Abstract

Culture is an integral part of an individual as well as society as a whole, most people identify their sense of belongingness to culture as it consists of one’s language, means of communication, health beliefs, customs, rituals and above all religious beliefs and practices. It is through learning, time, accumulation and handling down of these beliefs and practices from generations that enables us a sense of belongingness to a specific culture. Culture is so diverse especially in the United States of America where people emigrate from different parts of the world and live within a society. Understanding culture is an important exclusive essence and crucial in nursing so that a professional can give cultural competent client oriented care. It is through proper understanding of one’s own culture and that of our clients’ culture that a nurse can transcend culture barriers and approach every client with their unique needs. To begin with their prevention method from illness, the first and foremost thing they do when a new member is born in a family is Talisman, a kind of amulet packed with their herbal remedies to protect from illness, precisely form evil eyes. It is worn with a string around the waist or carried with them in pockets or purses. They believe in Silver or copper bracelet from St. Thomas, which is said to protect them too. They believed that this bracelet would tarnish when the very person wearing is susceptible to vulnerable disease or the other way, skin will turn black as a signal for precaution.
