...Reflections on the Impact of Culture in the Classroom Giselle Mora-Bourgeois Gunston Middle School Arlington County (VA) Public Schools Submitted June 2000 Introduction A year of teaching 8th graders at Gunston Middle School provided me with many lessons on the impact of cultural differences and communication styles on the teaching-learning process. I discovered that my communication style was so different from that of my students that it led to many unpleasant and conflictive moments in the classroom. Additionally, I became more aware of my personal identity and more appreciative of the diverse cultural backgrounds of my students. This paper summarizes some observations and reflections on how cultural differences bedeviled my interactions with my students in Arlington County, Virginia. In general, culture refers to the ways in which different groups of people organize their daily lives within national or ethnic groups, urban neighborhoods, companies and professions, and other settings. Culture includes what people actually do and what they believe. Culture influences greatly how we see the world, how we try to understand it and how we communicate with each other. Therefore, culture determines, to a great extent, learning and teaching styles. Addressing cultural differences in the teaching-learning process is both important and controversial. It is important because we are confronted with an increasingly diverse population of students and the wide achievement gap between...

...such a problem. The traditional teaching technique or direct instruction style suits most students, but there are other different auditory or visual learners who need different teaching style. So teachers have to vary their techniques used inside their classes in order to achieve better understanding among their students. One of recommended solutions is using audio visual aids as a helping technique in classrooms. Many teachers adopt this style and they find it a fruitful technique that it not only develops language skills, but also contributes in giving students background for many cultures as well (Stoller, 1995). Despite the fact that using audio visuals is remarkably a useful technique, we can notice that it is not a common technique in the Palestinian schools because of many reasons. The problem of the study Using audio visual aids in teaching languages is a notably effective teaching style since it can make a class more lively and interesting; so students’ ability to understand is enhanced by such technique. Consequently, most teachers in the world adopt this technique, but unfortunately, it is not the same in Gaza schools as the majority of them do not use this technique, and they depend mainly and sometimes only on the ordinary teaching style. The need of the study While checking books, articles and other sources, it could be noticed that non of them has paid any attention to the problem of lack of using audio visual aids in teaching in Gaza schools. Therefore, this...

...Learning Styles Every individual has his/her own preferred learning style, whether it be auditory (learning by listening), visual (learning by viewing pictures or graphs), reading or writing (reading to gather information or writing your own notations), or kinesthetic (learning by touching or doing). The VARK questionnaire examines a person’s preferred method of learning with the use of questions and answers that cover these areas based on an individual’s score, which can deduce a preferred learning method (Fleming, 2013). By determining a person’s preferred method of learning, an educator has the ability to plan a teaching method that can emphasize learner’s preferences in learning thereby creating a teaching environment that will be more accommodating to the learner. By adapting to learners preferred method of learning, which in this case is auditory, the learner’s ability to comprehend is enhanced. Auditory learner’s best learn by hearing and by listening. Once confirming this as a learning preference, one may come to look back over past educational experiences and come to realize that past actions confirm these findings as based on the VARK Questionnaire(Fleming,2013) Preferred Learning Strategies For an auditory learner, when information is spoken it helps that information be stored the way it was said. It is easier to hear and comprehend verbal instructions rather than written ones. Often an auditory learner will read out loud because information is better remembered...

.... Analysis of VARK Questionnaire: How It Effects Learning and Teaching Sibel Healy Grand Canyon University: NRS 429V-O500 March 26, 2016 Analysis of VARK Questionnaire: How It Effects Learning and Teaching Learning style is a term used to describe how one interprets, organizes, and comprehends information. People have different learning style which is why each of us study and learn differently, the VARK learning style model helps us as individuals understand our learning preferences so that we can retrieve and convey information to the best of our ability. This model includes a questionnaire that helps those realize their learning preference. The model consist of four major learning categories visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic The learning preferences results provide an explanation on how someone “take[s]-in and give[s]-out information” ( Fleming, 2016). In this paper I discuss my learning styles and strategies that were recommend through the questionnaire, as well discuss how individual learning styles, preferences, and strategies can influence how someone may teach and learn. Summary of Learning Style Through the VARK questionnaire I was given the results that my learning preferences were split equally between read/write and kinesthetic. The read/write learning preference is for learners who take in information that is displayed in words. The input and output for this learning style is through printed material especially manuals, reports, essays...

...GUIDANCE COUNSELORS AND STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF THE PROBLEMS OF EFFECTIVE SKILL ACQUISITION IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHAPTER THREE 3.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research methodology is a system of explicit rules and procedures upon which research is based and against which claims for knowledge are evaluated (Nachmias & Nachmias, 1996:13). In this chapter, the methods for the study on guidance counselors and students perception of the problems of effective skill acquisition in senior secondary schools are discussed. This chapter spelled out how the study was conducted. 3.1 Research Design A research design is a plan of study (Oppenheim, 1996:6; Macmillan & Schumacher, 1993:157). Huysamen (1987:1) views a research design as “a preconceived plan according to which data are to be collected and analyzed to investigate research hypotheses”. In defining research design Nwana, (1981:19) stated that, research design is a term used to describe a number of decision which need to be taken regarding the collection of data before other data are been collected. The research adopted a case study design. The design of this study is a descriptive one. It is to explore guidance counselors and students perception of the problems to effective skill acquisition in senior secondary schools in Awka South LGA of Anambra state. The survey design is an attempt to collect data from members of a particular population in order to determine the correct status of the population with regards to one or more...

...Submitted to: DR. APOLONIO A. DUQUE THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction There is a substantial literature on the relationship between teacher characteristics and student learning. Most prior research on this topic has focused on teachers’ educational background, years of teaching experience and salaries. The results of this work are mixed. While it is clear that certain teachers are more effective than others at increasing student performance, there is considerably less consensus on whether specific, observable teacher characteristics such as education or experience produce higher performance. While most research has focused on general skills, school districts and states often rely on in-service staff development as a way to improve student learning. This on-the-job training seeks to instruct teachers in content as well as pedagogy. Professional development is an extremely widespread practice in U.S. Public Schools. 72 percent of teachers report having engaged in training related to the subject area of their main teaching assignment during the previous 12 months (Parsad et al. 2000). A similar fraction reports having received training on how to implement new teaching methods. Despite the widespread nature of these activities, the intensity of training is typically fairly low, with more...

The paper evaluates the impact of a change theory on teaching and learning and it assesses the implications of new knowledge on practices and performances of students in Religious Education. The focus of change is on the utilisation of planning strategies to promote interest in learning and the adaptation of critical thinking tools for the purpose of engaging the students in learning. A critical evaluation of the impact of effective questioning and dialogue forms part of the recommendations made. The new knowledge in this report is grounded in research and validated consequent upon the use of mixed methods approach to research and it is proof of evidence based research. The data for this research has been put together using questionnaires and informal interviews of purposively selected students. Recommendations include...
