The culling of sharks is not the only way to ensure that the ocean is safe. Sharks have populated the earth for over four hundred million years and now, people want to remove them from our oceans because they are perceived as a threat [Williamson, 2015]. By pushing the introduction of shark culls, allowing people to freely kill sharks in an appalling manner, the lives of many shark species are threatened. Most people know little to nothing about sharks, despite what is depicted in the media. If sharks are eliminated, who will keep the ocean ecosystem balanced? Without sharks the structure of the ocean’s ecosystem will collapse, causing the demise of important fish species, coral reefs and other marine life. A removal study of eleven shark species on the east coast of the United States, proved that by eliminating sharks in the ocean, other species become uncontrollable. Twelve out of fourteen species in the area where the sharks were removed did so. One of the species, a type of eagle ray, destroyed all the bay scallops in the range. This caused the level of water quality to decrease as the scallops were no longer there to filter clean water [University of Miami, 2007]. The removal of sharks in no way will keep the ocean safe, however, will cause a negative spiral effect on the underwater environment. Even predatory sharks are vital within the ocean, they prey on the injured, weak or eat the dead carcasses from the ocean floor. Their preying habits of eliminating and keeping the ocean safe from the spread of illness and lethal outbreaks among species.
