...previous pencil grade). Barring any late or other penalties, you have the chance to improve the grade on this project, if you choose to revise it for the portfolio. The Assignment and Rationale: For this project, you are required to find three legitimate, same-genre movie posters from the last decade and write a report revealing your genre awareness findings and conclusions about both the stability and flexibility of the movie genre represented in these three posters. You may choose the movie genre, and you may find that you’re working with a multi-hyphenated genre (e.g., thriller-crime-drama). This is fine, as long as you can find three movie posters that represent this particular genre. However, I advise you to not go too obscure in your choices, as this might limit or make difficult your selection, and I also request you stay away from choosing posters for movies already clearly linked (e.g., sequels, trilogies). I encourage you to consider the country of origin for the movies and posters, as this will alter/change the content of the poster. For the sake of uniformity, please use the U.S./English version of a movie poster. The movie poster functions as a shorthand version of all that the movie is trying to represent or...

...Communications Europa Europa Report The movie Europa Europa is nothing like the movie Europa Report, which is the movie I was going to watch for this assignment, before my know it all girlfriend decided it wasn’t “multicultural” enough. The film should not be confused with the 1991 Lars von Trier film Europa, which was initially released as Zentropa in the United States to avoid such a confusion. Europa Europa is directed by the young European director Agnieszka Holland, who previously directed the films Angry Harvest, and To Kill A Priest, and would later go on to direct such films as In Darkness and Burning Bush a three part miniseries which aired on the premium cable channel HBO this year. After doing a good amount of reading on Wikipedia, I am a big fan of the director, despite not knowing anything about the director, nor having seen any of his movies. My girlfriend insists the director is a woman, and begrudgingly I admit to her that she is in fact correct. This is a gender bias I have displayed unwittingly, and a multicultural stereotype of men directing war movies that I have internalized. I recognize that this is a negative bias. Dark sided. I have displayed a misogynistic tendency here in this situation. Irregardless, the female director has quite the repertoire of Nazi war movies. I am ready to accept her for who she is and empathize. I will probably have to empathize for the next three or four hours for a myriad of different reasons. The movie Europa Europa is not a...

...1. Define Whistle blowing. Whistle blowing is when a worker reports suspected wrongdoing at work. Officially this is called ‘making a disclosure in the public interest’. A worker can report things that aren’t right, are illegal or if anyone at work is neglecting their duties, including: someone’s health and safety is in danger, damage to the environment, a criminal offence, the company isn’t obeying the law (like not having the right insurance), covering up wrongdoing. https://www.gov.uk/whistleblowing 2. What are the positive and negative aspects of whistle blowing based from the movie? Every organization desires honesty amongst their employees. Such an element allows for complete dedication to the organization's mission, and success. By encouraging a whistle blowing culture within the organization, the organization promotes, transparent structure and effective, clear communication. More importantly, whistle blowing can protect the organization's clients. Whistle blowing, also, is a necessary facet within an organization. Without it, fraud, misconduct, and failure become prominent within an organization. In the case of the movie, Salt, the guy that was interviewed by Evelyn Salt and was heard by another CIA’s, the guy bear false-witness against Evelyn and she was accused of being a Russian Spy. I didn’t see anything positive aspects of whistle blowing in the movie since the whistle blower was from outside of the business. It may be not telling and only accusing someone...

...new product concept that reflected a niche opportunity. The main objective of the Z3 launch was to reposition their German-made, driving performance, tradition bound, and precision engineering cars as more stylish and fun to drive cars in the American culture. This risky movement of changing the brand personality was done using both nontraditional and traditional marketing tools. Some of the nontraditional methods used were movie placement, Neiman Marcus Catalog offer, BMW internet site with “Build-Your-Own-Roadster” module, Press launch in Central Park and Jay Leno Tonight Show. Traditional methods such as TV and Print advertising were also used, while maintaining the nontraditional spirit in them. Nontraditional marketing methods are capable of creating word of mouth which requires no out-of-pocket expenditure compared to more expensive TV advertisements. They are also more cost efficient per dollar spent, especially in BMW’s psychographic segmentation. Moreover, nontraditional media like movie placement give greater exposure and visibility even reaching the two audiences that are hard-to-reach through network TV or print: foreign viewers and young people. The positive feelings about the movie and movie stars can also be transferred to the brand, ultimately building the overall brand equity. These methods are more credible, unique and impactful as they are generated by the public compared to the traditional media generated by the advertiser. Moreover,...

...Christopher Boshers Professor Jim Willis Mass Media and Cultures 26 February 2013 Story of a Lifetime The film that I chose “State of Play” starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman, Robin Wright Penn and Jeff Daniels was based on British television show with the same name. The story follows a journalist that is old friends with a Congressman who becomes entangled in the murder of a researcher that is currently working on the role of a big business in the security business that wants to privatize Homeland Security. At the beginning of the movie we see what appears to be a thief being chased by a very suspicious character. He then kills the man and shoots a pizza delivery man who survives the shooting. The next day the intern, Sonia Baker appears to commit suicide by stepping in front of a train. This is when Congressman Collins approaches Cal McAffrey, who happens to be the journalist and the main character of the movie. This is when Cal discovers that the Congressman and Sonia have had an affair which puts the Congressman in a really bad predicament. With this information Cal is able to be the first that has the necessary evidence from a credible source on the story. This source fit all three of the criteria for a news source. He was an authority on the matter, he was thought to be a credible source, and was available and willing to speak. The investigation leads to a PR executive who had served as the PR liaison for the corporation...

...As the director of a local television station I have two breaking news stories to share with our viewers. I have decided to report about the vote of the city council to close the city parks three days a week to save money. The second story we will report on will be the death of a celebrity. I decided to go with the council vote as my lead story because of the impact it has on the local population. Closing down the parks for three days will force the parents to find alternative places for their children to play. In today’s society children recreation is defined by Xbox, Wii and PlayStation. With rise of obesity among our children limiting the availability of the parks for the sake of money is poor politics. The city council should reconvene to find new approaches to saving money besides closing city parks. One submission is that we as a local television station can help promote a fund-raiser for the sole purpose of raising fund to keep the parks open for one or three of the days. Reporting on the death of a celebrity does not have the local concern of effect of the city parks story. Another reason I have chosen to make this my secondary story is that this story will possibly be reported on a larger media outlet. As a local television media we believe committed to our hometown citizens should be focus. Also putting the celebrity’s death second still keep our local informed of national news. By us reporting about the death of the actor will still maintain...

...Managing people Introduction The aim of this report is to analyze and comment on the selection practices based on the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. According to Scott (2005), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was filmed in 2005 based on children’s book by Roald Dahl. The movie reveals a story about poor young boy – Charlie, who lives in town, where located chocolate factory owned by famous confectioner - Willy Wonka. Soon, Willy Wonka decides to allow 5 children to visit his factory and distributes five Golden tickets hidden in the five chocolate’s bars to the unknown locations. The one who will find golden ticket will be allowed to visit chocolate factory. Moreover last child left will win the main prize. Thus, five children found, who found Golden tickets are: Augusutus Gloop – rude and glutton guy, who lives only for food; Veruca Salt – spoilt child, who demands whatever she wants from her parents by screaming at them; Violet Beauregarde – impudent girl, whom mind completely taken by gum chewing; Mike Teavee – bot, who addicted to television; and Charlie Bucket – very polite and shy boy, who is protagonist in this movie. ...Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room Summary After a two and half hour checking dictionary and writing notes, I finally understood this movie. Indeed, it’s a great movie with a tragic and thought-provoking ending. As the movie, it is complicated to say that whose responsibility is the most. Inside Enron The U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations listed high risk accounting, inappropriate conflicts of interest, extensive undisclosed off-the-books activity, and excessive compensation at top of the report findings (Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, 2002). These unscrupulous operations are made by increasingly arrogant Enron. Therefore, it cannot be denied that Enron is demise by its own corporate culture. Meanwhile, its culture is affected by individuals’ actions which are closely linked with Kenneth Lay, former chairman and CEO of Enron, and Jeffrey Skilling, former CEO and COO. Ken Lay comes from a quite poor family. When he was a child he had to work some jobs such as newspaper delivery boy and lawn mower. I think it’s the major reason that he becomes an egomania who puts earnings before scruples. Actually, his condition makes me reminding President Lincoln whose also came from a poor family with enormous ambitions. Fortunately, Lincoln chose to do right things using his intelligence and abilities. However, Jeff Skilling had different situation. Back to his admission interview in Harvard Business School, the professor asked him...

...explaining it to your readers? As the editor there is a responsibility to both journalism and to the public to report accurate news stories. Through this public apology, I the editor assure you the readers that the fabrication of the material of reporter John Doe was not a reflection of the reputation of this newspaper to print misleading false stories and the direct result of the deception caused ABC Newspaper to terminate employment however the reporter wanted to comment on his role in reporting the news. I would like to apologize for misleading the readers of this fine newspaper and to give the main reason for my deception. News is as time sensitive medium. It requires up- to- date reporting. If a person reports a story several days after the event happens; no one will be interested nor be impacted by the story. The purpose of reporting the news is to bring awareness to the people who are impacted by it. The desperation in bringing the story first caused a loss in judgment and ethics. With the increased delivery methods, including newspapers, television, radio, online newspaper web pages, and blogging, It became apparent that to capture the audience I would have to use sensationalistic tactics to do so. These tactics in journalism are often about crimes, natural disasters, scandals involving prominent people, and celebrity gossip. The other included news reports of exposed corruption, particularly in business and government. It was important to deliver the story before any...

...Report “Classic”. When I saw this movie first time I thought: -Why “Classic”? First of all my aim was to find the correct definition of this title. Classic is something which is authentically what we can consider as an example. Example of classic we can find in the past because it is something which is happened early. Example is a basic. In this movie there are two lines: past and present. Main characters try to find answers to questions – Why they try to find each other? Why they want to see each other every minute? What was happened? How their generations can be connected? From the first episodes we see present days. But some minutes later all story carry to past. I think that we can guess about future development of events because mother and daughter look the same. This story about woman life, her feelings and anxiety. Man’s line is not so emotional but full of difficulties not even in love but in life. The necklace in this story considered like a sigh. It appeared in the past line when lover must leave each other. Through all this story they keep this necklace and struggle for it as a reminder of their relationship. They outlived all difficulties on their way. At the end this necklace was given present generation as a memory of immortal love. In this story we can see not only past and present generation but also differences between upbringings. Early for any kind of offence there was strict punishment. We can see that past generation is not so free in their actions...

...Week Nine Final Assignment Jane Doe HUM/176 February 5, 2009 John Doe Part One As the director of a local television station it would be my duty to report the news that would have the greatest impact on my community and its residents. The death of a celebrity will be news worthy, entertaining, and bring in ratings but would not affect my community like the closing of a city park three days a week would. The primary role of the media is to accurately report on the issues that directly impact its viewers and communities. The death of a celebrity does not have much staying power beyond its entertainment value and furthermore has no direct effect on the community or its residents. There would be a larger impact on the local community by covering the story of the local park closing. Residents and families would be impacted the most by a city park closing and having their opinions and views would be vital to the coverage of the story. City council members would also be interviewed about the budgetary issues and the reasoning for this decision to further inform viewers. The social responsibility of news media is to present unbiased coverage of issues that affect the public; however, these days it seems that there is really no social responsibility of the news media as most stations are for profit businesses owned by larger media corporations. The responsibility it seems these days is to the company’s shareholders. There are so many ways that consumers get their...

...The movie “Crash” and its intercultural sub-context Intercultural communication occurs when people or groups from different cultures communicate. The actual process of listening and responding to people with various cultural backgrounds can be difficult. The movie Crash demonstrates a number of diversity problems and intercultural barriers. It tells a story of multiple different individuals and families and how they are all intertwined, even if they want to think they are not. Most obviously, the characters come from different races, but race set aside they are each a part of different subcultures of the Los Angeles area. Crash used excellent interpretations that showed how pre-judging and stereotyping have the power to influence other people and their own behavioral patterns. Three scenes in particular stood out to me as examples in which intercultural barriers were present. The Hispanic man that was a locksmith with his child, the Caucasian police officer (played by Matt Dillon) and his judgment of an African American female (played by Thandie Newton), and finally the scene of a notable instance occurs between a Caucasian gun storeowner and a Persian man and his daughter. Other people that were portrayed in the movie had a different opinion, but the Mexican locksmith was a man who was very family-oriented, docile, and good-hearted. Throughout the movie though, he was viewed as a bum, gang-member, and menace to society. The people in the movie formed their pre-determined...
