Identify characteristics of the natural hazard (What is it? Where did it occur? Provide some facts and figures).

Cyclone Ita was a tropical cyclone that developed southwest of the Solomon Islands in the north eastern Coral Sea on the 2nd of April, 2014 and died down on the 13th of April. Ita reached category 5 intensity, making it the strongest cyclone to impact Queensland since Cyclone Yasi 3 years prior. Ita had a maximum wind gust of 300 kph and a maximum sustained wind speed of 215 kph. On the 10th of April, it had intensified extremely rapidly, reaching a category 4 and then a category 5 in a span of only 6 hours. Weakening hours leading up to landfall, Ita had reached landfall at around 10pm on the 11th of April near Cape Flattery, rating as a category 4 cyclone. At the end of its journey on the 13th of April, it moved off the Queensland coast and maintained a category 1 intensity for another 24 hours, then transitioning to an extratropical low and accelerating further …show more content…
