...The latest report shows there at 1.6 million youth who face homelessness each year without a parent or guardian and they can’t meet their basic needs (2012, homelesslaw.org). The youths are forced to survive by any means necessary and our local government is concerned about cutting education, jobs and passing budgets. Our youth are in crisis mode. Many youths are dealing with unstable parents with mental illness; a disruptive home and drugs are a huge concern along with assault among our youths. This crisis cause our youth to seek shelter either with gang members or on the street. Gangs and youth is another form of control. The gang lifestyle offer the youngster a stable family with a warm bed and a full stomach. Who wouldn’t do whatever it takes to keep a roof overhead? My community in California offer two of many programs geared at our juvenile delinquents. The first program is called Wind Youth Services. This program was started in 1994 by two sisters. The nuns rented a small place to help youth who ran away survive on the streets. They provided classes with basic survival skills and resources to break the homelessness cycle. The program provided more youth than space. In 2001 with the help of a Federal Grant, Wind Homeless Shelter was opened. It provided more classes and more volunteers and community outreach. In 2007, with the help of generous donors and outreach programs, Wind opened up a youth center for young people to come and do homework; get tutoring; job...

...Juvenile delinquency is a term given to juveniles who are under the age of 18 that have committed crimes from the petty crimes like vandalism, stealing to more sever crimes like murder. When people usually hear the word delinquent and juvenile together of course they immediately assume the individual must be a threat to society, but sometimes the child involved in criminal activity was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. What some people don’t realize is there is a reason why a child would take part in criminal activity whether it is rebelling, peer pressure, etc. Juveniles are defined as those who haven’t reached adulthood; in other words a juvenile is anyone under the age. The number of children in especially difficult circumstances is estimated to have increased from 80 million to 150 million between 1992 and 2000 (Unicef, 2003). Alyssa Bustamante was 15 years old when she stabbed and strangled Elizabeth Olten. Elizabeth was walking home from Alyssa’s half-sister’s home when she was lured in the woods by Alyssa. She would often post statements about hurting people and hurting herself. Alyssa is a product of the Foster care system. ...Reflection Paper: Importance of 180o Rule or Action Axis in TV and Film Production 180o Rule or Action Axis is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot from the opposite side is known as reverse angle.1 Below is diagram how the 180o Rule or Action Axis looks like: [pic] The said principle is also based on the exchange of looks between the actors, either from left to right (of camera) or right to left (of camera). Also, the 180 degree rule enables the audience to visually connect with unseen movement happening around and behind the immediate subject and is important in the narration of battle scenes.2 In my opinion, the principle of Action Axis is helpful in TV and film production when determining the camera positions for photographing two or more people. Also, it helps the cameras and people in front of the camera adjust their blockings for a better shot. Action Axis is I think, the most basic, effective, and must-learn principle that a media arts student must understand before doing a film. Without understanding this concept, one would find difficulty in shooting his film. For aesthetic purposes, I do think that the180o rule will help emphasize the facial expressions of the actors or talents and make the...

...1. Is it continuity editing? Please justify your answers through an analysis of the use of the 180 rule and cut justifications. (6 pts. – 50-150 words) Yes, it is a continuity editing. In this short clip, it contains 6 shots. This clip follows the 180 degree rule since it was shot at the same angle from the beginning to the end. The camera is being place at the same area all the time. Therefore, the main focus is always on the guy. In the clip, the expressive cuts are being used to express the idea of the outdoor living can be as good as indoor; not to mention at the end when the camera zooms out and shows the outdoor scene which links the whole idea together. ‘ 2. Please explain how mise en scène (setting, framing, costume, acting, lightning) and editing (music, shot duration, differences in shot sizes) are working together to visualize the ad’s message (please determine what this message is) (14 pts. – 350-500 words) In this clip, the use of mise en scene and editing is to convey the message that making outdoor living as comfortable as indoor living. First of all, the setting looks like the characters are dining in at home because of the depth of the field between the foreground and the background is close. It makes viewers think that they are sitting not far from the window of the house. The camera angle is shot at the eye level which viewers can easily picture themselves in the characters shoe. Also, the frame is cut on both side of the camera at the first 20 seconds...

...producer, the set and costume designers, camera and lighting people, editors and how they all interact to deliver a smooth flowing story that is in the classical Hollywood style. The seamless storytelling format depends on many variables. The set design can be very important and objects that are seen on camera can enhance and advance the narrative. Sometimes these objects are written in the script as objects to be used, while other times they are there merely to provide ambiance. The use of the camera and expressive shooting angles can also provide us with different views of the scene. A wide angle lens can show us the bigger picture as in a panoramic view of the whole scene. A rule that many Hollywood producers follow is the 180 degree rule in which the camera remains on the same side of an imaginary line which runs through the center of the scene. This insures continuity from one shot to the next and keeps the narrative flowing smoothly. The camera is not the only prop that is utilized to advance the narrative. The lighting also plays an important role in how we see the characters of the movie in a particular scene. Classical Hollywood style uses a three-point lighting system. This system uses many lights set up in a triangle around the subject. The key light(s) are pointed directly at the character. The fill lights are off to the side or...

...Field Sobriety Tests Troy Murrain CRJ 311: Forensics Professor Janice Bella September 15, 2013 A field sobriety test is often used by law enforcement to detect impairment from an individual or individuals they might suspect is driving under the influence. There are pros and cons using this field sobriety tests in which an individual can be prosecuted and not be over the alcohol limit because in certain aspects we have individuals failing the field sobriety tests such as the walk and turn DUI test and might have a physical impairment in which the accused individual cannot perform the “test” correctly. According to osbar.org, the term under the influence means it is illegal to drive with any degree of impairment that is caused by drugs or alcohol or a combination of both (www.osbar.org). According to osbar.org, the prosecutor does not need to prove that you were drunk or intoxicated in order to prove the offense of driving under the influence of intoxicants but instead you are guilty of the charge if you are merely affected to a noticeable degree by the intoxicant you have consumed if the intoxicant is alcohol, a controlled substance or a combination of both (www.osbar.org). The test is whether you lack the clarity of mind and physical control that you normally possess because of the intoxicant you have consumed (www.osbar.org). According to nhtsa.org, the walk and turn test is 68% accurate in determining whether...

...Diversion Programs CRJ 180 Diversion Programs One of the main reason Diversion programs were created is because many people believe juveniles deserve a second chance. These programs are generally created by state legislature and signed into law. Most states realize the many juveniles charged with low level offenses, and particularly first time offenders do not need to go through a regular court process. (Diversion Programs) This often saves the court system money and saves the juvenile from starting a criminal record. During the court hearing if juveniles opt to enter the diversion program they are usually diverted into a counseling program, and after a successful completion the court record is erased. The program focuses on counseling, behavior modification, and treatment. Juveniles must agree to attend classes and vocational training, participate in therapy or counseling, perform community service work, make restitution to any victim, and pay fines. (Diversion Programs) Typical diversion programs can last anywhere from six months to one year. If juveniles fail to complete the program or is discharged due to criminal behavior, the case returns to court for prosecution. Not every juvenile or crime qualifies for the diversion program. The crimes are limited to non-violent and low level such as possession of drugs, driving under the influence and petty theft. The juvenile must not have any prior convictions for the same crime they are charged with now and cannot have...

...Week 1 Paper Sergio Savain CRJ 180 Describe a few pieces of legislation or movements that shaped the treatment of juvenile offenders/delinquents. With all the reading and research on legislation towards juvenile offenders and delinquents I chose to elaborate and explain on how the 20th century shaped treatment for juvenile offenders. Congress enacted the Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act in 1974. This landmark legislation established JJDP to support local and state efforts to prevent delinquency and improve the juvenile justice system. From what I interpret from congress is in them passing this new 20th Century legislation is they were fully aware that prior legislations and laws prior to passing this legislation had major flaws in the system that didn’t truly protect and better serve juveniles and delinquents from the system. On November 2, 2002, Congress reauthorized the JJDP Act. The reauthorization the 21st Century Department of Justice Appropriations Authorization Act supports the JJDP’s established mission while introducing important changes that streamline the office operations and bring a sharper focus on its role to protect juveniles and delinquents. The provisions of the reauthorization took effect in October 2003. Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention had a couple of milestones that stood out to me that I would like to explain in detail below. 1974 Congress established the separation requirement. Which means a minor can legally separate him/her...

...Alternatives to Incarceration Nicole Kimble Professor White CRJ 180 December 4, 2015 In examining the underlying historical and economic reasons behind the quest for alternatives to incarcerating offenders in jails and prisons, “between 1972 and 2010, the United States prison population increased exponentially from fewer than 200,000 prisoners to more than 1.6 million. Including, jails, the United States now incarcerates approximately 2.3 million people on any given day. By 2012, one in 108 American adults had been incarcerated. During these decades, the contours of American exceptionalism expanded as the United States acquired the distinction of leading incarcerator of the world.” (Eaglin, J pp.1845) I would also like to add that the “Model Penal Code takes an important stride toward fundamental thinking as it refocuses economic sanctions around the goal of successful reintegration into society. There is reason to believe that the broader public and political has not similarly reoriented itself around this framework, despite the apparent shift towards rehabilitative reforms. Neorehabilitaive reforms maintain the dame framework of exclusion that created policies that increased prison populations even though the rhetoric of reform has changed. So to speak, “unless and until the public politicians develop the will to fund a reintegrative system, economic sanctions may be another alternative to incarceration implemented in the wrong way despite the ally’s efforts to the...

...An Analysis Of Mary Bell Strayer University CRJ 180 Professor Abreu At such a young age of eleven years, Mary Bell had nearly perfected the intricate, deceptive and disturbing superior intelligence outlining the characteristics of a psychopath. Her actions to rule her in such a category included the murders of two young boys, Martin Brown, age 4, and Brian Howe, age 3. Also uncovered throughout the investigation into her, it became known that, even before Martin’s death, Mary had physically hurt several other children. One of these incidences, she later admitted to pushing her cousin, a three-year-old boy, off a ledge several feet above the ground. The disturbingly keen wit Mary had developed sparked her to show initiative to find this boy behind some empty sheds near a pub, bleeding from the head. Incidentally, where she “found” him was right where she had left him. After murdering Brian Howe, Mary insistently wanted Brian’s older sister, Pat, to discover his lifeless body in order to shock her. Mary led his sister to the industrial area where many of the kids in the town often played among the construction materials, old cars, and dangerous wreckage. Mary even pointed out some large concrete blocks to Pat, encouraging her that that’s where her brother might be playing. Sure enough, later that night, the Newcastle Police found Brian’s body between the rocks, covered with grass and purple weeds. Brian Howe had been strangled; his thighs appeared to have puncture marks...
