...Do you know the Holocaust of Jews during WWII? How about the Nanking Massacre? The similar tragedy happened in China but was forgotten by majority of the Western society. It is a time to do something to remember it. The Nanking Massacre is a six-week mass murder and rape committed by Japanese soldiers in Nanjing, the then-capital city in China. After approximately three months’ hard battle, Shanghai fell in November in 1937. Imperial Japanese Army then marched into Nanjing and started a ruthless slaughter of around 300, 000 Chinese civilians on December 13th, 1937. Countless Chinese were killed in cruel ways while women, even girls were raped. It is a symbolic event of the Asian-Pacific war. As important factors of analyzing and evaluating the history, success and failure are both shown through the Nanking Massacre. It is a success of national spirits and united international community but a failure of humanity and political structures. ...The events of the “Rape of Nanking” The raping of nanking is the most unknown event in history. The rape of nanking was an example of gendercide against men & women . It’s mainly known for the mistreatment done to the women. They were brutally injured ,traumatized or killed. Defenseless men were made POWs, murdered or used for bayonet practice. They were also burned and buried alive. The raping of nanking violates human rights because no one is subjected to torture or cruel inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment. This event violated article 5. (Source 8) Japan & China had several feuds prior to this incident. Japan and China went to war in 1884 to gain control of China’s trading ports. Between 1899 and 1907 a city called the Hague in netherlands agreed to to prohibit the mistreatment of POWs and civilians. By the 1930s Japan thought it was their destiny to conquer China. Refugees tried to escape crossing the Yangtze river. Due to no transportation they were trapped on the east bank, many tried to swim across. Japanese soldiers arrived firing several shots. The people of China felt like it was the war against Japanese aggression and not World War II. China felt like it was a personal attack because the Japanese were so cruel and evil. Till this day China feels like Japan has downplayed the senseless murders and rapes by calling them an “incident.” Thus, here it is over seventy years later and China and Japan have totally different stories of the event that took place. I will discuss how Japan’s lack of empathy towards China has fostered deep wounds for both countries. What are the primary issues that separate China and Japan? The main issues that separate China and Japan primarily “concern the way the two governments, particularly the Japanese government, look at and handle Japan's aggression against China and its other Asian neighbors, and other related issues from the War, such as the chemical weapons abandoned by Japanese troops in China.
