Current Event Paper: Chapter Four
The most important parts of an organization are the goods and services that the organization offers. Therefore, it is crucial to efficiently and effectively manage the company’s product and service design. Executives can easily come up with ideas for new products and services because they have a plethora of information available to them from customers, suppliers, distributors, and employees. Not only is idea generation important, but the reasons for design or re-design must also be considered. Executives need to consider the economy, social and demographic information, politics, competition, cost, availability, and technological accessibility when they are designing new products and services. After an idea has been thoroughly researched executives are required to complete specific tasks depending on whether their design is a product or service. After all product or service design phases are complete executives can begin to sell their designs to the public.
One article titled “Design that Matters: Groundbreaking Products Designed for Poor People” discusses an interesting design strategy. This article explains how some companies have started to design products and services specifically intended for impoverished people. These companies believe that designing products and services for people that do not have access to simple items will create a business that is economically and environmentally sustainable, thus creating company growth, huge profits, and enormous improvements to humankind. Currently, new product and service design in India and Africa “have resulted into groundbreaking innovations that are already making a huge difference to the largest number of people in the world.” (Kulkarni) The companies consider technological information while designing the products and services. Many of the products do not need electricity to function because the countries that the companies are selling to are less technologically advanced. The companies also consider social factors. Because customers are not accustomed to technology, the companies create products that need less repairs, have multiple uses, use native resources, and are easy to use. Additionally, companies consider the countries’ economies before designing the products. Because the targeted countries do not have much money companies design cheaper products that can be sold at lower costs.
This article relates to the Product and Service Design chapter in MIS 373. The companies designing for impoverished countries understand that product and service design are of utmost importance. Therefore, executives started generating ideas to make their companies more profitable. Eventually, they came up with the idea of creating unique products and services for less fortunate countries. Additionally, executives in the companies understand that the reasons for design are extremely important. Workers in the companies are thoroughly researching the overall economy, social behaviors, and technological accessibility of the countries they are working for. Thus, the companies are creating cheap and simple products that do not require electricity. After considering all the important reasons for the design the companies can begin the multiple design phases to complete and sell the products. As a result, these companies are becoming extremely successful.
