Life of a Correctional Officer

...OF A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER CRJ: 303 Corrections 17 March 2013 Abstract The life of a correctional officer is something that is easily over looked. Not understanding or knowing the intricate details that go into what it actually takes to coexist with incarcerated inmates is one of the reasons that the general public is able to go about their daily lives, not thinking or wondering how those inmates are controlled. Correctional officers have one of the hardest jobs on the planet, having to work with prison inmates on a daily basis and not knowing when something may happen that could endanger themselves or their fellow correctional officers. Keywords: daily, corrections, life, officers, policies, The life of a correctional officer is a multi-prong one. A correctional officer is a staff person in a prison or jail who accomplishes the institution’s mission by maintaining control and order within the prison (Seiter, 2011). While the job of a correctional officer is very critical within a prison and may vary vastly depending on the role unique to a certain prison or jail, it is very important that we all understand that these quiet guardians are the tip of the spear in the correctional facilities. The differences between jails and prisons have been clearly defined and the missions between the two are considerately different, there is relatively little difference in the actual roles that correctional officers play in the two types of facilities. Correctional officers are solely...

Life Plan

...My Life Plan Stephanie Bazilio Keiser University My Life Plan By definition, success is “the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals” (Dictionary.com, 2016). John Rawls believed that a “rational life plan” (Boss, 2015, pg. 15) needs to be developed in order to achieve success. With a life plan, the goal-setter is made aware of all the progression they’ve made, which will subconsciously make them want to do more, until they have met all of their goals. In view of this, I will be sharing my values, my strengths and weaknesses, my short and long term goals, and my plans of action to achieve those goals. This is my life plan. There are a lot of values I view as important, however, I managed to come up with my own personal statement of important values. It is important for me to live with purpose and with immense ambition, with determination and great focus. It is important for me to tear down walls, searching for independence and honesty, while preserving the sacredness of God. It is important that I welcome challenges with perseverance that will lead to wisdom and it is important that I share faith, provide hope, and spread love. I want to encourage, provide guidance, and to also inspire others, but most importantly, to love radically, serve sacrificially, and to give generously. What I have found to be my strengths during this phase of my life is the responsibility I have...

When I read the results I had to laugh because I think for every job I have ever had in my life they were all in the field that the test showed .I served almost ten years in the United States Army which I would consider to be conventional, I’m not sure how the system picked up on me being enterprising other than the fact that I work for the United States Post Office and I did work for Wal-Mart Distribution for roughly three weeks. It also showed me being investigative which brought me back to my original career path. I worked eleven years as a Senior Correctional Officer for the state of Virginia I always wanted to do something in law enforcement my dream job was to become a United States Federal Marshall but things in my past made that impossible for me to have. Correctional Education

...February 3, 2014 8:29:57 AM CST6 days ago ED7590 Discussion 6d1 This post required a peer-reviewed journal article be selected from the Capella Library. The chosen article was about a descriptive study completed of nine states and the Funding support for school-wide positive behavioral interventions and support implementation and scale-up. This article examines the major focus and the difficulty states face with the process of selecting, implementing, and scaling-up evidence-based practices. The article also contains a discussion about the renewed commitment to improving student outcomes and how that has led directly to the need for effective practices implemented at scale (Gage et. Al, 2013). In particular, this article examines the funding decisions of nine specific states and makes note that funding decisions made at state, regional, and district levels remain a key to large-scale implementation of effective practices (Gage et. Al, 2013). No one will argue that the main objective of education in the United States is to offer all students a free and suitable public education so they may become active and vital members and contributors to society. However, the process involved in funding education to achieve this goal is a very complex one mainly because it includes interests, policies, and dollars originating from and flowing among local education agencies (LEAs), state education agencies (SEAs), and federal government agencies (e.g., U.S. Departments of Education...

...close to five thousand prisoners in custody in Queensland prisons and this number is on the increase. Prisoners have complex health needs and it is the role of the correctional health nurse to care for prisoner-patients and their health needs. Yet there is a paucity of research surrounding this topic. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of nurses caring for prisoner-patients. Five registered nurses, employed in correctional centres in Southeast Queensland were interviewed to illuminate the experience of caring for prisoner-patients. Data was analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) method of phenomenology. Textual analysis revealed two themes with five corresponding sub-themes that depicted the meaning of nurses’ caring for prisonerpatients. The experience of nurses caring for prisoner-patients was described by nurse participants as ‘obstructive practices’ from the custodial officers, ‘decreased standards of care’ by nursing staff, ‘prejudice’ towards to prisoners, ‘increased level of mentally ill prisoners’ and a ‘lack of recognition’ for nurses working in the prisons. Amidst all these difficulties, nurses who cared for prisoner-patients demonstrated courage in the work they did and persevered for the sake of the their prisoner-patients and the specialty that is correctional health nursing. Communication must continue between prison and health care administrators in order to identify conflicting issues that impact on the autonomy of...

Measurement of Crime

...inception in the early 1900s. Some would argue that the system data is invalid and does not accurately reflect the crimes committed, reported, or prosecuted, and neither is it indicative of the cause for criminal behavior. Nonetheless, this system is the only source available with any form of useful data relating to crime. Is there a more reliable alternative to measuring crime and collecting pertinent data? In America, law enforcement agencies use criminal statistic reports to measure crime; however, these statistics do not account for crimes that go unreported, reported crimes that did not lead to arrests, and charges reduced through plea-bargaining. When it comes to analyzing crime statistics a person must use his or her own critical thinking skills. Not all crime statistics will be accurate as it is an attempt to provide the American public with general information gathered that may not be in detail. The subject of Information is key, at the basic level a person should have knowledge in the description of the crime. There are a numerous amount of questions a person must take into consideration when it comes to reading and reviewing these reports. For example, 1.) Examine the source and whether or not it is reliable and trustworthy 2.) Acknowledge the possibility that there are flaws and omissions within the data and investigate to find the facts 3.) Keep in mind the significance of the data, its validity, and the message its goal is to portray. These are only a few proposals...
