The Civil Rights Movement was a long movement that attempted to address numerous obstacles. This movement could be described as something that was building for years. In the film, Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock, we get a closer look at the process of desegregating the education system in the United States. The film encompases the struggle many students of color had to endure in order to obtain a basic public education. In Little Rock the journey to enforce integration of the schooling system was prioritized by Daisy Bates. This paper will explore the setbacks and triumphs that Daisy Bates and the “Little Rock 9” faced, and how the film achieved the importance of this moment in history to the viewers.

During those three weeks, Daisy Bates fought in methods that many did not understand. She used the press to her advantage, she put herself out there in attempt to gain public support and ultimately it worked. The film uses clips of Daisy Bates to emphasize how she used the media to garner public support. In the weeks leading up to the resolution of the crisis, Daisy Bates saw her property damaged and feared for her life and the life of the the Little Rock nine. One speaker in the film described Daisy Bates determination as, “She was the one soldier willing to put her life on the battlefield for those children.” This quote was backed up with Daisy talking and standing next to armed men, demonstrating that she was out there on the battlefield fighting for these kids. The film shows that there was numerous attempts to dissuade Daisy Bates efforts to integrate the school but she resisted and kept moving in the direction of integration. The sound track in this moment of the film also intensified the meaning for the viewer.
