Genetics Case Study

...Rita Trosack is a 43-year old white female, married for six years to husband, Peter, a 46-year old white male. They both work in the financial district of Chicago and live downtown. They have been trying to conceive for two years. They both work an average of sixty hours a week. Rita and Peter were both raised as Catholics; however, they choose not to practice at this time. Rita missed her menstrual period, began having typical signs and symptoms of pregnancy (nausea, dry heaving, tender breasts, and fatigue). The fatigue was so severe she decreased her hours at the bank. An early pregnancy test performed by Rita tested positive. She then calculated her due date as January 27, 2009, since her last menstrual period (LMP) began on April 20, 2008. Rita met with Dr. Zimmerly an obstetrician in a high-risk obstetric clinic. On this first visit he confirmed the estimated date of delivery (EDD) as late January 2009. Due to Rita’s age, the chorionic villus sampling (CVS) was recommended to screen for fetal genetic defects. Rita had the test in early July, which would place her around eleven weeks into her pregnancy; this is the appropriate time in which to perform the CVS. Amniocentesis could have been performed, but this is usually done around the seventeenth week of pregnancy. Rita also began taking prenatal vitamins, and stopped drinking her daily glass of wine with dinner. Rita and Peter are both non-smokers, they are happy this is not an issue for the unborn child...

Fortune 500 Food and Drug Industry

...CVS Health Summary of Industry Characteristics December 31, 2014 Summary The Food and Drug Store industry consists of stores that primarily focus on the sale of food, drugs (nonprescription and prescription), or a combination of both. Typically smaller than General Merchandisers, such as Wal-Mart, the companies in the Food and Drug Store industry provide grocery products such as cold and hot foods, pharmaceuticals, general pet care, and typical household products meant for everyday living. Stores that fall within the industry may specialize in one aspect over the other, such as CVS Health in pharmacy and health care. Even though the major products of the industry are food and drugs, there are several other minor products like health clinics and fuel centers that play an important role in the industry. Industry Sales The industry revenues can range from $139,367 Million to $14,194 Million and profits range from $4,644 Million to $113 Million, just within the companies within the Fortune 500. Their revenue is mostly derived from their sales of their inventory, no matter which side of the industry they sell from. Since most companies will use FIFO inventory methods, this helps decrease their product waste due to expiration dates and will increase their total sales and revenue. Their highest costs tend to be for plant, property, and equipment. Kroger, for example, owns a majority of the buildings where their retail stores are located and they are slowly disposing of their...

Human Resource Management

...Introduction : A Chief Operating Officer (or Chief Operations Officer; COO) or Director of Operations (or Operations Director) can be one of the highest-ranking executives in an organization and comprises part of the "C-Suite". The COO is responsible for the daily operation of the company,[1] and routinely reports to the highest ranking executive, usually the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).[2] The COO may also carry the title of President which makes him or her the clear number-two in command at the firm, especially if the highest ranking executive is the Chairman and CEO. Contents * 1 Responsibilities and similar titles * 1.1 Corporate president * 1.2 Current situation * 2 Roles and functions * 2.1 COO as successor * 3 Relationship with CEO * 4 Relationship with board of directors * 5 Failure in the COO role * 6 Experts and research * 7 List of notable COOs * 7.1 Current * 8 References * 9 Further reading | Responsibilities and similar titles Unlike other C-suite positions, which tend to be defined according to commonly designated responsibilities across most companies, the COO job tends to be defined in relation to the specific CEO with whom he/she works, given the close working relationship of these two individuals.[3] In many ways, the selection of a COO is similar to the selection of a Vice President of the United States: the role (including the power and responsibilities therein) can vary dramatically, depending on the style and...
