CHAPTER – 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND
The Center for women‘s right and development (CWRD) is a social development organization established to promote the rights of women as their development efforts. It was registered in 1993 with the Nepal government as a non-governmental, non-political, non-denominational and non-profit organization. CWRD is rooted in the brief that services must be comprehensive integrated and collectively addresses the social, economic, political, cultural, civil and educational needs of women if they are to be effective. Although the women of Nepal contribute 2/3 of total working hours in Nepal they only receive 1/10 of total wages and own 1/100 of the wealth. Women are oppressed economically and politically. They are unrepresented by government and, although they are guaranteed equal rights under the constitution, these rights are not protected under the law and thus are largely ignored. Women are also often the victim, of violence exploitation and poverty. They are disenfranchised from their family and their culture as well as society as whole. CWRD was created to combat the realities facing the women of Nepal today. Its focus is on mobilizing the community around the issues conforming women in an effort to improve their male counterparts. Since its creation CWRD’s main objectives has been to raise the consciousness of both men and women, support and encourage the develop efforts of women and put an end to the social, cultural, injustice, discrimination and violence experienced by women.
For year period to CWRD’s registration as NGO its founders were actively involved in organizing women. They devoted years counting the struggle to recognize the women, the difficulties they face, their contribution to society, and must importantly their rights. To further this cause of founders of CWRD became actively involved in the women’s defense pressure groups(WDPG), an informal network of 90 Nepalese NGO’s objective was to apply pressure on the government to recognize and acknowledge the right of women here in Nepal, in corporate once issues in to Nepal political and development agenda , there by giving it the attention it so justly deservers .WEDPG took a leading role in the fight for political reform for woman in Nepal facilitating political effort and mobilizing woman to effect change . The founders gained a wealth of experience from their involvement with WDPG. This experience ultimately encouraged and lead to the creation of the center for woman‘s right and development. In 1993, CWRD was found to establish a board focused on issue affecting women, their empowerment, and their human rights. The struggle to empower women has been difficult one for CWED, especially given the status of women today. While CWRD has made great studies helping many women find their voice and thereby improving the quality of their lives, CWRD’s goals have not yet been fully realized. CWRD is responsible for implementation an institution of many programs and service that are improving the live of women through Nepal everyday and while CWRD has come closer to reaching their goals there is still much work to be done.

The various skills that are taught include: fabric painting, cooking, sewing-cutting .entrepreneurship development, and small business. Recently, CWRD has tried to expend its skills development programme to include trades that have been traditionally and exclusively done by men. By adding a training in house wiring CWRD has attempted to alleviate gender segration found in the labor market. CWRD hopes to expend its training further in the future to include more trade s traditional held by men. Other skills include sewing- cutting, fabric painting, and cooking education. Some of the above skills training programmes also provide primary health and environment protection.

2.2.2 LITERACY MOVEMENT PROGRAMME
In this topic CWRD were following activities were taken into consideration and conducted work. They are: The literacy classes are a crucial component of this programme and necessary for the improvement of women. The literacy rate today for women in Nepal is much lower than it is for men. If women wish to improve their lives it is necessary that they learn how to read and write. The functional literacy classes provided by this programme have shown to be highly effective increasing the literacy rate of women in Nepal. Currently, with the help of UNICEF Nepal and PACT Nepal, CWRD is playing a leading role in the literacy movement. Today, CWRD conducts over 300 literacy classes, many of which are held in the remote areas of Nepal where the literacy rate for women is at its lowest. Over the year CWRD has assisted more then 8500 women in becoming literate. One of CWRD’s most effective literacy classes about No formal Education and Sensitization programme that was implemented in Behari, Maulapur, Rajghatta, and Dumarwana Village of the Bara district. After the programmes completion 3020 of the women who participated in the programme were literate. The programme is noteworthy because it integrated literacy, health education, environmental protection, and group savings.
During 1998 CWRD expanded its functional literacy classes even further to include there more villages in the Bardiya district, Bisanpurawa, Hanumanganj Kolvi, and Dumarwana. As a result of this expansion nine hundred more women became literate. Today 110 literacy classes are conducted and 3340 women are literate in this district.
And in Kathmandu district with help of UNICEF Nepal 90 literacy classes are conducted. This programme conducted in nayabazar, pasupati, Koteswor and chhetrapati in Kathmandu district. As a rustle 1685 women are literate in that programme. Table No: 3

2.2.3 HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVITIES In Nepal many women are unaware of their legal rights and for those that are those rights are often ignored. Although women were given additional property rights in 1975 under the sixth amendment to the civil code the laws of ownership and right to property rarely favor women .Women are also often the victims of violence ,rape , and exploitation with little non illegal resource. In May of 1995 CWRD broadened their services to address the legal concerns of women. The free Legal Service Project for Helpless Women (FLSPHW), a project funded by the Social Welfare Council of Nepal was implemented at CWRD’s central office in Bagbazar. The project provides legal advisement and advocacy. CWRD has attorney who provides free legal advice to women who are the victim of domestic violence or in need of representation to ensure that their right to property is enforced. The projects are also responsible for organizing various seminars, rallies, and workshops that promote the right s of women. The project regularly conducts human right s training which are designed to raise public awareness of a women’s legal rights.
CWRD provides many other services in addition to legal advisement. CWRD, with the help of its legal advocates, also conducts paralegal training, awareness campaigns, and various activities they promote the political organizing of women. For example, CWRD co- organized a one day public hearing on trafficked women. The event gave victims the opportunity to tell their stories. The event was a collaborative effort by CWRD, watch and the Asian Women Human Rights Council to heighten public’s awareness of the exploitation and abuse by women around the World. CWRD was also responsible for lunching Black Day, another demonstrations against the volition of human rights of women. Most recently CWRD, along with other women’s organization, sponsored and helped to organize The World March of Women. The march was an international effort to stop the spread of poverty and violence against women.
Today CWRD has helped over 4116 women, advising them of their legal rights, advocating.

2.2.4 AGRICULTURE Nepal is an agricultural economy with more then 90% of its people depending upon agriculture to subsist. In many parts of the country, food and energy security rely on the knowledge and productive abilities of women. If the country’s development efforts are to be effective they need to focused on the development of new agriculture technologies that will benefit the small farmers of Nepal. The following agriculture activities are being conducted by CWRD. ❖ Co-organized workshop on “role of peasant women in Nepal” in Rampur Chitwan.40 percent women from different districts took part in the programme. ❖ Two week kitchen gardening training programme for rural women. ❖ Yearly distribution of vegetable seeds to small farmers living the remote areas on Nepal (Supported by UNICEF Nepal). ❖ Income generation through vegetable gardening animation programmes. ❖ Workshop and seminar on” The role of women in environment protection.” If the development efforts of the women of Nepal ate to be realized their rights must be ensured. As such, it is promote that women take an active role in their government and the election process. Recognizing this, CWRD has implemented a political empowerment program to encourage the increased participation of woman in CWRD with the objective of increasing the consciousness of voting rights, and educating woman about the voting election process and procedures. Twenty seven women participated in the programme, helping to educate other woman about the election.
