to help others like Africa. Africa needs some guidance because they are one of the least developed and don’t have as much experience in decision making as we do. We try to influence them to make the right decision but don’t completely rule over them. Just help guide them. When countries or colonies need the help, for example, first aid, they can’t afford it so we need to help. Bringing in policies and practices to help lead countries are mutually beneficial to both countries and continents. They may make traditions based on the guidelines that other countries or continents have set up because the government and the people may look up to those leaders as role models. An example would be how the IMF, how they help expand world trade. The wealthier a country is, the more the member countries have to pay. The World Bank provides loans to the less developed countries, but there are some conditions to this. With helping countries and continents they have to adopt a western world view and they may have to cut government spending to social programs. Many disagree with this, but in the long run it may help with the stability of their economy. Many are trying to do the best they can to help the other countries and continents in decision making politically, socially and economically. Extending your policy over another group of people is to be allowed to some extent, not pushing it so that there is a dispute between these groups from the 1800-1900’s. The guiding into the right decision may be difficult as some persist or force you into something you don’t want to do. The taking over of your land and properties is unwanted and that is way there are still many problems lying between many groups of people today. Helping someone make the right decision can lead them into something that help that country or contient or can make it worse than it already is.
