...Project Portfolio Management at XYZ Pharma Early morning, Monday 29th August 2005. John Smith, head of portfolio management and strategic planning, was paging through the slides he had prepared for the Portfolio Management Board (PMB) meeting which would start at 9 am, and which was scheduled to last until Friday. “We have been preparing this meeting for weeks”, he thought, “and it seems the PMB has some tough decisions to make”. The PMB of XYZ Pharma, the pharmaceutical division of XYZ, one of the world’s leading companies in the life science sector, convenes yearly in August to review the composition of the research and development (R&D) project portfolio. It also meets on a monthly basis to monitor the project portfolio and make decisions regarding new developments. According to John Smith, “The PMB is an important decision making body because it shapes the future of the company by determining its product pipeline”. The PMB members include the CEO of XYZ, the CEO of XYZ Pharma, the heads of the different business units, the heads of Development, Research, Global Marketing and Strategic Planning, the regional heads for the US, Europe and Japan and the functional managers for Regulation, Clinical, Licensing, Technical Research and Development, and Patents. The portfolio group, led by John Smith, had analysed the project portfolio carefully and had highlighted several potential threats that required action. According to John, “There will be an in-depth discussion of which...

...Asking questions, analyzing, making observations, defining, and listening: what do all these processes have in common? They are all skills related to critical thinking. Critical thinking is defined as the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment (Lau 1). Without critical thinking individuals would struggle to see beyond the media bias and political propaganda they encounters daily. When emotions drive decisions, those decisions are not thought about critically. Feelings can confuse one’s ability to think critically and instead of basing decisions on sound consistent logic, decisions are based on instinct and lack of information. In order to think critically an individual must learn to become self-aware and...

...Critical Thinking Concept Analysis During exposition of the nursing theory, there is a general understanding that concepts are the ones which are building blocks explaining a phenomenon and providing structure to science. Moreover, concepts contribute to theory development and strengthen nursing practice through research, plus via concept analysis, many vague terms gain a valuable meaning at the same time improving a quality of care (Bousso, Poles, Cruz, 2013). Therefore, one of the crucial concepts in nursing, in my opinion, is critical thinking which Facione (2013) is identified as cognitive skills which include interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. Consequently, those presumptively acquired attributes...

...Analysis Using Critical Thinking Model: Cliffside Holding Company Memo University of Maryland University College Introduction Amidst this barrage of information in today’s world, it is often difficult to make a decision and stand by it, assured that it was the most advantageous to all those involved. Fortunately, critical thinking is a tool available to assist in making well thought out decisions in the face of contradictory opinions and impulsive actions. In Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking, Browne and Keeley (2013) explain that critical thinking is “reacting with systematic evaluation to what you have heard and read” (p. 4). They further assert that critical thinking “requires a set of skills and attitudes that are built around a series of related critical questions” (p. 4). By asking the right questions, we employ the skill of critical thinking to enhance what and how we process information. To examine the concept of critical questions, this paper will analyze a business document from Cliffside Holding of Massapequa using the critical thinking model outlined by Browne and Keeley (2013) in Asking the Right Questions. Analysis Mr. Anil Ravaswami, Vice-President (VP) of Human Resources (HR) of Cliffside Holding Company of Massapequa (CHMC), wrote a memo to CEO Cynthia Castle in response to her request for the evaluation of a proposal for a new leadership development program to be designed for Cliffside’s junior insurance executives (personal...

...CRITICAL THINKING ANALYSIS OF MARTIN LUTHER KING’S SPEECH, “I HAVE A DREAM” Martin Luther King uses a strong approach to deliver a speech full of encouragement and motivation for the deprived freedom of blacks living in American in the mid-1900s. With a recording break crowd in attendance in Washington in August 1986, Martin Luther King expresses the experienced suffering and demand for change in the lives of blacks. His purpose is clear and without hesitation. As I listener, I felt his passion that was supported by his appropriate boundaries to live equally. With the limitations and challenges King faced during that time, I can understand why his speech is a significant milestone in our country’s history. King makes the listener understand that his purpose is to fairly achieve the long overdue equality blacks have been robbed of. He is clear in his mission and has no intentions of entertaining such an mission with wrong doings or harm. I can only imagine, while during this time in American history the blacks had lived with so much oppression and discrimination, how challenging it would have been to approach such freedom with proper actions. Although King is trying to gain something in his speech, he is not driven by a selfish motive. He distinctly states his purpose and strategizes on the actions needed. At the end of his speech, I ask myself, “Do I agree with the necessity of blacks’ freedom?”. King presents his speech in a manner that is realistic, future...

...ABSTRACT This study aims at putting critical thinking in action evaluating the ethical approaches effective for managers making company decisions. Ethics, in the working place, refers to the rules of the workplace that an employee has to comply with, along with the rules of society. Lauren a quality engineer in her company is faced with an ethical challenge to sign or not to sign fraudulent report to produce a product that does not meet quality standard of the customer .In the study, the concept of ethics has been examined using principles of ethics, followed by a conceptual framework of making ethical decisions. Lauren is meant to determine using five ethical principles, what is right and wrong, fair and unfair, respect of human rights, the virtuous principle and the common good principle. Ethics generally means the “just” or “right” behavioral standards in a situation between individuals. Social principles including justice and right are “generally accepted” (Browning, J. & Zabriskie, N.B. 1983, p. 219). Ethics is a discipline that investigates the doings of humans as a special problem field and examines the entities and characteristics of this field and the principles (values) governing this field, and whether the doings of human beings are dependent or independent (Taylor, 1975, p. 1). In the analysis of the case results from the five ethical principles suggest that Lauren should not sign the report since it is unethical and fraudulent perhaps the company may come up with...

...In this internal Cliffside Holding Company memo, Mr. Anil Ravaswami, Vice President of Human Resources of writes to Ms. Cynthia Castle, CEO to discuss the proposition of a leadership development program for junior insurance executives. Ms. Forsythe of Cliffside Holdings has proposed the new program and identified the total cost to be “$100,000.00 per year plus approximately the same amount for lost time on the job.” Mr. Ravaswami discusses the reasons he believes Cliffside Holding Company should not fund this new development program. The memo and rationale will be analyzed using the steps for Critical Thinking modeled in Asking the Right Questions by Brown and Keeley (2015). What are the issue and conclusion? The issue, or question being raised is apparent in the first sentence of the memo, “That we establish and fund a new leadership development program of our junior insurance executives.” Ravaswami writes that several of the senior leadership members at CHCM have not gone through such training and despite this, are all very “successful and effective without such programs” He goes on to point out that personality traits such as ambition, self confidence and intelligence were possessed by several known leaders throughout history show that leaders are not made, but born. The conclusion, as highlighted in the ‘Conclusion and Recommendations’ of the memo is “CHCM should not invest in the proposed initiative to send its junior executives for annual leadership training.” In...

...For the Critical Thinking Activity #2, I chose to do the first scenario that involves an ethical stand point. This scenario is about a student entering an imaging program and has discovered that there has been a lot of changes since this student was accepted. The changes involve lack of funding, no internships, fewer instructors, instructors teaching classes they never have before, and less patient time at clinicals. This student feels trapped in the program because it's too late to go into another program and learns of the new marketing materials after the program began. The main dilemma is, why did no one show this student the changes, and what is the effect on the student. The ethical theory and model I am going to use to make my decisions in this dilemma is the deontology theory and the contractual model. I am using the deontology theory because it uses formal rules of right and wrong. It it the foundation for...

...EDUCATION Critical thinking and analysis: a model for written assignments Sharon L Edwards W hat is critical analysis? In the author’s personal experience this question has been answered by the following statement: ‘It is being critical of the literature.’ However, this does not answer the question. A literature search also failed to provide any information on critical analysis. The justification for developing a model for critical analysis, however, was not solely the lack of available literature. Other reasons included: to provide a definition of the terms; and to help both educationalists and students interpret the concepts involved. Nurse educationalists and nursing students lack a clear understanding of the critical processes and this could severely diminish the profession’s ability to articulate issues that are imperative to the advancement of nursing practice in the future. This article recommends a model of critical analysis that can be used by students and educationalists. It suggests that critical thinking and analysis are interrelated and complementary, but not synonymous. It gives examples of the model’s components in order to clarify their meaning. The model will hopefully give students a premise on which to base their assignments, and nurse educationalists will be able to incorporate it into their teaching practice. It will also provide an element of reality to critical analysis which will prevent it from becoming so abstract and idealistic as to render...

...The Relationship between Critical Thinking and Ethics Critical Thinking and Ethics The late Dr. Wayne Dyer said “When you change the way you look at things the things you look at change”. Our perceptions and judgments reflects how we think about things and the decisions we make which influence our lives. Critical Thinking is the ability to be self disciplined and practical in order to make factual and rational decisions and/or judgments. Ethics are the morals we use to make those choices. Critical Thinking and Ethics go hand in hand as it takes someone with good moral standards to think critically. The Critical Thinking Process The following six aspects of the critical thinking assist in developing critical thinking skills: Remembering- Recalling information relevant to the topic or idea of what is being conveyed. Comprehension- Understanding the topic or issue and relate new knowledge to what you already know. Application- Carrying out a task and apply what one has comprehended. Analysis- Breaking down information to demonstrate how ideas are related or connected. Creative- Combining what was analyzed with other information to come up with something new. Evaluation- Making informed assessment based on comprehension, application, analysis and creative thinking. Everyone has daily...
