...Critical Thinkers and Education A Teachers Goal Bia Mcgrue Scypion EDU372: Educational Psychology Prof. Jimletta Vareene-Thomas 2/20/2016 Critical Thinkers and Education A Teachers Goal Throughout life we are challenged and we encounter an abundance of issues or problems that we need to solve. Some problems that can be resolved effortlessly and efficiently but other obstacles may require a more critical and creative thinking to overcome. When it comes down to thinking to solve problems we depend on our thinking or give some regurgitated answer that we just read. But “much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed, or downright prejudiced” (TCTC, 2016). The purpose of critical thinking is so that we are able to not only accomplish or attain understanding but also so we can assess or check each other’s frame of reference and eventually clarify the question or dilemma at hand. Some would argue whose challenge is it to get students to move pass their beliefs and assumption. Is it on students to dig deeper to gain or find additional tools and information that leads to developing a more in depth thought process. Richard Dawkins expressed that we should “not indoctrinate your children. Teach them how to think for themselves, how to evaluate evidence, and how to disagree with you” (Dawkins, 2015). Picture a student who completes every assignment follows along attentively writes down the notes and answers the questions with the information found...

...Personal Reflection Paper What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is a controlled way of thinking outside the box to determine great ideas that ensure success and determination when brainstorming anything. Reflecting back to week one I had to identify what critical thinking was to me and identify the six thinking stages of thinking and I fell into stage two which was the challenged thinker. I put myself into this stage because of how much I didn’t really know about critical thinking and the details it included. After nine weeks of learning about critical thinking and the details that are included, I have been able to move into further stages of critical thinking. In the last nine week’s I have read and understood many significant things about critical thinking. The top three significant things I have taken away from this class are; creative thinking, the role of questioning and criticism, and arguments analysis and evaluation. Creative thinking has taught me how to evaluate strategies to promote creative thinking and curiosity, and how to explain key methods for producing ideas. I am now able to understand different ways of thinking creatively when producing new ideas and presenting them. The role of questioning and criticism has ensured me to explain types of questions that lead to critical thinking, and to apply those strategies to stop criticism in problem solving. After learning about this topic it has ensured me to be more aware of the questioning that leads...

...PHI 105 What is Critical Thinking? Critical thinking to me is the process in which you have a difficult problem and or question, that requires a substantial amount of intelligent and intentional thinking to solve a problem and/or question and to come to an educated solution. Critical thinking is thinking outside of the norm. It is a process in which you find logical and thought out reasoning. With critical thinking, you tend to seek out evidence to support a person’s argument or someone’s conclusion. I have found that critical thinking can be divided into three skills, curiosity, skepticism, and humility. Curiosity is wanting to learn more information at hand, while keeping an open mind. Skepticism is when a person is unsure of something and the information being told is sought out to find the truth in it. Humility is being able to express your ideas and personal opinions and being able to admit you are wrong when given more evidence. As Edward Glaser stated, “The ability to think critically, as conceived in this volume, involves three things: an attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one's experiences, knowledge of the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning, and some skill in applying those methods. Critical thinking calls for a persistent effort to examine any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the evidence that supports it and the further conclusions to which it tends. It...

...Week 9 Assignment It is amazing that after nine weeks of a critical thinking class, I have not only understood what critical thinking means but I can apply it to my everyday life. Based on responses from my week one assignment, I can easily see that my responses were based on common sense responses versus having actual knowledge on critical thinking. I see now that critical thinking is disciplined intellectual criticism that combines research, knowledge of historical context, and balanced judgment. Critical thinking involves applied thinking to its problem or issue. Throughout the nine weeks of class there have been several things I have learned about critical thinking. A lot of the critical thinking techniques have been good ways for me to actively use my critical thinking skills. In addition, there are some that stuck with me, like in week three I learned how to be a critical reader, listener, and viewer. In week five, I also learned the difference between Issues and problems. I tackled that in a two part Learnscape exercise that helped me understand the difference when dealing with a problem with teenagers using drugs. In week seven, I also learned the role of criticism which taught me why critical thinking is necessary and an overview of how critical thinking is applied to problems and issues in everyday life. The way I think critically since the start of this course has changed dramatically because I no longer just look at a problem and let it be or just apply simple...

...Critical Thinking Application MGT350 - Critical Thinking: Strategies in Decision Making January 9, 2011 Dave Ball Abstract Critical thinking is an important part of everyday life. Many decision models have been created to support critical thinking. Those models are based on three core elements, framing or identifying the problem, gathering and qualifying supporting information to support a decision, and evaluating the decision. By applying these critical thinking techniques the benefits of critical thinking can be realized. This paper will briefly discuss critical thinking, its importance and benefits, and present the reader with a real-world example of critical thinking. Critical Thinking Application Critical thinking is defined by Paul and Elder (2006) as “thinking explicitly aimed at well-founded judgment, utilizing appropriate evaluative standards in an attempt to determine the true worth, merit, or value of something” (Section Introduction, p. xxiv). Critical thinking assists a decision maker to make the right decision based on the information available. Decisions are an everyday part of life. Some believe that an average person could make as many as 40,000 decisions in an average day. Whereas not all of these decisions require critical thinking skills, many decisions that directly affect those around us should apply critical thinking techniques to ensure an informed decision is reached. The University of Phoenix decision model is a set of techniques...

...EDUCATION Critical thinking and analysis: a model for written assignments Sharon L Edwards W hat is critical analysis? In the author’s personal experience this question has been answered by the following statement: ‘It is being critical of the literature.’ However, this does not answer the question. A literature search also failed to provide any information on critical analysis. The justification for developing a model for critical analysis, however, was not solely the lack of available literature. Other reasons included: to provide a definition of the terms; and to help both educationalists and students interpret the concepts involved. Nurse educationalists and nursing students lack a clear understanding of the critical processes and this could severely diminish the profession’s ability to articulate issues that are imperative to the advancement of nursing practice in the future. This article recommends a model of critical analysis that can be used by students and educationalists. It suggests that critical thinking and analysis are interrelated and complementary, but not synonymous. It gives examples of the model’s components in order to clarify their meaning. The model will hopefully give students a premise on which to base their assignments, and nurse educationalists will be able to incorporate it into their teaching practice. It will also provide an element of reality to critical analysis which will prevent it from becoming so abstract and idealistic as to render...
