C ontinuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is a quality management process that encourages all health care team members to continuously ask the questions, “How are we doing?” and “Can we do it better?” To address these questions, our practice needs structured clinical and administrative data. EHRs can, if properly designed and implemented, capture these data resourcefully, thereby transforming patient care in ways that might have been difficult or impossible with paper records alone. Applying CQI to a practice’s EHR implementation means that the health care team must understand what works and what does not work in the current state and how the EHR will change care delivery.
