Mankind will never understand all of the enigmatic secrets of Ancient Egypt. But, even today, archaeologists are slowly gathering bits and bits of pieces to the puzzle. In the articles, “New discoveries in Ancient Egypt,” by reporter Bryan Brown and ,”Curse of the Pharaohs,” by archaeologist Zahi Hawass, both convey how each piece to the puzzle, is crucial to the evocation to the lives of the people who lived in Ancient Egypt. But, they show the historical importance in different ways. The two authors describe the historical importance of recent discoveries in similar ways. First off, the authors are considered different sources. In the article, “New discoveries in Ancient Egypt,” page 234, it said, “Egyptian civilization “took a gigantic leap under the ruler Aha” says David O’Connor who is leading the excavations at Abydos.” In other words, Bryan Brown’s article is a secondary source. He is taking information from people who were actually at the site and informing readers about it in his article. On the other hand, “Curse of the Pharaohs,” is a primary source. It clearly states in the first paragraph that Hawass and his team were the ones to make this discovery. It was recorded by a person who witnessed it, thus, this is a primary source. A second difference is the evidence for the importance of the discoveries stated in the articles is very different. In the article, “New discoveries in Ancient Egypt,” Brown suggests that the graveyard of Abydos is important because the bodies found there confirm the suspicion that people were sacrificed for the Pharaoh. Also, in the article, “Curse of the Pharaohs,” on page 243, it states, “The discovery of four statues, in situ (a fancy way of saying “in their original place”), is very unusual.” To put it in another way, Hawass creates the image that these statues are important because they were in their original place, which is very rare.
