...CHAPTER 10 Responsible Business Debate: Is Technology Healthy for Society? Issue: What are the benefits and drawbacks of technology to social interaction? While technology has brought advancements, conveniences, and efficiencies to our lives, some critics wonder if the benefits outweigh the costs, especially those that are transforming the ways we communicate, connect with other people, solve problems, and generally interact as human beings. In other words, are we losing the relationships that have made the United States a great place to live and work? In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville visited the United States on behalf of the French government. He set out to study the prison system, but ended up writing a grand treatise, Democracy in America. In his book, de Tocqueville noted how Americans were dedicated to social cohesion, equality, common purpose, and concern for both individuals and the community. Years later, writers on the topic of social capital, mentioned in Chapter 2, drew from de Tocqueville’s work to describe the American approach to community service, active neighborhood associations, and other types of civic engagement. Recent studies, however, indicate civic engagement is declining. Is technology part of the problem? Consider these daily occurrences: Students do not talk to classmate after class, as they are quick to begin texting people they already know. People on the subway rarely acknowledge the riders they see every day, because they are busy checking...

...sustainability report considers the contribution and impact that non-financial issues have on the company, it can range from Governance to Climate Change. It is a complex concept, but in summary it is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. – www.sustain.ucla.edu Recently reporting on certain sustainability issues have now become mandatory to report – “UK government announces that under the Companies Act 2006, companies are now required to report their emissions in their directors’ report”. * Why is it important Along with the recent introduction of the G4 standards and the GRI recommendations, the significance of a sustainability report has become progressively more critical as pressures on companies both publically and institutionally to provide and publish reports increases in light of recent natural disasters. It is said that we “use about 40% more resources every year compared to what we put back”, some companies make it their mission to make it known that they give back to the environment e.g. Velvet. There is a need for a measurement system to be put in place to assess industry’s impact however currently accounting is inadequate for numerous reasons. - - http://ezproxy.bcu.ac.uk:2055/science/article/pii/S0155998210000128 The increase in awareness has meant that external users e.g. customers, investors and even shareholders are making decisions based on these reports. Detailed reports may...

...Corporate Social Responsibility, Course 2016 FE1 EDHEC Nice Tutorial 3 BP, Deepwater and Sustainability Reporting The Deepwater Horizon oil rig fire and explosion on April 20, 2010, killed 11 men and caused one of the largest marine oil spills in history. The leak from the undersea well flowed for 87 days and polluted an estimated 68,000 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico waters and nearly 500 miles of coastline from Louisiana to Florida. At the moment of the accident BP was the leaseholder and operator of the Maconda well located off the coast of Louisiana. The company was ultimately responsible for conducting operations there safely and in respect of the environment. BP hired Transocean Ltd (the owner of the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon) to provide the vessel and drilling crew to implement BP’s operations of the Maconda well. 1 Investigations established that bad management on the Deepwater Horizon resulted in poor safety on the rig. The US chemical safety board concludes that a last-ditch safety device on the underwater well had multiple failures and wasn't tested properly. It found that the cause of the initial explosion involved multiple screw-ups with cement, drilling mud, fluid pressure, botched tests, management problems and poor decisions. The blowout preventer sealed the well temporarily, but then it failed and that caused the massive spill. 1 For a description of BP’s implication in the Deepwater Horizon accident you can also read Cherry...
