...‘Curley’s Wife is stupid and dangerous. Discuss’ In the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck, the character of Curley’s Wife shows an array of different personal qualities, emotions, needs, and desires- all of which lead her to her inevitable demise. These include stupidity and danger, but also innocence and mentality. Steinbeck portrays her as an attractive, attention-seeking young woman who grew up too fast; she gave up on her dreams to become a neglected housewife who endures sexism on a daily basis. With no-one to confide in, she becomes a flirtatious weapon, a threat to the ranch’s labourers, resulting in a vicious circle that ends only when she dies. Is she futile and dangerous? Or deep and manipulating? Curley’s Wife is smart enough to use her physical appearance to her advantage, yet stupid enough to let men take advantage of her. She’s innocent enough to believe she could be a movie star, but fatal enough to exploit Lennie and delude others. She is frequently referred to as “jailbait” and a “rat-trap” by the other characters, proving that, despite her efforts to associate with them, they will never respect her and instead view her as no more than a sexual object. By showing how the other characters treat her, and how Curley’s Wife reacts to this abuse, you could argue that Steinbeck was very ahead of his time, and unusually aware of issues such as sexism that penetrated 20th Century America. Male characters, including Candy and George, have no moral value...

..."Why is Sex Fun? is the best book on the subject I've read. This lively exploration of our sexual heritage offers fascinating reading for anyone curious about why lovers do what they do." -Diane Ackerman, author of A Natural History of the Senses "I am so jealous of Jared Diamond, for he writes with such an elegant simplicity! Here, he takes a loot at the endlessly fascinating topic of human sexuality His convincing arguments should persuade xm that there are very special reasons why we evolved to use sex for recreation as well as for procreatim whereas most other mammals are denied that pleasure.... It is a great little book, by one of the worlds foremost biological philosophers." -ROGER Shohl Professor of Physiology Monash University Australia "Once again Jared Diamond provides us with answers to questions we may never have stopped to ask, but wish we had. In this long essay Diamond explains that recreational sex, while not unique to humans, is a rare behavior in the animal world. Above all, we learn, sexual activity divorced fron procreation is not only part of what it is to be human, but the very crux of our evolutionary success." -Bettyaxn Kevles. author of Naked to the Bonn Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Centnty The Science Masters Series is a global publishing vonture consisting of original science books written by leading scientists and published by a worldwide team of twenty-six publishers assembled by John Brockman. ...associated literature and culture. The linguist, though he may be interested in written texts and in the development of languages through time, tends to give priority to spoken languages and to the problems of analyzing them as they operate at a given point in time. The field of linguistics may be divided in terms of three dichotomies: synchronic versus diachronic, theoretical versus applied, microlinguistics versus macrolinguistics. A synchronic description of a language describes the language as it is at a given time; a diachronic description is concerned with the historical development of the language and the structural changes that have taken place in it. The goal of theoretical linguistics is the construction of a general theory of the structure of language or of a general theoretical framework for the description of languages; the aim of applied linguistics is the application of the findings and techniques of the scientific study of language to practical tasks, especially to the elaboration of improved methods of language teaching. The terms microlinguistics and macrolinguistics are not yet well established, and they are, in fact, used here purely for convenience. The former refers to a narrower and the latter to a much broader view of the scope of linguistics. According to the microlinguistic view, languages should be analyzed for their own sake and without reference to...

We welcome suggestions for future editions. 1) Write in a conversational style for rapid assimilation. 2) Include numerous figures serving as "visual memory tools" and summary charts at the end of each chapter. These can be used for "cram sessions" after the concepts have been studied in the text. 3) Concentrate more on clinical and infectious disease issues that are both interesting and vital to the actual practice of medicine.
