...Abstract In this paper, I will explain what CrossFit Training is and what the benefits are compared to a typical exercise program of isolated muscular training combined with a cardio workout. I will also examine the impacts that CrossFit Training has had on college athletes and athletic teams as a whole at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (UPB). I will look into what teams have the most athletes with experience with CrossFit training, how many UPB athletes have used it on their own time or during the offseason, and the general feeling towards CrossFit Training and its effectiveness in improving fitness. Introduction In the physical fitness realm, there are many different kinds of exercise programs. There are programs that focus on dancing, ones that focus on stretching, and ones that focus on core strength and conditioning. CrossFit Training is an example of a core strength and conditioning program. It was developed to enhance an individual’s overall ability to complete physical tasks by incorporating many different forms of exercise, from gymnastics to weightlifting (Glassman, 2002). CrossFit Training is different from the popularly accepted idea of a workout because it’s not just situps, curls, leg press, and a half an hour of cardio. CrossFit is all about combining movements and shorter, high intensity cardiovascular sessions (Glassman, 2002). For every long distance effort, a CrossFit athlete will do five or six at a short distance. This is implemented...

...Through partaking in CrossFit workouts, I feel as though I have significantly improved my physical health. For further improvement I have set in place certain goals for myself in cardio, weightlifting, and gymnastics. In Cardio, I would like to improve my mile (1600 meter run) from 7:18 to 7:00. I would also like to improve my 500 meter row from 2:08 to 2:00. Both of these require strong core strength so in order to improve, I could do superman lifts and superman holds. Other exercises which I will work on to improve my cardiovascular endurance include sit ups, single jumps, plank holds, Also, to achieve my goals in running, I should pay better attention to and practice my technique while focusing on leaning forward more. For weightlifting,...

...CrossFit was created and developed by Greg Glassman, a gymnast who wanted to improve his gymnastic skills and increase his strength more than just completing body weight workouts. He began incorporating weights in his workouts and noticed he began to surpass his competition. Using weights into his gymnastic workouts and integrating aerobic exercises like running and cycling Glassman developed the idea of a CrossFit training program. According to international athlete and Olympic coach Ross Edgley, “[CrossFit] was intended to improve 10 physical qualities… cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, coordination, balance, and accuracy” (Edgley, “CrossFit: Sports Science”). Essentially, CrossFit...

...started doing CrossFit. I wanted to lose some weight and get in shape, but at that time I never knew how CrossFit would become so important to me, and how it has become part of my life. Before I joined a CrossFit box - how CrossFit gyms are called - I played basketball in my school. I wanted to do physical training, so I would be more competent and athletic for the basketball season.A friend of mine and I, who also wanted to try Crossfit, went to the nearest box we could find and did the trial class. I felt horrible and amazing at the same time. Horrible because I felt exhausted after doing the workout, but amazing because the sensation I felt after doing giving everything I could be something unique that I never felt before. After that day I knew I could get really good at the sport so I signed up at that box and started training approx three to four times a day. Crossfit is the sport of fitness, which involves three main areas: Olympic weightlifting,...

...Mahoney 1 Billie-Marie Mahoney Professor Charles Daniel English 111 October 18, 2012 Explaining a Concept: The Controversy with Crossfit Crossfit has become one of the most popular forms of fitness and exercise that has ever been part of this earth. For most people who have joined, it has also become a way of life. It is the main strength and conditioning program for many police academies and FBI, State Police, military special operations units, martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes all across the world. Crossfit has been developed to assist athletes in achieving a high level of fitness in endurance, strength, flexibility, speed, agility, power, coordination, and accuracy. Therefore; one may ask why it has become so controversial. Greg Glassman developed Crossfit, Inc. in 2000 and since then, the hype about Crossfit has exploded. In 2010, Reebok signed a 10 year deal with Crossfit to come together and try to reinvent the way people around the world achieve fitness. Crossfit, Inc. licenses’ their name “Crossfit” to affiliates around the world for a yearly fee and also puts each trainer through a series of trainings and certifications to certify each owner and trainer. There is a two day training course for beginners and specialty seminars which include gymnastics, Olympic lifting, running, mobility, programs for pregnant woman, kids, and military forces. Once licensed, the affiliate then develops their own...

...Many schools have moved to WOD- based PE rather than the traditional sports- based PE. This is because WOD- based PE builds a community of trainers within the class that all help each other to become better. Schools have found that WOD- based physical education is better on the brain and improves grades. The expectations are high because “...kids will step up to the challenge” (Tis Nobler in the Mind ---and Body). Crossfit creates an environment where students do not judge each other and are all doing the workout to their best abilities. I also noticed that coaching each other was a very important aspect of sustaining the positive environment in the class. I have learned so much this year in PE because of the crossfit part of it. Another reason...

...Professor Triolo, For the multimedia project, I elected to use my proposal argumentative essay because of its relevance and ability to be visually depicted. I believe in the idea that CrossFit is a scientific formula which has naturally evolved into a sport. This is because the formula is tough to carry out even though it is very effective and efficient. Whenever crew of people work ridiculously hard together, there is a positive outcome. This is why teammates on championship dynasties are so tight-knit and successful businesses create lasting friendships. Tackling tough tasks brings people together, so CrossFit brings people together, just like any other sport. Based on this information, I believe that this is something worthwhile and valid...

Most people who partake in crossfit, could easily agree that crossfit slowly becomes an addiction of your own...a very good one of course, once you start you can’t ever stop. Community; multiple people of the same interests’ come together as supporters for one another. Three years ago when I first became a member of “Portcrossfit”, everything had changed. When someone just starts out with crossfit, it almost feels impossible to complete a workout. Just when you think you can't finish and giving up is your only option, every single one of your teammates are surrounding you, screaming, clapping and pushing you to finish and suddenly, the pain just goes away and you feel invincible. The relationships built with everyone at...
