Current Event Article INTRODUCTION The 2012 Presidential race and beyond dealt with some of the most controversial issues that has confronted a campaign in some time. One issue in particular that has been on the negotiation table since the beginning of the Presidential campaign is Immigration Reform. In this article, this writer will discuss the ongoing tug-of-war negotiation process of putting this bill into law. IMMIGRATION REFORM Immigration reform is a widely used term to describe proposals to increase legal immigration while decreasing illegal immigration. In others words, prevent illegal immigrates (Non United States citizens) from crossing the Mexican border into the United States without a passport or visa. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, made it illegal to hire or recruit illegal immigrants. Legislative History According to Wikipedia (nd), “The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 (S. 1348) – was a bill discussed in the 110th United States Congress that would have provided legal status and a path to citizenship for the approximately 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States. The bill was portrayed as a compromise between providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and increased border enforcement.” http://en.wikipedia.org. This bill was published on 09 May 2007 by one of the key negotiator’s of Obamacare; Senator (Democrat) Harry Reid. Need I say more! NEGOTIATIONS Negotiations over the immigration reform act is strictly a ‘power struggle’ between two parties (Democrats and Republicans) who’s agendas seem to be more on the personal side than for the common good of the people.

Current Event Article

...BUSM 20 April 2, 2012 Current Event/Article My current event is based on an article I read on the Los Angeles Times website, the article was titled “Consumers left in dark during fight between Tribune and DirecTV” by Joe Flint. The article talks about the fees dispute between Tribune Co. and DirecTV, this dispute led to the shutdown of channels KTLA and WGN, which went dark on Sunday, April 1st leaving customers without access. This dispute goes back to the battle over fees between the programmers and the distributors. Although channels have been threatened to be pulled before, in prior negotiations, most have been adverted to even fixed within days of going dark. DirecTV claims the dispute will be resolved soon and customers shouldn’t worry, however, Tribune Co. is claiming that DirecTV is refusing to make a fair deal and that there is no agreement at this time. At this point there are over 19 million DirecTV subscribers over the country that have lost channels in their area. I wonder if the negotiation is really worth the loss of a customer, or thousands. Being a DirecTV customer had this happened with the channels I watch on a regular basis I would be considering moving to another company. Not having access to the channels you already pay a fortune to maintain would not make me want to keep my loyalties with DirecTV. I don’t’ see why DirecTV would be willing to lose customer instead of coming to an agreement on the fees and saving their customers the frustration. DirecTV...

Current Event Article

...On April 24th of this year, the Los Angeles Time published an article highlighting the imprisonment of a former KPMG partner for his role in multiple illegal transactions that derived from the disclosure of insider information. The article notes that Scott London pled guilty to insider trading after “repeatedly” tipping off a friend (Shaw) to corporate secrets of major KPMG clients (amongst these: Herbalife Ltd. and Sketchers USA Inc.) in exchange for monetary and gift compensation. As a result of his actions, London was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison and to pay a fine of $100,000. The greater loss for the former partner; however, is noted to be his high-paying position and extraordinary damage to his reputation. In review of this article, one notes that insider trading is a strong example of information asymmetry in the form of adverse selection. As per its definition, adverse selection is “a type of information asymmetry whereby one or more parties to a business transaction… have an information advantage over other parties.” (Scott, 2014). In this case, Shaw gained an unfair advantage over ordinary investors by receiving and exploiting London’s insider information that provided for numerous profitable trades. In Chapter 4, the Efficient Securities Market Theory is introduced which further explores the issue of information asymmetry. In brief summary, the chapter states that, “Efficient securities market theory alerts us to the primary reason for the existence...

Way For Vampires: Teaching First-Year Composition In Challenging Times By Sandie Friedman

...In the article "This Way for Vampires: Teaching First-Year Composition in 'Challenging Times.'" by Sandie Friedman, she argues whether popular culture and current events should be taught in first-year writing classes. Friedman receives the support from several other professors that agree with the same claim. Based on the article, Friedman believes that vampires offer just as much learning material as an informational textbook. With that being said, I agree with Friedman; teaching popular culture should be taught in first-year writing classes.   There should be topics more than writing and grammar taught in first-year writing classes. Many students struggle with paying attention to things that do not interest them. Friedman states in her article...

It traces the foundation of these theories to the current events that are studied today. The author notes that postmodern era arguments were based on relations between western modernity and tourism. In the recent past, sociology theories have changed due to dynamism in human behavior and a broader definition of authenticity. Due to the different shifts occurring in the society today the journal concentrates on current sociology theories. The theory discussed in this article are reviewed in through three perspectives of the modern world that are Mobility, Performativity approach, and the actor network theory (p. 2178). The journal outlines the chronology of various changes that have been witnessed in the tourism sector over the years. The journal elucidates the significant historical events affecting contemporary tourism. Three theories are used to explain these changes and their impacts on tourism, these include performativity, mobilities, and the ANT approaches (p. 2195). Narrowed Topic Stricter Gun Control Laws in the United States I chose this topic because it is something that interests me a lot. I believe that it is absolutely absurd how many mass shooting occur in the United States each year. We are supposed to be the best country on Earth, yet so many innocent people are killed each year. When I go out to public places, I am always extra careful of my surroundings and what is going on around me because you never know what can happen at any place and anytime. You cannot trust anyone and you never know who can turn on you in just minutes. My dad and my other my family members work in law enforcement and it sickens me every time I hear about a scary job that they were apart of or even when you hear on the news that another police officer was shot and killed by a criminal. We are the United States, we have a solution to pretty much every problem out there, I strongly believe that something can and must be done to stop all of this unnecessary gun violence in our country. 2. Knowing Your Audience

...Knowing Your Audience – San Jose Mine By Ash H Business Communication and Creative Writing After reviewing the short article that described the incident which occurred at San Jose mine (a small copper operation in the northern Chile that is owned by Minera San Esteban Primera), I felt that it was properly direct and to the point and did not steer away from all the important information that any audience would find necessary in order to be involved of the situation. However, I did notice how “cold” and unwelcoming the information felt reading it on paper. Almost as if a human being did not write this article but instead a generic robot that did not imply any sort of needed emotion in regards to the unsettling and questionable incident that occurred. When understanding the different considerations to remember given the different roles and people in the audience, I have a few issues with the way this article was written. If I were a family member of one of the trapped victims at the San Jose mine, I would not find any comfort in the sentence stating “Local organizations, such as the federation of Chilean mining workers (FMC) and the confederation of copper workers (CTC) have questioned Minera San Esteban's safety record, highlighting several fatal accidents that have previously been reported at the small company.” (Weik, 2010) In fact, I would feel more alarmed and worried than I was initially thought to be due to the possibility that this company not only allowed their...

Fast Food Industry

...http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Articles/2013/08/06/Are-the-Fast-Food-Workers-Right-About-Minimum-Wage Summary of the article: The article is focused in a current controversial issue that involves the fast-food industry and how right are their workers about increasing their minimum wage to $15. The article mentions how a basic living standard is what fast- food workers make to support themselves. The labor Bureau reported that 28 percent of core front-line fast-food workers regularly work 40 or more hours per week, compared to 75 percent of the country’s workforce as a whole. More than two-thirds of workers across the country are over the age of 20, and 68 percent are the main wage earners in their families, and more than a quarter of Americans working in fast-food restaurants are parents, raising at least one child. People who work in fast-food jobs are paid so little that having to rely on public assistance is the rule, rather than the exception, even for those working 40 hours or more a week. Fast food is a $200 billion-a-year industry. The wage for core front-line workers at fast-food restaurants nationally is $8.69 an hour. Only 13 percent of the jobs provide health benefits. The fast-food industry’s low wages and meager benefits, often accompanied by part-time. The article also explains that on the other hand the food industry could react differently to this demand reducing the headcounts. Eventually, putting pressure on those employers will emerge that have trained...
