The curriculum in the new South African (post 1994) has changed greatly. They were several reasons for curriculum changes in South Africa after 1994, firstly it was globalisation and the post 1994 government wanted to get rid of apartheid legacy on our educational system. This essay will analyse curriculum development with the focus on three influential educationists namely, Tyler, Stenhouse and Freire.
Many teachers interpret curriculum differently, but the views they hold on curriculum development can in fact be traced to the theoretical grounding set by Tyler (whose influence in South African Education is the greatest), Stenhouse and Freire. This educationist has some similarities views about curriculum development and also some major different thinking about curriculum development.
Tyler proposed a technical or objective approach to curriculum development that view curriculum as a product. He has well defined goals and designed curriculum to reach this goals. Tyler’s approach is packed into four steps; set objectives, decide on the content to be taught, select how teaching will be organised and determine how the assessment and evaluation will be done. According to Tyler, if you follow the recipe you will achieve the set objectives. Tyler’s approach is true in our curriculum; CAPS set out clear content what should teacher teach. CAPS outline the plan, what to teach from each grade and year plan schedule for each grade.
One of tyler’s critic, Stenhouse. Stenhouse view curriculum development as a process. Stenhouse has much more practical approach to curriculum and does not agree with tyler’s technical approach. Stenhouse view education as open ended and experimental, thus lead to every classroom as laboratory. This link to freire idea of leaning being a dialogue between educator and learners.
