Cu Chulainn has some interesting stories, especially the one in which he obtained his name. He slayed Culann’s guard dog and then promised to protect his house until he had a dog that was capable of protecting his house. His name means Culann’s hound, which to me sounds like a name that you would not want to have, since he is being referred to as a dog. But as I thought about it he must have gotten used to the name and then accepted it. The stories involving Emer and Aife also interest me. The one with Aife is a story that I do not think any other stories are similar. He is in battle with Aife who is a woman, and in most older stories women are never in battle. He is victorious and spares her life with the agreement that she bears him a son. But later on he kills his son because he thought he was an intruder. That just surprised me because as I was reading I imagined that story going a completely different direction. Next the story of Cu Chulainn overtaking Forgall’s fortress to be interesting. The reason being that Forgall is the one who sent Cu Chulainn away, which gave him the skills to do what he did. So rather than Forgall giving up his daughter he ended up losing everything including his life. The part about Cu Chulainn that I found most interesting was the one where Cu Chulainn fights off Medb’s champions. It reminded me of Horatius Cocles who defended a bridge single handedly, which was one of my favorite ancient stories. Cu Chulainn was to me a very interesting hero and I can see why his stories are still told in Eire today.

Ireland

...Reviving and even Invention Tradition was a major aspect of Irish Nationalism What we know of history is only what we are told and shown. The idea of reviving and inventing tradition in Ireland shows us how history can be manipulated by its tellers in order to suit their cause. Inventing tradition as described by Eric Hobsbawm is ‘A set of practices, normally governed by overtly or tacitly accepted rules and of a ritual or symbolic nature which seek to inculcate certain values and norms of behaviour by repetition, which automatically implies continuity with the past’ – Hobsbawm, Reading 5.1 p176, Tradition and Dissent. It also includes preserving or showing only specific aspects of a history that align with the individual or groups specific cause and encourages specific beliefs about the past that it wants people to have. The British conquest of Ireland was a gradual process which began in 1169, and by 1603 the whole of Ireland was under British rule. It was the belief of the Irish nationalists that Ireland should rule itself. After many years the Irish nationalists won independence from Britain in 1922. Reviving and Inventing tradition was important both prior to gaining this independence, and after gaining independence. Throughout the century prior to Ireland gaining its independence the nationalists were united in the goal to establish that the country of Ireland had a rich and ancient culture. Thomas Davis was an Irish Nationalist who lived from 1814 until 1845...

Fate Fate Fate

...Sajyou Ayaka  【Status】 Addresses self as: “Watashi” Master Rank: Rank 7–Princes Magecraft: General black magic (Witchcraft). Is bad at cultivating medicinal plants. Strangely, is close with crows. Magic Circuit/Quality: C Magic Circuit/Quantity: C Magic Circuit Composition: Normal 【Comment from Takeuchi Takashi】 Although she has quiet and inconspicuous behavior, in truth she could be said to be a virtuous heroine character. Without her glasses, both her eye color and hair color become brighter. 【Explanation】 The protagonist. At first glance is quiet and melancholic. On the inside is tsun-tsun and aggressive. Because of her appearance, her past, and the fact that she has little skill as a magus, or perhaps because she has a complex about being a magus, she always acts frightened around other people. Haughty at home but meek outside. At home she acts self-assured. (When like this she is similar to Rin from Fate/stay night, but she isn’t brimming with confidence like Rin. Rather, she acts more like a child) Because her older sister who departed the world 8 years ago was a genius, she has a complex about her ordinariness. Although her father, who also died 8 years ago, told her “There will be a day when you, too, participate in the Holy Grail War”, she was absolutely unwilling, and ran. When she was about to be killed by Lancer, she summoned Saber. Because he saved her, she had no choice but to participate in the Holy Grail War. During the War, her personality...
