...SYMBOLS Christian Symbols 1. Cross The Christian cross is the main symbol of the Christian religion. These crosses are usually found on Christian churches. The cross is the universal Christian symbol, acknowledged by all denominations as the single visual identifier of their faith. The meaning of the cross is a representation of Jesus Christ shedding his blood for the forgiveness of our sins. Therefore the cross is a symbol of the sacrifice so that Christians can have the reassurance that we will go to heaven through Christ. The cross is a symbol of Jesus Christ dying for the sake of human on behalf of their sins so that one day Christians may enter the kingdom of heaven and reside with the lord thy GOD. A great variety of crosses has developed, some with specific symbolic meaning and others that have simply become culturally associated with certain groups. | The simplest and most common Christian cross is the Latin cross. Keywords: Mixing; Miscible liquids; Electrical resistance tomography; Process tomography 1. Introduction Mixing is a common process in many industrial applications, but due to its complexity theoretical approaches are very limited. Monitoring or measuring the mixing properly is of great importance from the practical point of view and for the validation of theoretical models as well. In this work, the electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique has been adopted to obtain the mixture distribution across the cross-section of the mixing vessel. The ERT has attracted many researchers' interests in the field of the process tomography because of its obvious advantages including non-intrusive measurement, high temporal resolution and non-radiological characteristics [1]. Cross Cultural Perspective Nike

...Cross-Cultural Perspectives: Nike Student UoP Ethics 316 June 18, 2012 Week Five Dr. No Instructor Cross-Cultural Perspectives: Nike Nike Corporation grew from a local United States-based footwear distributor to a global marketing giant of athletic footwear, apparel, and equipment. This paper will provide an analysis of the ethical and social responsibility issues Nike must deal with as a global organization. Additionally, the paper will identify Nike’s ethical perspectives and present the exploration of these perspectives across cultures. Ethical and Social Responsibility Issues Nike began globalization through industrializing in countries, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia. The contracting by Nike of suppliers within these regions instantly began providing jobs, which at the time was just good enough to these improvised areas. However, by the end of the 90s Nike’s use of offshore manufacturing suppliers brought revelations of the sweatshop working conditions prevalent in these nations. The ethical responsibility issues Nike had as a challenge because of these sweatshop conditions ran the full gamut. For example Vietnam factories were violating the minimum wage and overtime laws, Cambodia was using child labor, and Malaysia even went as far as employing forced labor to ensure manufacturing requirements were met...

The Patent Pledge

...realized recently that we may be able to solve part of the patent problem without waiting for the government. I've never been 100% sure whether patents help or hinder technological progress. When I was a kid I thought they helped. I thought they protected inventors from having their ideas stolen by big companies. Maybe that was truer in the past, when more things were physical. But regardless of whether patents are in general a good thing, there do seem to be bad ways of using them. And since bad uses of patents seem to be increasing, there is an increasing call for patent reform. The problem with patent reform is that it has to go through the government. That tends to be slow. But recently I realized we can also attack the problem downstream. As well as pinching off the stream of patents at the point where they're issued, we may in some cases be able to pinch it off at the point where they're used. One way of using patents that clearly does not encourage innovation is when established companies with bad products use patents to suppress small competitors with good products. This is the type of abuse we may be able to decrease without having to go through the government. The way to do it is to get the companies that are above pulling this sort of trick to pledge publicly not to. Then the ones that won't make such a pledge will be very conspicuous. Potential employees won't want to work for them. And investors, too, will be able to see that they're the sort of company...

Starbucks Balanced Scorecard Analysis

...A monopoly can be defined as a market in which there is only one buyer. In the final section of intermediate microeconomics we have been discussing the impact that monopolies have on the competitive market. We have looked at how monopolies are able to charge a higher price for the products and services because they are the only seller in the market. One of the main goals of every company is to continue to gain market share over their competitors in order to increase shareholder profits and establish a solid foundation for a successful future. Firms that have established monopolies have a significant advantage to any company that tries to enter their market. Often times the cost of entering such markets blocks almost any firm from trying. As we will see, sometimes companies use patents as a way to block competitors from gaining market share. In an April 11, 2011 article written by John Scheller and Keneth Albridge III titled “The Patent Monopoly – more than a right to exclude,” they discussed how Google is using recently acquired patents in order to block competitors in the emerging cell phone technology market. The article says that many entrepreneurs often associate the value of patent rights with the ability to protect the patent owners position in a given market. They do this by demanding royalty payments from competitors or excluding them from the market altogether. Patents can also create value for firms by opening doors to other markets. Google recently acquired...

...Abstract This paper outlines and describes managerial guidelines for successful negotiations. It examines the steps a manager may take to ensure successful negotiations. Discuss the forces, including technology changes, which have fostered the development of global consumerism. Cite your sources. Keywords: Negotiation, International Marketing Managerial Guidelines for Successful Cross-Cultural Negotiations In international business, understanding the culture is the most important factor that determines success in that foreign market. This will be the foundation for the negotiations and should be addressed prior to any meetings. A company needs to combine the best aspects of each organization to the respective cultures in the foreign market. The negotiations will be successful if the negotiating parties establish an open relationship and gain mutual trust. Several factors to consider prior to negotiating in international business are minimizing distrust and stereotyping, overcome communication issues, and relationship development. (Ready) Minimizing distrust and stereotyping is a common issue that can deeply affect any negotiations. This can be rooted from the idea of assuming the values and mannerisms of the culture in the foreign market. For example, when McDonald’s decided to enter the market in India, they did not assume their beef burgers were going to be accepted in this mainly vegetarian environment. They did their research and...

Memory

...The Power of Memory It never seizes to amaze me how different colors, tastes, smells, and sounds can take us back to an event in our lives long forgotten. Its astounding how we can recall events with such clarity, though sometimes our memories are tainted with the hue of the dominant emotion we may have felt at the time. We look at our present through the memories of our past experiences. Scanning through different stations on the radio, it seems like all the stations are playing the same songs. A particular tune catches my attention and I wait to hear the lyrics. Its Barbara Striesand singing one of her hits from the seventies, the song’s title is ‘memories’. Speaking of which, my mind drifts off to the time when I was four years old and unable to sleep at night, I had sneaked out of my room to see whether anyone was up, to find my parents sitting with dimmed lights, listening to this same song. I remember thinking then that they were being romantic, and I was not supposed to be there. Feeling left out; I quickly started to complain of a fake stomachache and how I needed someone to read me a story to be able to sleep. It was a fruitless endeavor, I was sent to bed - no story - just a lecture on how all the good children must be asleep and I was still up. I relate the story to my brother, who is complaining about why I’m listening to such ancient music and should put his ‘hip hop’ station on. He changes the station. My thoughts are rudely interrupted by...

...ine Different sociological views on changes in the experience of childhood in the past 50 years (24 marks) According to Aries (1962), childhood can be defined as a social construction. Children were once regarded as ‘little adults’ and an economic asset rather than a symbol of love due to the high death rates making it hard to emotionally invest. However, now, according to Pilcher, a key aspect of childhood is ‘separateness’ from adulthood. Aries definition of childhood as a social construction can be supported by cross-cultural differences and more specifically Punch (2001). Punch studied children in Bolivia and found that at age 5 children were expected to work and take on responsibilities. This cultural variation shows childhood to be a social construction as if it were biological everyone would have the same experiences. There have been several state policies that have constructed and defined childhood, one of which is the children’s act which aimed to give children more rights to make a positive contribution to society. It argues the best place to raise children is at home with their parents which brought about the social view that it is essential for children to spend time with immediate family in order to grow up to be independent. In addition to this, another state policy was the Factory Act which saw the removal of young children from work, strict hours placed upon adolescents and compulsory education put into place. This effected society by presenting...

India’s approach to Standard Essential Patents | 12 | 6. Conclusion | 12 | INTRODUCTION Indian jurisprudence on fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) licensing practices for standard-essential patents (SEPs) is at a relatively nascent stage. Unlike U.S. and EU courts, which have dealt with cases concerning calculating a FRAND royalty for a considerable time, Indian courts and the Indian antitrust authority—the Competition Commission of India (CCI)—have only just begun to decide such cases. In its initial orders in the first two antitrust complaints concerning SEPs, the CCI seemed to favor using the smallest salable patent-practicing component (SSPPC) as the royalty base to determine a FRAND royalty. However, in the short time since the CCI’s orders, the Delhi High Court has rendered contrary decisions in two SEP infringement suits. The Delhi High Court’s decisions use the value of the downstream product as a royalty base and rely on comparable licenses to determine a FRAND royalty. The Delhi High Court’s decisions are not only consistent with sound economic principles...

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: We can apply multiple project management concepts to planning the project, scheduling the project, and controlling the project. First, the project was planned and scheduled by setting a goal of completion. Considering the group’s total allotted time, our goal was to have the description of the game strategy completed 48 hours before the deadline, and to work collaboratively on the statistical spreadsheet 24 hours before the deadline. The game strategy was divided amongst team members (work break-down) within the group in a classroom setting. After defining the objective of the assignment, two team members worked together on question 2, and two team members worked separately on questions 1, 3, and 4. The fifth question in the game strategy was d givided between all five team members, and solutions were collected in one spreadsheet using Google Docs. Second, during Phase 2 of the Littlefield Technologies game, each team member will rotate equal turns monitoring and controlling the processing system every 3 to 4 hours every day during the 4-day phase. Revisions made to the system will be decided as a group, and implementation will be communicated through e-mail. Considering previous experiences in group projects, communication is imperative in the successful completion of the Littlefield Technologies Game. Every group member...

Wendy Peterson Case Analysis

...Another reason for our communication problem could be the different cultural background we have and our opposite personalities. I believe employees should be able to connect to their leader to become good followers. I think I am extrovert and should be able to get closer to him over time but there are some other issues that I need to address immediately. I have a problem with Wu’s performance inconsistencies his vision of how things should be done, obviously conflicting with my leadership style. He definitely is able to do “as I say” but not willing - he does not keep daily contact, works outside the office more than normal and his various meetings usually conflict with AccountBack activities and meetings. I do not know if this is based on cross cultural differences or situational leadership. I definitely should consider a mismatch of leadership style and development level of my subordinate. I should reconsider my participating approach towards my employees. It definitely worked for our branch and the financial results are proving it but most of the salesmen were new to the company. In case of salesmen with more experience and high readiness to do the work and accomplish results I should lower relationship behavior and delegate more duties. Low level of cooperation that we have causes a competition between us and solving the conflict could come only after compromising with each other, accommodating our expectations and collaborating to achieve our...
