Factors That Influence the Reproduction of Sea Cucumbers

...echinoderm class Holothuroidea consists of sea cucumbers, which can be described as worm-like organisms with elongated, soft bodies. Like most echinoderms, holothuroids have 5 rows of tube feet along their bodies. These tube feet aid the animal in attachment, locomotion and respiration (Pearse et al. 1987). Within the class Holothuroidea, there are about 1250 species, and these are distributed among 200 genera (Smiley et al. 1991). There is much variety among the habitats in which sea cucumbers reside. Some species, like Cucumaria fallax, inhabit quiet, still waters, while others, such as C. miniata, are found in areas that are constantly swept by tidal currents (McEuen 1988). Some holothuroids are tropical reef dwellers (Uthicke 1997); others live in temperate or polar waters (Hamel and Mercier 1995). Even the depth at which these animals can be found varies greatly. Many species live within the intertidal zone, but a few sea cucumbers live deep in the ocean, some among hydrothermal vents (Smirnov et al. 2000). Regardless of the environment in which they are found, sea cucumbers have become highly adapted to life in that environment, especially in their reproductive cycles. Sea cucumbers can reproduce through sexual reproduction as well as asexual reproduction. Each mode of reproduction has several environmental factors that have been proposed to control its timing. This paper will first introduce the two types of reproduction found in sea cucumbers. I will then discuss some of the factors...

My Essay On Touch By Bethany Heitman

...to expand and write about to my peer editor. I know how much I loved the scent of homemade cookies, thanksgiving dinners, certain perfumes and more but I did not know what to write about. The topic I chose to write about came from one of my roommates while she was reading a magazine and thought of me. It was something that sparked my interest immediately. I love reading about little things that grab my attention and this one I found to be interesting and my partner would enjoy as well. Writer Bethany Heitman from the magazine Cosmopolitan states, ‘…fascinating news: Researchers have discovered that the smell of cucumber-that’s right, cucumbers- makes women aroused’ (p. 193). Who would have thought that this fresh smelling fruit with their hint of a mild sweetness and bitterness would make your female partner so aroused? Automatically I was hooked on why cucumbers and other foods increased pleasure during sexual encounters....

Protein

...Protein This paper will discuss how proteins contribute to a balanced diet and the discoveries I made when I consciously monitored my caloric intake and specifically the proteins contained within the total intake of calories. Protein is found in every cell in your body and is a necessary part of our diet. Two to three servings of protein each day will help you get the necessary amount of protein, which can help your body's cells and tissues function properly. Protein is an important part of nutrition and different animal and plant sources of protein provide different types of amino acids Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are used to replace old proteins in cells and tissues that have been broken down and need to be replaced. Proteins are biological polymers composed of amino acids. Amino acids, linked together by peptide bonds, form a polypeptide chain. One or more polypeptide chains twisted into a 3-D shape form a protein. Proteins have complex shapes that include various folds, loops, and curves. Folding in proteins happens spontaneously Proteins are made up of amino acids, and they are the “building blocks” of life. Our skin, muscles, tendons, cartilage, even hair and nails, are all because of protein. Protein helps form enzymes, hormones, antibodies and new tissues. It transports important nutrients in and out of those cells. There are nine amino acids known as “essential” amino acids, and therefore must be derived from what we eat. Arginine classified as...

Paper Charcoal

...Prakrit Khamduangdao was looking for an alternative to agricultural chemicals to control pests in his vegetable farm. However, he was not completely satisfied with various botanical pest control measures being promoted in northern Thailand. He reports that even though certain natural insect repellents were beneficial, their effects were too limited. Additionally, finding adequate amounts of necessary raw plant materials and processing them into sprays was laborious and time consuming. When Mr. Prakrit first heard about wood vinegar in 2000 he was intrigued. Compelled by the idea of a natural by-product of charcoal production that can control pests and diseases of crops, he bought his first bottle. Having used the product, Mr. Prakrit was pleased with the ease of mixing and application. Ultimately, after observing much fewer insect pests and fungal diseases on his crops, he became convinced of the effectiveness of wood vinegar. Not long afterwards, Mr. Prakrit became self sufficient in producing both charcoal and wood vinegar with a 200-liter horizontal drum kiln. He has been an advocate of wood vinegar ever since. Wood vinegar (pryoligneous liquor) is rapidly gaining acceptance as an essential Asian natural farming input. Reported agricultural use as a fertilizer and growth-promoting agent goes back to the 1930s, making the product a relatively new innovation. Uses of Wood Vinegar According to Thailand’s Department of Agriculture, wood vinegar has the following...

The Honeybee

...Norwood Hodges Mr. Connell English 9 14 February 2014 The Astonishing Creature There are tons of astounding creatures in this world. Ones of different size, shape, and color. Yet, the one most humans do not think about is the honeybee. A quick Google search of honey bee defines the insect as, “a stinging winged insect that collects nectar and pollen, produces wax and honey, and lives in large communities. The honeybee was domesticated for its honey and usually lives in hives.” While researching information about the honeybee I realized just how helpful and interesting the insect is. However, they can be a huge burden. My goal in this paper is to state accurate information and inform a reader about the unique creature, the honeybee. Honeybees are important to our wold. Not only are they one of the biggest pollinators, they also provide some people with food and a source of income. They live in large colonies called hives. In those hives there are millions of bees, called worker bees. Worker bees are female honeybees that are not sexually developed. It takes approximately twenty days for an egg to hatch. After the first three days of being birthed the egg turns into larvae. They older and mature worker bees take care of the larvae, feeding it royal jelly, pollen, and honey. Royal jelly is the leakage of the bees that provides the larvae with the nutrients they need. The worker bees tend to larvae and forage for food. They forage for three main types of food: honey...

Sensitive Skin

...Sensitive Skin: It is a Growing Problem and We Should Create Products to Help Customers Combat the Issue Have you ever tried a product for the first time and had some type of reaction to it? Well on average, 4 out of 10 women do have a reaction to new skin care or cosmetic products (Kligman, 2006). As one of the world leaders in the beauty industry, we should provide products for all skin types, even the most sensitive. Recent studies have shown that customers are worrying more about what they put on their skin and the possible reactions they will have. Customers want to know the products are made for their sensitive skin, but will also give them the type of results they come to expect from our brand. One of our competitors, Clinique, offers products that are gentle on the skin and do not contain some of the more popular irritants (Why Clinique, 2013). We need to figure out a way to gain the customers of our competitors and have them enjoy our products for what they offer to their skin. This study will help us understand the exact customer we want to reach as well as what they are looking for in their products. We will then be able to determine if we can move into the production phase and when the products are finished, where they should be sold. Problem Statement As more and more consumers are becoming health conscious, they are worry about their skin. In order to have healthy skin, you should wash, tone, and moisturize daily. For those with sensitive skin, it could be...
