The Dale Grey story starts in Denver, Colorado. In 1983 Dale started Grey & Associates with two weeks’ vacation pay (but no associates). Today, the company has evolved into Communication Services and employs over 100 people in six offices and is one of the top 20 companies in telecommunications infrastructure development. For 17 years now, Grey has enjoyed being an entrepreneur. A turning point came when, as a young man, Grey’s boss asked him to slow down his work production because he was outshining the other employees. Grey soon recognized a personal desire and a passion that he didn’t see in other people, and he decided that he needed to build his own company. Almost two decades later, he’s still excited to work in an environment that’s fun, challenging and profitable. Grey’s initial goal was to build a million-dollar company. After successfully attaining this goal, he and his employees held an off-site planning retreat to determine the company’s future goals and direction. Grey and his team considered a number of factors, including what the company was doing right, necessary changes, and the future of the industry. The group articulated and recorded a company vision and decided they wanted to be a 10-million dollar company by the year 2005 (which they accomplished early). Like most entrepreneurs, Grey initially shouldered all the workload himself. However, his proudest accomplishment is being just another member of the team. As the name of the company evolved from ‘Grey & Associates’ to ‘Grey Communications’ and finally to ‘Communication Services’, clients relied less and less on Grey and more on the capable talents of company employees.
