...Current Event Paper: Chapter Four The most important parts of an organization are the goods and services that the organization offers. Therefore, it is crucial to efficiently and effectively manage the company’s product and service design. Executives can easily come up with ideas for new products and services because they have a plethora of information available to them from customers, suppliers, distributors, and employees. Not only is idea generation important, but the reasons for design or re-design must also be considered. Executives need to consider the economy, social and demographic information, politics, competition, cost, availability, and technological accessibility when they are designing new products and services. After an idea has been thoroughly researched executives are required to complete specific tasks depending on whether their design is a product or service. After all product or service design phases are complete executives can begin to sell their designs to the public. One article titled “Design that Matters: Groundbreaking Products Designed for Poor People” discusses an interesting design strategy. This article explains how some companies have started to design products and services specifically intended for impoverished people. These companies believe that designing products and services for people that do not have access to simple items will create a business that is economically and environmentally sustainable, thus creating company growth, huge...

In this particular situation, the man knew a language to communicate with, but just not the right one. Fluent in Standard German, Swiss German, and French, a man suffered from a bad stroke that left him with the inability to speak in Standard German anymore. As this was the language spoken in his household, he was aware that there would be some tough times ahead. The stroke made him lose consciousness for a few days. Then, upon waking up, he immediately realized he was the only French-speaking individual in the room. Some time went by and the man’s speech slowly regained an understandable level, with the help from his children, who only knew what they knew from school. The target audience for this article is mostly for adults, who are interested in hearing though-provoking stories of what could happen to them in their life. ...The first time that I began writing the English academic essay is three years ago. In order to apply for universities in America, I should take the SAT test. In the test, the hardest part for me is writing. At that time, I realized that writing is never easy for an international student. It is a big challenge to write an academic paper by using the second language. The argument, thesis, word choices and grammar always bother me. However, I know that writing is the most important skill for a college student, so I never stop practicing and improving it. I took a writing class 20C and 39A in my first year. Both of them helped me a lot to improve writing skills. Last quarter, I took 39B, which was my first time to know rhetorical writing. When I take writing 39C this quarter, I learn deeply about the rhetorical and research...

...In the article "This Way for Vampires: Teaching First-Year Composition in 'Challenging Times.'" by Sandie Friedman, she argues whether popular culture and current events should be taught in first-year writing classes. Friedman receives the support from several other professors that agree with the same claim. Based on the article, Friedman believes that vampires offer just as much learning material as an informational textbook. With that being said, I agree with Friedman; teaching popular culture should be taught in first-year writing classes. There should be topics more than writing and grammar taught in first-year writing classes. Many students struggle with paying attention to things that do not interest them. Friedman states in her article...

...has been blown by a new paper just published in Nature. Just when I least expected it, after a busy day when I took a few minutes to respond to a query from a journalist about a new paper just published in Nature [link to abstract]: This has important implications for IPCC’s upcoming AR5 report, where they will attempt to give attribution to the warming, which now looks more and more like a natural cycle. See updates below. – Anthony ================================================================ Guest essay by Bob Tisdale The recently published climate model-based paper Recent global-warming hiatus tied to equatorial Pacific surface cooling [Paywalled] by Yu Kosaka and Shang-Ping Xie has gained a lot of attention around the blogosphere. Like Meehl et al (2012) and Meehl et al (2013), Kosaka and Xie blame the warming stoppage on the recent domination of La Niña events. The last two sentences of Kosaka and Xie (2013) read: Our results show that the current hiatus is part of natural climate variability, tied specifically to a La-Niña-like decadal cooling. Although similar decadal hiatus events may occur in the future, the multi-decadal warming trend is very likely to continue with greenhouse gas increase. Anyone with a little common sense who’s reading the abstract and the hype around the blogosphere and the Meehl et al papers will logically now be asking: if La Niña events can stop global warming, then how much do El Niño events contribute? 50%? The climate...
