Culture & Media Assignment
Comm-1050/TEACHERS NAME

INTRODUCTION Media has changed an incredible amount over decades and even every year. The media will continue to grow unless people stop using it, which let’s be honest, will never happen. In my life I have seen how the media has grown, changed, and progressed. There were parts of the media that really drew me in as if I was a part of it while other parts did not have any interest on me. At times there were even some median that I did not even know was out there. Culture and media had significant changes from when I was in Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, High School, and now College. What I found interesting as I looked back was not only did the culture and the media change, but what interested me and the media that caught my attention also changed.
PRESCHOOL & ELEMENTARY MEDIA In my preschool years I don’t recall the culture and the media having an influence on me, I don’t even recall the media at all. The media to me was my family and my friends. Going to school and putting on school plays and productions. Sports were the biggest culture and media that was affecting me during this time. Whenever Halloween came around if I wasn’t dressed as a professional dirt bike rider or as a professional baseball player then I wasn’t a “cool” kid. I did believe that if I dressed the part then that portrayed who I actually was or could be. When elementary came my feelings changed a bit, but not much. During this point in my life the media still had not been a big influence on my life and the largest culture influence that I saw or that was in my life was my family. At that time in my life my big brother was my culture and media influence. Everything that he did or said I wanted to do or say. Somewhere inside my body I did believe that if I did what he and his friends did and if I acted the way that

Week 1 Assignment-Media and Culture Theory

...In the world today the media has a major impact on individuals who are involved in it. Rather it be through the radio, television, or the internet the majority of individuals have access to this and are susceptible to the impact that it has. There are many theories that define the relations between individuals and the impact that media has. One theory out there is based off of a learning theory. This theory is the Social Cognitive Theory, and it revolves around the “functions and processes of observational learning. By observing others’ behaviors, including those of media figures, one may develop rules to guide one’s own subsequent actions prompted to engage in previously learned behavior” (Nabi & Oliver 2010). Media directly influences individuals simply by the viewers watching or listening to the media and picking up the behavior of that media.  According to Bandura (1986, 2002), “observational learning is guided by four processes. Attention to certain models and their behavior is affected by source and contextual features such as attractiveness, relevance, functional need, and affective valence. Second, retention processes focus on the ability to symbolically represent the behavior observed and its consequences, along with any rehearsal of that sequence. The third is production, which focuses on translating the symbolic representations into action, reproducing the behavior in seemingly appropriate contexts, and correcting for any errors based on the feedback received....

Hum 176 Final Assignment

...Part 1: As a news director of a local television station, it is my duty to make my lead story about what is happening in the community. A celebrity’s death is important to many, but the parks closing three days a week will affect my audience more. When reporting news, you should always think about the effects of the community and not the ratings. Rating matter, but not as much as people seem to think they should. Today’s headline is that the city council has just voted to close all city parks for three days a week to save money. I think we should get together and do a fundraiser to allow our children to play at the park when us adults need a break. They will probably close these parks from Saturday to Monday. These days are two of the days that children are not in school. What about our younger children not old enough for school. Many take their children to the park in the morning time, while the school-age children are at school. “Why do we need to save money at a city park, anyway?” City parks are free for the children to play anytime during the day. I think we need to protest the city council’s decision. “Don’t you think so?” Next on discussion today is that Whitney Houston has died. They ...

...perfect definition by purchasing Public Relations for Dummies from Amazon. This gave me a better understanding of what it was all about but it was still very difficult to grasp a short punctual definition of what Public Relations stands for. ‘What is PR?’ was the title for my first lecture which filled me with ease as I then became aware that I probably wasn’t meant to start university knowing exactly what public relations stood for. As the lecture went on it became apparent that actually defining Public Relations is a very difficult task and that there are many definitions, however a main word that comes up again and again when describing public relations is ‘communicating’. Entry 2 Week 2 I have had my first lecture on the module ‘Media and Cultural Landscapes’ finding it challenging and difficult to get my head around but on the other hand extremely interesting. Marxism was a critical theory that we talked about very briefly and as I don’t know a lot about Marxism I wrote down that I needed to research into this to have a better understanding of what it means to Public Relations. My research led me to find the time in which Marxist ideology developed and I was able to get to grips with the current state of affairs that America was in, for example, they still had slaves and women didn’t have the right to vote anywhere. From looking at the...
