Current Event 1: Health Care
Summary
Jay Hancock wrote an article titled, “Workplace Programs put Employees Privacy at Risk”, which was published to CNN on October 2, 2015. In his article, he discussed how workers from Houston were unsure about joining the employee wellness program because they were on edge to find out if it was in fact a legitimate wellness program or if it was a marketing scheme. Hancock stated that in Houston, it was required of employees to participate with the company wellness program and they were expected to give all of their confidential medical history. Jay Hancock informed the audience that the company was used to lower medical costs and improved the health of workers overall.
With being told to reveal their personal medical history, Hancock said that the workers missed in the fine print that their confidential history could be posted in areas viewable to the public and no longer protected by the privacy law. Jay Hancock stated that Houston workers do have the freedom to opt out of the wellness program but with that, they are expected to pay an extra $300 a year for medical coverage. Hancock quoted Ray Hunt, president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, when he said, “We don’t mind giving our information to our health care providers, but we don’t want to give it to a vendor that has carte blanche to give that information to anybody they want to.”
Opinion
I personally agree with the frustration that the Houston workers have towards this wellness program. Being pressured to give up your confidential medical history is wrong and should only be discussed with your health care provider. In that case, discussing such things with a health care provider cannot be discussed by them because it is in fact illegal according to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). To be asked for personal information for an online

Retrieved on 13 Nov. 2011 http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/pages/what-is-ptsd.asp UNDERSTANDING PTSD Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur after you have been through a traumatic event. A traumatic event is something horrible and scary that you see or that happens to you. During this type of event, you think that your life or others' lives are in danger. You may feel afraid or feel that you have no control over what is happening. Anyone who has gone through a life-threatening event can develop PTSD. These events can include: * Combat or military exposure * Child sexual or physical abuse * Terrorist attacks * Sexual or physical assault * Serious accidents, such as a car wreck. * Natural disasters, such as a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or earthquake. After the event, you may feel scared, confused, or angry. If these feelings don't go away or they get worse, you may have PTSD. These symptoms may disrupt your life, making it hard to continue with your daily activities. How does PTSD develop? All people with PTSD have lived through a traumatic event that caused them to fear for their lives, see horrible things, and feel helpless. Evolution of Hcis in the Last Two Decades

...Evolution of Health Care Information Systems There has been a very fast growth in the U.S. health care system since the early 1980s with regard to the information technology related to health care. This can be viewed as an attempt towards the standardization of the fragmented health care system. Information technology like in every other field of life has become a necessity even in the health care system and is covered by the federal regulations. The implementation of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) by 2014 has become mandated as ordered by President George.W.Bush in 2004 which was seconded by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). These organizations asked the health care providers to comply with the new legislation and those community-based physician practices who were earlier reluctant to accept and implement it have now realized that the health care in sequence systems in the form of CPOE (computerized physician order entry), EMR (electronic medical records), the tele-medicine, complex disease management, and automated billing systems are very beneficial to them The paper intends to showcase the comparison and contrast between a contemporary health care facility and a traditional health care facility which prevailed before twenty years. At least two major events and technological advantages influencing the practice of the current health care information system...

Evolution of Health Care Information Systems

...Evolution of Health Care Information Systems Since the early 1980s, the U.S. health care system has experienced a rapid growth in the sector of health care information technology. This growth can be viewed as an attempt to standardize our fragmented health care system. The health care information technology is no longer an option but a necessity to be compliant with the mandated federal regulations. President George W. Bush in 2004 asked health care providers to implement Electronic Health Records (EHR) by 2014. The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) also joined this initiative by asking health care providers to be compliant with the new legislation. Many community-based physician practices previously reluctant to embrace technology are realizing the benefits of the health care information systems, such as computerized physician order entry (CPOE), electronic medical records (EMR), tele-medicine, complex disease management, and automated billing systems. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast a contemporary health care facility with a health care facility of 20 years ago. Additionally, the paper will identify at least two major events and technological advantages that influenced the current health care information system (HCIS) practices. Definition of Health Care Information Systems Prior to discussing the evolution of HCIS in the last two decades, it would...

Assessment Tools Analysis

...Assessment Tools Analysis Cindy Hall NUR/440 August 15, 2011 Dee Martinez Assessment Tools Analysis Assessing physical measures of patients can often be a difficult task. However, there are several assessment tools available to health care professionals to guide them in providing the best patient care possible. Along with proper assessment tools, Watson’s theory of human caring plays an important role in the integration of the mind, body, and spirit dimensions of each patient. This paper will state three assessment tools that evaluate a patient’s physical measures, describe each tool and the population for which it may be useful, and state data about each tool. Such data may include cost, length, ease in using the tool, for what population it is best designed, and the validity of the information. A description of how each tool enhances the assessment phase of the nursing process and affects the quality of health care delivered by the nurse will be discussed. Each of these tools will be applied to a chosen vulnerable population researched from the Vulnerable Population and Self-awareness paper. The vulnerable population I researched consisted of the elder population. Mrs. James was my subject. She is a 65-year-old widow who lives alone. She has become socially isolated with little to no support system. She has two sons who live out of state and very rarely keeps in contact with them. She does not work and has limited savings. Currently she relies on social...
